Beethoven's musical style

Ludwig van Beethoven is generally viewed as one of the most influential figures in the history of classical music. Since his lifetime, when he was "universally accepted as the greatest living composer," Beethoven's music has remained among the most performed, discussed and reviewed. Scholarly journals are devoted to analysis of his life and work. He has been the subject of numerous biographies and monographs, and his music was the driving force behind the development of Schenkerian analysis. He is widely considered as among the most important composers, and along with Bach and Mozart, his music is the most frequently recorded.

Beethoven's stylistic innovations bridge the Classical and Romantic periods. The works of his early period brought the Classical form to its highest expressive level, expanding in formal, structural, and harmonic terms the musical idiom developed by predecessors such as Mozart and Haydn. The works of his middle and late periods were even more forward-looking, appropriately being categorized in and contributing to the musical language and thinking of the Romantic era, directly inspiring other Romantic composers such as Frédéric Chopin, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, and Johannes Brahms.

List of compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven

The musical works of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) are classified by both genre and various numbering systems.

The most common methods of numbering Beethoven's works are by opus number, assigned by Beethoven's publishers during his lifetime, and by number within genre. For example, the 14th string quartet, published as Opus 131, may be referenced either as "String Quartet No. 14" or "the Opus 131 String Quartet".

Many works that were unpublished or else published without opus numbers have been assigned either "WoO" (works without opus number) or "Anh" (appendix) numbers. For example, the short piano piece "Für Elise", is more fully known as the "Bagatelle in A minor, WoO 59 ('Für Elise')". Some works are also commonly referred to by their nicknames, such as the 'Kreutzer' Violin Sonata, or the Eroica Symphony.

The listings include all of these relevant identifiers. While other catalogues of Beethoven's works exist, the numbers here represent the most commonly used and widely known. Years in parentheses denote dates of composition or publication.

Death of Ludwig van Beethoven

The death of Ludwig van Beethoven on 26 March 1827 followed a prolonged illness. It was witnessed by his sister-in-law and by his close friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner, who provided a vivid description of the event. Beethoven's funeral was held three days later, and the procession was witnessed by a large crowd. He was buried in the cemetery at Währing, although his remains were moved in 1888 to Vienna's Zentralfriedhof.

Hüttenbrenner's account has been used to ascribe motivations of resistance and anger to Beethoven in his final moments. Beethoven's last words, and the exact cause of Beethoven's death have also been the subject of some disagreement.

Final illness

Beethoven suffered declining health throughout the last years of his life, including the so-called "Late period" when he produced some of his most admired work. The last work he was able to complete was the substitute final movement of the String Quartet No. 13, deemed necessary to replace the difficult Große Fuge. Shortly thereafter, in December 1826, illness struck again, with episodes of vomiting and diarrhea that nearly ended his life.

Ludwig van Beethoven (ⁱ/ˈlʊdvɪɡ væn ˈbeɪˌtoʊvən/, /ˈbeɪtˌhoʊvən/; German: [ˈluːtvɪç fan ˈbeːtˌhoˑfn̩]; baptised 17 December 1770 – 26 March 1827) was a German composer. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best-known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, his great Mass the Missa solemnis and an opera, Fidelio.

Born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire, Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and by composer and conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe. At the age of 21 he moved to Vienna, where he began studying composition with Joseph Haydn, and gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. He lived in Vienna until his death. By his late 20s his hearing began to deteriorate, and by the last decade of his life he was almost totally deaf. In 1811 he gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose; many of his most admired works come from these last 15 years of his life.

Adagio sostenuto The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation", mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or "moderately loud". The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Carl Czerny, "Surely I've written better things. Allegretto The second movement is a relatively conventional scherzo and trio, a moment of relative calm written in D-flat major, the enharmonic equivalent of C♯ major, the more easily-notated parallel major of C♯ minor. Franz Liszt described the second movement as "a flower between two chasms."[citation needed] The slight majority of the movement is in piano, but a handful of sforzandos and forte-pianos helps to maintain the movement's cheerful disposition. Presto agitato The stormy final movement (C♯ minor), in sonata form, is the weightiest of the three, reflecting an experiment of Beethoven's (also carried out in the companion sonata, Opus 27, No. 1 and later on in Opus 101) placement of the most important movement of the sonata last. The writing has many fast arpeggios and strongly accented notes, and an effective performance demands lively and skillful playing. It is thought that the C-sharp minor sonata, particularly the third movement, was the inspiration for Frédéric Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu, which manifests the key relationships of the sonata's three movements. Of the final movement, Charles Rosen has written "it is the most unbridled in its representation of emotion. Even today, two hundred years later, its ferocity is astonishing. Beethoven's heavy use of sforzando notes, together with just a few strategically located fortissimo passages, creates the sense of a very powerful sound in spite of the predominance of piano markings throughout. Within this turbulent sonata-allegro, there are two main themes, with a variety of variation techniques utilized. Beethoven's pedal mark See also: Piano history and musical performance, Mute (music), and Piano pedals#Beethoven and pedals At the opening of the work, Beethoven included a written direction that the sustain pedal should be depressed for the entire duration of the first movement. The Italian reads: "Si deve suonare tutto questo pezzo delicatissimamente e senza sordino". ("One must play this whole piece [meaning "movement"] very delicately and without dampers.") The modern piano has a much longer sustain time than the instruments of Beethoven's day, leaving for a rather blurry and dissonant tone. One option for dealing with this problem is to perform the work on a restored or replicated piano of the kind Beethoven knew. Proponents of historically informed performance using such pianos have found it feasible to perform the work respecting Beethoven's original direction.

Daniel Barenboim, artistic personality and former wunderkind, long an essential part of the international musical scene both on the conductor’s podium and at the piano, is the perfect match for this demanding music. Conducting and playing at the same time, Barenboim chose his orchestra of almost two decades, the Staatskapelle Berlin, which he has praised warmly for its exceptional, dark and warm sound. With a tradition reaching back to 1570, the Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the oldest orchestras in the world. Barenboim plays Beethoven brings together two musical masterminds. New compositional worlds We tend to forget that when Ludwig van Beethoven left his home town of Bonn at the end of 1792 and, still only twenty-two years old, travelled to Vienna to receive the "spirit of Mozart from Haydn's hands", it was above all as a pianist that he created a sensation. (lt is worth adding parenthetically that this was in fact Beethoven's second visit to Vienna, but on this occasion he settled in the city for good.) He was a keyboard virtuoso of almost awesome abilities, taking part in contests with rival pianists which, hugely popular with the general public, were applauded frenetically and invariably ended with Beethoven wiping the floor with his worsted opponents. Not only did this create a furore, it also caused alarm: "This is no human being, but the devil himself," exclaimed the Abbé Gelinek, who as a composer and pianist was acclaimed for his improvisations but who bad just been defeated by Beethoven in one such contest. Vienna had never known anything like it. "The very devil is in this young man," Gelinek went on; such playing was unprecedented. "He can overcome difticulties and produce effects on the piano that we could never have imagined in our wildest dreams." In short, wo may imagine the young Beethoven as the pianist of our dreams. Audiences lay at his feet. Particularly famous is an account by Carl Czerny, one of Beethoven's piano pupils, who describes bis mentor's gifts as an improviser: "In whatever company he might chance to be, he knew how to achieve such an effect upon every listener that frequently not an eye remained dry, while many would break out into loud sobs, for there was something wonderful in his expression in addition to the beauty and originality of his ideas." Beethoven was a romantic seducer who used the black and white keys of the piano as the means by which to ensorcell his listeners. But he was also an infernal charlatan. "After ending an improvisation of this kind," Czerny went on, "he would burst into loud laughter and banter bis hearers on the emotion he had caused in them." lt is no wonder, therefore, that the piano was central to Beethoven's overall output. Like Mozart before him, he wrote much for bis own use and, hence, for his triumphant public appearances, which brought him not only success and fame but also money and the goodwill of his patrons. In total, Beethoven wrote five concertos for piano and orchestra, although some writers would argue that he wrote seven, including an early work in E flat major from bis years in Bonn, Wo04, of which only the solo part has survived, and an arrangement of his famous Violin Concerto, Op. 61, which he reworked as a piano concerto, Op. 61a. The five main piano concertos were written between 1788 and 1809 and therefore cover a period of some two decades. This period witnessed a tremendous development in Beethoven's style, a shift that can be traced step by step in the individual concertos. Each has its own style, its characteristic sound world and its own architecture. It is as if Beethoven opened up a new compositional world each new concerto.

Rondo. Allegro (12:04) The world of music initially reacted less enthusiastically to Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto in E-flat Major, Op. 73. "The excessive length of the composition", wrote one reviewer, following the work's first public performance at a Gewandhaus concert in Leipzig on 28 November 1811, "reduced the overall effect that this glorious product of the composer's mind would undoubtedly otherwise have produced." On the one hand, the critic was not entirely wrong, for the Fifth Piano Concerto is Beethoven's longest piano concerto, and in its heroic "Eroica" key of E fiat major is certainly a "glorious product of the composer's mind". But with the best will in the world it is impossible to claim that it falls to produce an "overall effect". Quite the opposite, in fact. The Fifth is the most effective of Beethoven's five piano concertos and one of the most popular of all contributions to the medium. Outside the German-speaking world the work's special status is acknowledged by descriptions of it as the "Emperor", "L'Empéreur" and "Imperatore". This alternative name was not Beethoven's but probably derives from his friend and publisher Johann Baptist Cramer. In spite of its inauthenticity, it goes straight to the heart of the matter, for no piano concerto begins on a more majestic or a more resplendent note. Three times the full orchestra intones a radiant chord and three times the solo piano responds with a bravura cadenza before the orchestra introduces the main theme. At the climax of the development section, orchestra and solo instrument engage in a veritable battle fought out over harshly dotted rhythms from which they emerge as equals. And even in the soloist's cadenza, the orchestra refuses to fall completely silent but engages in a subtle dialogue with the piano. In none of his other piano concertos was Beethoven as successful in forging a novel synthesis between concertante writing and the gestural language of the symphony.

Elisabeth Roeckel, known to her friends as Elise, was the younger sister of Joseph Roeckel, a singer who performed in Beethoven’s opera Fidelio. She wrote letters documenting her flirtatious relationship with the composer when she was younger, and remained close to him until his death in 1827. If that’s the case, why would it be named “Für Elise” instead of “Für Therese”? The argument is that it was "Für Therese"—and somewhere over the years, the name was mistranslated. Another fact working in Malfatti’s favor: The original manuscript in Beethoven’s hand was found in her possessions after her death, apparently labeled “Für Therese.” It has since gone missing, resulting in a classical music mystery for the ages. Elise—whoever she is—isn’t the only mystery woman in Beethoven’s life. The subject of his “Immortal Beloved” letters has also been much debated over the years.
