Mr. Steiner was visiting Somalia as part of a high level UN and World Bank joint visit, and was joined by Mr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Senior Vice President, World Bank and Mr. Mark Lowcock, UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and head of the UNOCHA.
The Government, together with the Word Bank, EU and UN, has been finding out the impact of drought across the country through a Drought Impact and Needs Assessment. The information they have gathered has led to a long term plan to break the cycle of famine risk in Somalia. Read more about it here.
The conference aimed to create the space for dialogue on policy and best practice in fighting corruption.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) handed over new police uniforms to the Somali Police Force at a ceremony in Mogadishu. The new police uniforms will provide increased visibility to the Somali Police Force, distinguish police personnel from other law enforcement and security officials, and will also make it easier for community members to report crime.
The UN theme of this year’s campaign is, “Leave no one behind: End Violence against Women and Girls!” This means including and prioritizing the most marginalized.

The United Nations Development Programme extends its profound condolences and solidarity to all those affected, as we mourn the terrible loss of life and devastation caused by the attack on Saturday 14 October 2017 in Mogadishu, when more than 400 people were killed and over 300 were wounded.
