2016-2017 Qualifications FAQ

Q: How do I know if I have earned a National Championship Qualification?

A: A list of players who have earned National Championship Qualifications will be posted publicly here – National Championship Qualifications

Q: How do I know if I have earned a World Championship Qualification?

A: A list of players who have earned World Championship Qualifications will be posted publicly here – World Championship Qualifications

Q: How long are Qualifications good for?

A: Qualifications are only usable during the event season in which they are earned. Event seasons will typically begin after the WizKids World Championships and conclude at the WizKids World Championships of the following year. For example, if you earn a National Championship Qualification at a WizKids Open event in November 2016, it may be used at any National Championship in 2016 or 2017 that takes place after the 2016 WizKids World Championships and before the 2017 WizKids World Championships.

Q: What happens if I place high enough at an event to earn a Qualification after I already have a Qualification of the same type from another event?

A: The newly earned Qualification passes down to the next highest ranked player that does not already have a Qualification of that type from a previous event.

Q: Can Qualifications be passed down willingly if I can’t make it to a National or World Championship or otherwise don’t want the Qualification?

A: No, Qualifications cannot be passed down willingly under any circumstances. The only situation under which a Qualification can pass down is if you have already earned a Qualification of that type from a previous event.

Q: Can National Championship Qualifications be earned in multiple countries?

A: Yes, you may earn at most one National Championships Qualification per game per country. This means if you earn a National Championship Qualification at a Canadian WizKids Open, you may also earn a National Championship Qualification at a U.S. WizKids Open.

Q: Some events allow X out of Y players (rounded up) to earn Qualifications. How are those players selected?

A: If 1 out of every 8 players at an event earn Qualifications and the event has 50 players, the top 7 players earn Qualifications. If the event consists of only Swiss rounds with no top cut, players who placed 1st-7th after the Swiss rounds earn Qualifications. If the event consists of Swiss rounds with a top 8 cut, such as the WizKids Open events, the players who win their top 8 matches (i.e. the top 4) earn Qualifications, as well as the 3 players who lost their top 8 matches that were ranked highest at the end of the Swiss rounds.

Example – At the end of the Swiss rounds the top 8 players are paired by placement in the following manner: 1st and 8th, 2nd and 7th, 3rd and 6th, 4th and 5th. The 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th place players win their matches, advance to the top 4, and earn Qualifications for doing so. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place players are now eliminated from the tournament, but the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place players earn Qualifications because, of those eliminated, they were the three highest ranked players after the Swiss rounds. The same logic can be applied to any number of players with any number of Qualifications.
