VMware Cloud on AWS

Bring the VMware SDDC to the AWS Cloud

VMware Cloud on AWS is an on-demand service that lets you run VMware vSphere-based applications on next generation AWS infrastructure. VMware Cloud on AWS is ideal for customers looking to migrate applications to the public cloud, develop entirely new applications, extend the capacity of their data centers for existing applications, consolidate on-premises data centers, or quickly provision development and test environments. VMware Cloud on AWS is delivered, sold, and supported by VMware as an on-demand, scalable cloud service with availability in the AWS US West (Oregon) and US East (N. Virginia) Regions.

VMware Cloud on AWS brings VMware’s Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) to the AWS Cloud, which lets you move, run, and protect production applications at scale across operationally consistent VMware vSphere®-based private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. You can easily move your vSphere-based applications to AWS with support for vSphere vMotion and the ability to stretch your layer 2 networks from on-premises to VMware Cloud on AWS. VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension provides the ability to perform rapid large-scale migrations of your applications while leveraging secure multi-site interconnect between you on-premises data center and VMware Cloud on AWS. Support for up to 10 SDDC clusters and multiple SDDC deployments helps you run production workloads at scale. VMware Site Recovery™ gives you proven disaster recovery as a service capability between your on-premises environment and VMware Cloud on AWS or two VMware Cloud on AWS environments across AWS availability zones.

With VMware Cloud on AWS, you use the same VMware tools including vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and vCenter on-premises or in the AWS Cloud without having to purchase any new or custom hardware, rewrite applications, or modify your operating model. The service automatically provisions infrastructure and provides full VM compatibility and workload portability between your on-premises environments and the AWS Cloud. With VMware Cloud on AWS, you can leverage AWS’s breadth of services, including compute, databases, analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), security, mobile, deployment, application services, and more.

Benefits

Leverage Existing VMware Investments

With VMware Cloud on AWS, you use the same VMware SDDC technology including vSphere, vSAN, NSX and vCenter, across your on-premises environment and the AWS Cloud. You can use the same tools and management capabilities you are using today. You can keep the same VMware provisioning, storage, and lifecycle policies you use today. This means you can easily move applications between their on-premises environments and AWS without having to purchase any new hardware, rewrite applications, or modify your operations.

Hybrid Cloud Without the Complexity

VMware Cloud on AWS lets you operate a consistent and seamless hybrid IT environment. There is no custom hardware to deploy in your on-premises environment, and no need to rewrite or modify applications to shift to a hybrid cloud model. You can use VMware’s management and policy tools across both on-premises and the VMware Cloud on AWS, so you have a unified and operationally consistent experience. These capabilities let you leverage all your existing investments to help save money and remove much of the complexity, risk and costs associated with moving to hybrid cloud.

Integrated with AWS Services

VMware virtual machines running on AWS have access to a broad set of AWS services including compute, database, analytics, IoT, AI, security, mobile, resource deployment, application services, and more. Latency-sensitive applications hosted in VMware can now directly access databases on Aurora, Dynamo or Redshift for petabyte-scale data analysis, as well as direct and secure access to low-cost S3 buckets, objects, and API functions.

Powered by the AWS Cloud

VMware Cloud on AWS brings VMware SDDC to the elastically scalable AWS Cloud. The service runs directly on the next-generation Nitro system AWS infrastructure and provisioned in a single-tenant, isolated VPC. This approach lets you take advantage of the scalability, elasticity, security and proven experience of the AWS Cloud.

Use cases

Extend Your Data Center to the Cloud

VMware Cloud on AWS lets you extend your on-premises data center with consistent on-demand capacity to meet the needs of your production applications. You can scale resources running in VMware Cloud on AWS up and down based on the needs of your production workloads. You can stretch a single network between your on-premises environment and VMware Cloud on AWS and enable multisite interconnects between various vSphere versions on-premises and VMware Cloud on AWS with VMware HCX technologies, an add-on service.

Move Production Applications

You can move production applications to VMware Cloud on AWS at scale without any complex conversions or re-architectures, easing migration of application workloads to the cloud. You can leverage bi-directional workload portability between your on-premises data center and the VMware Cloud on AWS while maintaining a set consistent set of policies. Applications running in VMware Cloud on AWS have access to the broad set of AWS services.

Disaster Recovery

VMware Cloud on AWS provides access to trusted and proven technology such as VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and vSphere Replication for disaster recovery and DR testing. The flexible architecture lets you deploy a disaster recovery strategy between on-premises to and VMware Cloud on AWS or between two VMware Cloud on AWS environments across availability zones with fast easy failover and failback capabilities. High levels of control let you deploy a DR strategy with VM-level granularity.

Application Development and Test

Deliver VMware SDDC-consistent test/dev environments with the ability to integrate with modern CI/CD automation tools. With VMware Cloud on AWS you can implement an operationally & architecturally consistent test environment, based on VMware SDDC platform, with vSphere at its core, delivering the ability to run the application either on-premises or in the cloud. VMware Cloud on AWS includes a set of REST-ful APIs, support for leading configuration management tools (such as Chef, Puppet, and Ansible), and access to the full set of AWS services for developers.

"VMware Cloud on AWS allows you take advantage of what you already know and own. Your existing skills, your investment in training, your operational practices, and your investment in software licenses remain relevant and applicable when you move to the public cloud. As part of that move you can forget about building & running data centers, modernizing hardware, and scaling to meet transient or short-term demand. You can also take advantage of a long list of AWS compute, database, analytics, IoT, AI, security, mobile, deployment and application services."
