Maximum Rocknroll is here to help you navigate the wild world of punk with MRR #418, the March 2018 issue!
First, we say goodbye to JJ Jacobson, the vocalist of legendary Texas hardcore punks OFFENDERS. But this issue is not complete made up of farewells! We check out Dublin’s Karate Klub DIY venue and get a brief rundown of the active scene there. We also speak to two British bands: MARTHA, who talks about Marxism and pop music, and SNOB, who may or may not be punk’s ABBA. There’s also interviews with three different punk deconstructionists. There’s ISS from North Carolina, who use a sampler and hip hop influences to create their own punk landscapes. And both MARAUDEUR from Switzerland and SENYAWA from Indonesia discuss the different ways of using improvisation to challenge our ideas of punk.
For the more traditionally minded punks out there we speak to F.I.T.S. from Canada about being Francophones, NOT ON TOUR from Israel about what it means to be an Israeli band, and NEO NEOS from Minneapolis about how they aren’t a “Jimmy Punk” band. Need more? We’ve got more: East Bay’s Dear Diary Zine Fest talks about changes in zine culture in recent years, while Feral Kid Records and More Power Tapes head honcho Eric Bifaro discusses some incredible stories about his life. Add that to all of the reviews and columns that you’ve come to expect, and you have a jam-packed issue!
You can also order this issue by mail by sending $4.99 in the US, $7 Canada, $9 Mexico, or $11 worldwide to: MRR, PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA
We are a contributor-driven publication, which means that we rely on punks like you to fill our pages. This is your magazine! You don’t need an invitation to be a part of what we do.
For review and radio play consideration, send two copies of vinyl or one copy of CD- or cassette-only releases to PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA. Send us the final version of your record—we do not review digital releases, test presses, or promo CDs. All tapes and CD-Rs are reviewed in the Demos section.
We will review everything that falls within our areas of coverage: independent punk, garage, and hardcore. This means no major labels or labels that are exclusively distributed by major-owned distributors. We reserve the right to reject releases on the basis of content. Music without vocals or drums will not be considered.
Every record that is reviewed is added to our archive, the largest collection of punk records in the world. Please allow two months from your mailing date before following up to ask if we’ve received your submission.
We are always looking for interview, scene report, guest column, and photo submissions. Submission does not guarantee publication. In order to improve the chances of your submission being printed, please read our FAQ.
In addition to records, we also review independently published and produced zines, books, and movies. Please send physical copies to PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA. If you have a streaming link to your film, or if it is playing in the San Francisco Bay Area, please email the information to carolyn@maximumrocknroll.com.
We rely on distributors to help us reach punks all over the world. Our distros come in all shapes and sizes, from the large companies that sell to newsstands and chain bookshops to a punk who sets up a box on a table at a show. As long as you know people who are interested in reading MRR you too can successfully distribute the magazine! If you have suggestions for places that we should contact about carrying the magazine, get in touch.
In the US you can order five or more of the same issue of MRR for only $2.49 each plus postage. If you are interested in carrying the magazine, write to us with the desired quantity, a shipping address, and your preferred form of payment. There is a small fee associated with Paypal payments.
Newsstand circulation is available through TNG. Other wholesalers who carry the magazine include Ebullition, Revolver, Small Changes, Media Solutions, and Kent News.
We have access to some of the cheapest international shipping rates offered by the USPS. We ship international packages to distributors once a month—individual issues start at $1.75 each. Shipping costs vary by country.
If you are interested in carrying the magazine, write to us with the desired quantity, a shipping address, and your Paypal email address. We send money requests for payment once a month, prior to shipping.
We encourage international distributors to set up subscription services in their city or country. Splitting the wholesale costs of magazines between a group of friends is much more affordable than ordering subscriptions directly from us.
Advertising with us is a great way to support Maximum Rocknroll and get your project seen by an audience of global punks. We only accept ads from bands, labels, distributors, and publishers that we would cover in our reviews sections. Other types of advertisers we take on a case-by-case basis. We reserve the right to refuse any ad and will refund your fee. New advertisers, please contact us first, before sending an ad or payment.
