• New report highlights national conflict status in Nigeria Dec 5, 2017

  Key findings from this work point to a changed set of conflict actors and dynamics in Nigeria over recent years. Occurrences of political violence remains fairly constant although the driving forces of this violence have become more muddled. On the other hand, the research suggests a more complex security environment at the community level, with many communities having ready access to various forms of weaponry, challenging policing and law enforcement efforts.

  Farmers in Kimba community located in Biu Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State were the the latest to receive support that will enable them restart livelihood activities. Kimba, an originally agrarian community with an estimated population of 5,000 suffered from attacks by Boko Haram - causing widespread damage to houses, triggering mass displacement of people.

  UNDP Nigeria sent a 5-member delegation to the inaugural YouthConnekt Africa Summit. The Summit which was held in Kigali, Rwanda, was hosted by the country's President Paul Kagame and organized by the Government of Rwanda in collaboration with UNDP and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development UNCTAD.

  In Adamawa, more than 200 farmers received inputs in June. Most of the beneficiaries are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) mainly from Borno State while others are from host communities – majority of IDPs are living in host communities.

  Following the review of the Policy, INEC will better positioned to adopt effective internal and external communication processes and procedures that would strengthen public trust and confidence in its operation.   The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria welcomes its new Country Director, Samuel Bwalya, who begun his tour of duty on Monday 12 June, 2017. As Country Director, Samuel will be responsible for the day-to-day management of UNDP Country Office and assumes overall responsibility for the UNDP programme and operations to ensure coherence and strategic direction of activities. Before coming to Nigeria, Mr. Bwalya served as Country Director for UNDP in Ethiopia.  

• Edward visits Niger Delta, calls for urgent rural development intervention in Ogoniland Jun 10, 2017

  UNDP Resident Representative, Edward Kallon was on mission to the Niger Delta to get firsthand information from a variety of stakeholders on the issues the region faces. The Niger Delta occupies about 7.5% of Nigeria’s landmass and extends over about 70,000 km2 and home to over 20 million people. The region, endowed with oil, is also characterized by numerous development and environmental challenges.

  Makinta Kuriri primary school is gradually returning to normal, as students arrived for the morning assembly, sat at their new desks and excitedly awaited instructions from their teacher. Laughing and chatting, the students were ready to learn. This has not been the case for the past two years.
