Let's be honest, the whole cycle of this is revealing & depressing. One offhand remark is treated like a MAJOR INTERVENTION because it enables ti to become a) viral news fodder featuring endless pix of JLaw; b) an excuse for lots of men to shout at women for being "oversensitive'

And STILL we don't get to see Jeremy Irons in chaps. Honestly, some days I don't know why I bother.

Jennifer Lawrence, all on her own, does not get to define sexism. It's a collective project. Not the biggest issue facing the world, but part of the problem.
-
Well, quite. Also, "I would put myself through discomfort in a way which is not routinely asked of men". Well, OK, but that does have a trickle down effect.
-
The fact that what she is wearing is a major talking point for you and your politics is bizarre. And you manage justify your bizarre concern for another woman’s choice in outfit as feminist dialogue by... I’m sorry, how?

Fair enough, I s'pose. Made her look like a bit of a twit though. Why would anyone want to wear a dress like that during the day anyway? I'm with you.
-
Absolutely. She looked gorgeous but simultaneously completely absurd. Saying it was 'her choice' just confirms the sentiments behind the original tweet.
-
So, now we're telling women to cover up to fight sexism?
-
What I think the person means to say is, the culture of women having to look hot in any circumstance is so deep rooted in our culture that they have forgot to be comfortable in order to be in the limelight. You wouldn't demand a man to be shirtless in such cold, would you?
-
But of course, since Jennifer mentioned she was just out for 5 minutes, it may not have been THAT uncomfortable and she is old enough to understand what is good for her and what is bad. Feminism is about having a choice after all for me, regardless of what others think.

Jennifer Lawrence’s self-centered white “choice feminism” is really sad, though no big surprise. The idea that her well-compensated feelings on the matter are immaterial to the problem of the material conditions of women is beyond her.
-
I am not white, I am a beautiful pigmented woman and you are a really bad woman cause you are just like all other male members from my society who kept telling me my skirts are short or top to revealing.
-
You quietly clearly don’t understand what I or Helen are saying.
-
Well no one should understand what Helen is saying. She made a big deal about Jennifer Lawrence choosing to wear a dress. If telling women what to wear and attacking them is your form of activism, I want nothing to do with it.
-
Perhaps this might help. https://twitter.com/miri_iron/status/966401302606512130 …
-
Are you suggesting someone wearing a dress oppresses others?
-
No. But she is claiming it’s a feminist choice. Feminist choices are those which empower women & produce positive social change. JLawrence made a capitalist choice. There is a difference.
-
That's not at all what she said. Are you blind? She said it was her choice to wear what she wants and feminism should support that. You shaming women's clothing choices makes you sound like a far right extreme Christian, not a feminist.

So glad she said this because now I know she thinks this whole thing is as fucking stupid as I thought it was when it was first posted.
