Mosul, one of Iraq’s largest cities, was the place where so-called Islamic State declared its caliphate back in 2014. Now, after the Iraqi government has declared victory over IS -the group has also lost its last strongholds in Syria- the massive destruction over the campaign to liberate the city five months ago is in plain sight. Nafiseh Kohnavard from the BBC’s Persian Service has been covering the battle for Mosul and has been back to the city’s old town where life for ordinary civilians is anything but back to normal.

FRANCE 24's reporters went back to Mosul, almost three months after Iraqi forces liberated the country’s second city from the grip of the Islamic State (IS) group. The scene of the most violent urban warfare since World War II, Mosul suffered extensive damage. In the west of the city – among the ruins and landmines, and the group trauma of its inhabitants – life is gradually returning.
The bombings of the US-led coalition practically razed Mosul’s old city, now a no-go zone. Beneath the tons of rubble lie thousands of landmines and hundreds of bodies. The Al-Nuri Mosque, one of Mosul’s most famous monuments, was destroyed by the jihadists, who preferred to blow it up rather than concede victory to the Iraqi forces.
In the rest of West Mosul, one of the areas that suffered the most from the fighting, there is no water or electricity. The inhabitants do their best to get by from day to day. With the exception of a few shops, businesses are closed and there is no work to be had. The only option is to participate in the clean-up of the city, to carry rubble under a blazing sun for days at time for a few dinars. All of these people have a story to tell. Those who stayed in town lived for three long years under the jihadists' yoke.
Those three years are lost years, especially for the youngest. Schools remained open but no parents sent their children there, except those who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group. Ibrahim, a headmaster, saw his intake of pupils fall from 600 to just 12. The classes had become brainwashing sessions: the youngest children learned how to count ammunition and grenades, while the older ones studied geometry by calculating trajectories of mortar shells. Rebuilding the city is merely the beginning of the challenge ahead for Mosul.

To meet the residents of West Mosul, the only solution is to be escorted by the men of the federal police. Armed like soldiers and wearing helmets, they move only in groups, with armoured vehicles. In these conditions, it’s difficult to approach the thorny subject of sectarian tensions. But these tensions can be seen in the looks of the civilians and the attitude of the police.
Mosul is a predominantly Sunni city, which explains why the IS group was able to set up there so quickly in 2014. Back then, tensions between the Shiite central government – led at the time by Nuri al-Maliki – and the Sunni residents were at their peak.
Three years and a deadly war later, Mosul finds itself in the same situation: a Sunni city secured by mainly Shiite forces. The federal police display Iraqi flags on their armoured vehicles and do their best to appear neutral, but the mistrust is palpable and in some districts, the Shiite militias act as the real police.
Ultimately, some power-sharing arrangement will have to be found, otherwise violence could return to Mosul.

"Our lives were so suppressed", says beautician and single mother Jumana Najim Abdullah. "So many things were forbidden to us. They forbade us from doing many things that we loved", she says. In a country dominated by Shia, the majority Sunni city of Mosul sat at the centre of Iraq's explosive ethnic and religious divides. The divisions opened the door to IS in June 2014, when around 500,000 fled the city during the takeover. Under IS suppression every part of a female body, including the eyes, had to be covered. Nor were they allowed out without a male escort. As extremism reigned, music and art were forced underground.
"[Now] I feel a heavy burden has been lifted, that I can go out... and be free and comfortable", says Jumana, out to see a puppet show put on for the children of Mosul. "What happened to the city hurt the kids the most", says Khalid Waleed, speaking at a Mosul Youth group rehearsal. "We will revive whatever died in this city. We’ll revive it, God willing, through art, through painting... through all types of Arts", says Khalid.

In July 2017, so-called Islamic State's militants were forced out of the Iraqi city of Mosul after a nine-month battle which left at least 10,000 people dead. Six months on, bodies still lie in the streets of a city that is more a place of the dead than the living. The ITV News team travelled to Mosul to witness the devastation residents have been left to deal with.
Our correspondent Emma Murphy said: "Finding someone to tell their story proved almost impossible. In our days filming we came across more bodies than we did people. All this time on, the dead remain in the broken shells of homes where they were either executed by IS or killed in airstrikes."

In October 2016, an elite team of Iraqi Special Forces was tasked with leading the fight to defeat ISIS in Mosul. It was the beginning of a brutal battle of attrition that was to last almost nine months.
Filmed over the course of the whole campaign, MOSUL follows the experiences of four young soldiers: Anmar, a college graduate seeking revenge after his father was the victim of a suicide attack; Hussein, a ruthless sniper and aspiring soccer player; Jamal, a wise-cracking sergeant; and Amjad, a young recruit excited to be on the frontline.
Full of hope and good intentions at the beginning of the campaign, the soldiers are forced to confront the reality of fighting an elusive and vicious enemy in a city full of trapped civilians who are themselves fearful and suspicious of the army. And with victory in sight, tragedy strikes. When ISIS eventually capitulates, much of the city is destroyed, and the surviving soldiers are left haunted by what they have seen and done.

Richard Engel
Richard Engel (born September 16, 1973) is an American journalist and author who is NBC News' chief foreign correspondent. He was assigned to that position on April 18, 2008, after being the network's Middle East correspondent and Beirut Bureau chief. Engel was the first broadcast journalist recipient of the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for his report "War Zone Diary".
Prior to joining NBC News in May 2003, he covered the start of the 2003 war in Iraq from Baghdad for ABC News as a freelance journalist. He speaks and reads Arabic fluently and is also fluent in Italian and Spanish. Engel wrote the book A Fist in the Hornet's Nest, published in 2004, about his experience covering the Iraq War from Baghdad. His newest book, War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq, published in June 2008, picks up where his last book left off.
Engel is known for having covered the Iraq War, the Arab Spring and the Syrian civil war.
Early years
Engel grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. He has an older brother who is a cardiologist. His father, Peter, a former Goldman Sachs financier, and mother Nina, who ran an antiques store, feared for their son's future prospects because of his dyslexia. His mother is Swedish.

The divisions opened the door to IS in June 2014, when around 500,000 fled the city during the takeover. Under IS suppression every part of a female body, including the eyes, had to be covered. Nor were they allowed out without a male escort. As extremism reigned, music and art were forced underground. "[Now] I feel a heavy burden has been lifted, that I can go out... and be free and comfortable", says Jumana, out to see a puppet show put on for the children of Mosul. "What happened to the city hurt the kids the most", says Khalid Waleed, speaking at a Mosul Youth group rehearsal. "We will revive whatever died in this city. We’ll revive it, God willing, through art, through painting... through all types of Arts", says Khalid. FRANCE 24's reporters went back to Mosul, almost three months after Iraqi forces liberated the country’s second city from the grip of the Islamic State (IS) group. The scene of the most violent urban warfare since World War II, Mosul suffered extensive damage. In the west of the city – among the ruins and landmines, and the group trauma of its inhabitants – life is gradually returning.
The bombings of the US-led coalition practically razed Mosul’s old city, now a no-go zone. Beneath the tons of rubble lie thousands of landmines and hundreds of bodies. The Al-Nuri Mosque, one of Mosul’s most famous monuments, was destroyed by the jihadists, who preferred to blow it up rather than concede victory to the Iraqi forces.
In the rest of West Mosul, one of the areas that suffered the most from the fighting, there is no water or electricity. The inhabitants do their best to get by from day to day. With the exception of a few shops, businesses are closed and there is no work to be had. The only option is to participate in the clean-up of the city, to carry rubble under a blazing sun for days at time for a few dinars. All of these people have a story to tell. Those who stayed in town lived for three long years under the jihadists' yoke.
Those three years are lost years, especially for the youngest. Schools remained open but no parents sent their children there, except those who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group. Ibrahim, a headmaster, saw his intake of pupils fall from 600 to just 12. The classes had become brainwashing sessions: the youngest children learned how to count ammunition and grenades, while the older ones studied geometry by calculating trajectories of mortar shells. Rebuilding the city is merely the beginning of the challenge ahead for Mosul.

To meet the residents of West Mosul, the only solution is to be escorted by the men of the federal police. Armed like soldiers and wearing helmets, they move only in groups, with armoured vehicles. In these conditions, it’s difficult to approach the thorny subject of sectarian tensions. But these tensions can be seen in the looks of the civilians and the attitude of the police.
Mosul is a predominantly Sunni city, which explains why the IS group was able to set up there so quickly in 2014. Back then, tensions between the Shiite central government – led at the time by Nuri al-Maliki – and the Sunni residents were at their peak.
Three years and a deadly war later, Mosul finds itself in the same situation: a Sunni city secured by mainly Shiite forces. The federal police display Iraqi flags on their armoured vehicles and do their best to appear neutral, but the mistrust is palpable and in some districts, the Shiite militias act as the real police.
Ultimately, some power-sharing arrangement will have to be found, otherwise violence could return to Mosul.

"Our lives were so suppressed", says beautician and single mother Jumana Najim Abdullah. "So many things were forbidden to us. They forbade us from doing many things that we loved", she says. In a country dominated by Shia, the majority Sunni city of Mosul sat at the centre of Iraq's explosive ethnic and religious divides. The divisions opened the door to IS in June 2014, when around 500,000 fled the city during the takeover. Under IS suppression every part of a female body, including the eyes, had to be covered. Nor were they allowed out without a male escort. As extremism reigned, music and art were forced underground.
"[Now] I feel a heavy burden has been lifted, that I can go out... and be free and comfortable", says Jumana, out to see a puppet show put on for the children of Mosul. "What happened to the city hurt the kids the most", says Khalid Waleed, speaking at a Mosul Youth group rehearsal. "We will revive whatever died in this city. We’ll revive it, God willing, through art, through painting... through all types of Arts", says Khalid.

In October 2016, an elite team of Iraqi Special Forces was tasked with leading the fight to defeat ISIS in Mosul. It was the beginning of a brutal battle of attrition that was to last almost nine months.
Filmed over the course of the whole campaign, MOSUL follows the experiences of four young soldiers: Anmar, a college graduate seeking revenge after his father was the victim of a suicide attack; Hussein, a ruthless sniper and aspiring soccer player; Jamal, a wise-cracking sergeant; and Amjad, a young recruit excited to be on the frontline.
Full of hope and good intentions at the beginning of the campaign, the soldiers are forced to confront the reality of fighting an elusive and vicious enemy in a city full of trapped civilians who are themselves fearful and suspicious of the army. And with victory in sight, tragedy strikes. When ISIS eventually capitulates, much of the city is destroyed, and the surviving soldiers are left haunted by what they have seen and done.

The purpose of this trip was to journey into the deepest corners of Iraq where the oldest monotheistic religion in the world, the Yazidi people are currently exiled in large populations outside of from their homes and villages in refugee camps after fleeing for their lives from the enslavement, genocide and torture at the hands of ISIS extremist.
I hope you enjoy this series. My intention as a filmmaker has never been to exploit anyone for the purpose of entertainment but to inform and show the public the urgent need for recognition needed by these people from the Global Community. I believe this journey and series will however make you laugh, cry, and ideally see the beauty of a people who have lost everything and been through things unimaginable and yet they maintained their dignity are fighting for their lost brothers and sisters and seeking recognition by the United Nations for peace, protection and their homes back.

Two friends and I had travel plans change at the last minute and decided to book a trip to Iraqi Kurdistan. Shortly after our tickets were booked, the flight for Mosul began. Nonetheless, we decided to embark on our journey and discover a region full of history and beautiful people. Here are highlights from our trip. Full video to follow in the coming months.

1. Try Not to stand out
Rather than driving fast, surrounded by bodyguards try to blend in as much as possible. Women should dress in local fashion and men should grow out their facial hair.
2. Don't Step On Bread!
Bread is a highly treasured food in Iraq. If you happen across a fallen hunk in the street don't step on it or touch it with your feet!
3. Don't Visit the Borders.
Don't travel near the Syrian, Turkish, or Iranian borders. You may encounter large refugee flows.
4. Don't Bring Bad Luck.
When Iraqis buy a new appliance they will crack an egg over it to wash away any bad luck! Iraqis are very superstitious.
5. Don't Get Jumpy!
You often may see a group of Iraqis shouting and firing rifles. But it's just a traditional way of celebrating a wedding or event. Each tribe has a different song.
6. Don't Bring Bad Luck!
If an Iraqi buys a new car, he may sacrifice a rooster for good luck. If it's a new house he may sacrifice a lamb!
7. Don't Leave the Safe Zones.
Generally speaking, southern Iraq is safer than the Sunni Triangle, and a traveler must be particularly careful in Baghdad, where there are some highly dangerous neighborhoods.
8. DON'T BRING BAD LUCK!
Don't be surprised to find an old shoe hanging in a new house! Iraqis are VERY superstitious!
9. Don't Forget Shots!
The CDC recommends travelers get Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines as you can get these diseases through contaminated food or water in Iraq.
10. Don't Compliment Children!
Don't tell an Iraqi how well-behaved or handsome their child is. They believe this could jinx them with The Evil Eye.
11. Don't Eat Around!
In many places you may find yourself eating from a communal dish. In this case only take the portion that's directly in front of you.
12. Don't Eat with Your Left Hand!
According to the Prophet Muhammad, you should only use your right hand. The left hand is reserved for other things...

Iraq borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf. The capital city, Baghdad is in the center-east of the country. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run through the center of Iraq, flowing from northwest to southeast. These provide Iraq with agriculturally capable land and contrast with the steppe and desert landscape that covers most of Western Asia.
Iraq has been known by the Greek toponym 'Mesopotamia' (Land between the rivers) and has been home to continuous successive civilizations since the 6th millennium BC. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is often referred to as the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of writing. At different periods in its history, Iraq was the center of the indigenous Akkadian, Sumerian, Assyrian, and Babylonian empires. It was also part of the Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mongol, Safavid, Afsharid, and Ottoman empires, and under British control as a League of Nations mandate.[6][7]
Iraq's modern borders were mostly demarcated in 1920 by the League of Nations when the Ottoman Empire was divided by the Treaty of Sèvres. Iraq was placed under the authority of the United Kingdom as the British Mandate of Mesopotamia. A monarchy was established in 1921 and the Kingdom of Iraq gained independence from Britain in 1932. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and the Republic of Iraq was created. Iraq was controlled by the Ba'ath Party (Iraqi-led faction) from 1968 until 2003. After an invasion led by multinational forces, the Ba'ath Party was removed from power and multi-party parliamentary elections were held.
