Nizam of Hyderabad

The Nizam-ul-Mulk of Hyderabad, popularly known as the Nizam of Hyderabad, was a monarch of the Hyderabad State, now divided into Telangana state, Hyderabad-Karnataka region of Karnataka and Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Nizam, shortened from Nizam-ul-Mulk, meaning Administrator of the Realm, was the title of the sovereigns of Hyderabad State was the premier Prince of India, since 1724, belonging to the Asaf Jah dynasty.

The Asaf Jah Dynasty was founded by Mir Qamar-ud-Din Siddiqi, a viceroy of the Deccan under the Mughal Empire from 1713 to 1721. He intermittently ruled after Aurangzeb's death in 1707. In 1724, Mughal control lapsed, and Asaf Jah declared himself independent in Hyderabad.

Following the decline of the Mughal power, India saw the rise of Maratha Empire. The Nizam himself saw many invasions by the Marathas, which resulted in the Nizam paying a regular tax (Chauth) to the Marathas. The major battles fought between the Marathas and the Nizam include Palkhed, Udgir, Rakshasbhuvan, and Kharda, in all of which the Nizam lost.

Hyderabad (ⁱ/ˈhaɪdərəˌbæd/ HY-dər-ə-bad; often /ˈhaɪdrəˌbæd/) is the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh. Occupying 650 square kilometres (250 sq mi) along the banks of the Musi River, it has a population of about 6.7 million and a metropolitan population of about 7.75 million, making it the fourth most populous city and sixth most populous urban agglomeration in India. At an average altitude of 542 metres (1,778 ft), much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain around artificial lakes, including Hussain Sagar—predating the city's founding—north of the city centre.

Established in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, Hyderabad remained under the rule of the Qutb Shahi dynasty for nearly a century before the Mughals captured the region. In 1724, Mughal viceroy Asif Jah I declared his sovereignty and created his own dynasty, known as the Nizams of Hyderabad. The Nizam's dominions became a princely state during the British Raj, and remained so for 150 years, with the city serving as its capital. The city continued as the capital of Hyderabad State after it was brought into the Indian Union in 1948, and became the capital of Andhra Pradesh after the States Reorganisation Act, 1956. Since 1956, Rashtrapati Nilayam in the city has been the winter office of the President of India. In 2014, the newly formed state of Telangana split from Andhra Pradesh and the city became joint capital of the two states, a transitional arrangement scheduled to end by 2025.

Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII

His Exalted Highness Nizam Sir Mir Osman Ali Khan Siddiqi Asaf Jah VII GCSI GBE (Urdu: آصف جاہ‎), born Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur (Urdu: عثمان علی خان صدیقی بہادر‎; 6 April 1886 – 24 February 1967), was the last Nizam (or ruler) of the Princely State of Hyderabad and of Berar. He ruled Hyderabad between 1911 and 1948, until it was annexed by India. He was styled His Exalted Highness The Nizam of Hyderabad. Later he was made the Rajpramukh of Hyderabad State on 26 January 1950 and continued until 31 October 1956, after which the state was partitioned on linguistic basis and became part of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

During his days as Nizam, he was reputed to be the richest man in the world, having a fortune estimated at US$2 billion in the early 1940s ($33.8 billion today) or 2 per cent of the US economy then. At that time the treasury of the newly independent Union government of India reported annual revenue of US$1 billion only. He was portrayed on the cover of TIME magazine on 22 February 1937, described as the world's richest man. The Nizam is widely believed to have remained as the richest man in South Asia until his death in 1967, though his fortunes fell to US$1 billion by then and became a subject of multiple legal disputes between bitterly fighting rival descendants.

Inspired by the success of The Rest Of The Story, hosted by Paul Harvey, Joe Crews' original objective for Amazing Facts was to reach out to both Christian and non-Christian listeners via daily 15-minute programs by opening with a scientific or historic fact, and how it applies to the overall Biblical messages. Later, the program offered accompanying home Bible study courses, as well as books written by Crews himself. In 1987, Amazing Facts initiated a television ministry that has expanded to four programs as well as periodic evangelism series.

Shortly before his death in 1994, Crews invited Doug Batchelor to assume the position of president/speaker, which he holds to this day. Today, the Amazing Facts radio program "Bible Answers Live" broadcasts mainly out of Sacramento, California each Sunday evening to about 155 national stations.

Barkat Ali Khan Mukarram Jah Asaf Jah VIII, Beyefendi (born 6 October 1933), less formally known as Mukarram Jah, became the titular Nizam of Hyderabad on the death of his grandfather in 1967. Background Mukarram Jah was born to Azam Jah and Durru Shehvar and the grandson of Osman Ali Khan, the last reigning Nizam of Hyderabad state, and also the grandson of the last Ottoman Caliph, 'Abdu'l-Mijid II.[2] Jah was educated at The Doon School and then in England at Harrow School, Cambridge University (Peterhouse), the London School of Economics and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.[3][4] Mukarram Jah had a close relationship with India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who reportedly wanted him to become his personal envoy or an ambassador to a Muslim country.[5] His two main palaces in Hyderabad—Chowmahalla and Falaknuma—were restored and opened to the public, the former as a museum highlighting the Nizam era and the latter as a luxury hotel opened in February 2010 after renovating and restoring for about ten years (under lease to the Taj Group).[6] Like his father, Mukarram was the richest man in India till the 1980s. However in the 1990s most of his ancestral assets were lost to rival claimants in legal disputes. His net worth is estimated $1 billion.

HISTORIC MUTINY SITES. Made in 1914, this film is primarily concerned with sites in Delhi that relate to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. At the time of the Rebellion, British control of India lay in the hands of the British East India Company. The rebellion began on 10 May 1857, when Indian sepoys, ordinary soldiers serving in the Bengal division of the British East India Company’s Army, mutinied at a small military station in Meerut. It was only contained with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. In the same year power in India was transferred to the British Crown. The sepoys had various grievances: new demands that they serve in far-flung territories; the introduction of gun cartridges that were greased with beef and pork fat and were therefore contaminating to both Hindus and Muslims; and problems relating to a loss of privileges and increased taxation in the recently annexed area of Oudh, home to over one third of the soldiers (Brown, 1994, 87-89). Vastly outnumbering British personnel, they quickly assumed control in parts of the upper Gangetic plain and central India (Hibbert, 1980, 19). They seized Delhi following the destruction of the station at Meerut. In the process many European residents were massacred, and the sepoys installed Bhadur Shar, the last Moghul, as their leader. Unfortunately, there is no documentation about the makers of this travelogue (Dixon). Their concern, however, is with sites in Delhi that relate to British heroism. They film the Kashmiri Gate, where several British military personnel died as they blew up their magazine rather than letting it fall into sepoys’ hands. They show the area where General John Nicholson fell and the statue erected in his memory. Nicholson, the most dynamic officer in the recapture of Delhi, was also among the most ruthless in his treatment of mutineers, his dictum being ‘the punishment of mutiny is death’ (Hibbert, 1989, 293). Also featured are St James Church and the ball and cross in its grounds, which the sepoys used for target practice (‘1857 Mutiny Tour’). This church also houses John Nicholson’s grave. Finally, the film shows the Mutiny Monument, erected in 1863 to honour British victims of the uprising (‘Mutiny Monument, Delhi’). Bryony Dixon argues that the tradition of depicting the mutiny sites ‘began with the event itself’, citing the documentary photographs of Felix Beato, which captured the aftermath of the rebellion (Dixon). According to Patrick Brantlinger, ‘No episode in British imperial history raised public excitement to a higher pitch than the Indian Mutiny of 1857’ (Brantlinger, 1988, 199). He agues that ‘Most British writing about the Mutiny before 1914 is part of an imperialist heritage of division and mutual hate’ (Bratlinger, 1988, 222). John Nicholson, in particular, emerged as a martyred hero for the British, being referenced in numerous literary works, including Rudyard Kipling’s Kim (1901). The mutiny took on increasing symbolic importance for Indians. In 1909 Vinayak Damodar Savarkar published his significantly titled The Indian War of Independence 1857, which argued that the rebellion was in fact a nationalist revolution. His work reflected advances in Indian politics: the Indian National Congress was formed in 1885, and the Muslim League in 1906. The Great War (1914-18) ushered in the first stages of constitutional reform, with the Montagu Declaration of 1917 promising Dominion status for India. Following the achievement of Indian independence in 1947, several of the sites featured in this film were reconfigured. John Nicholson’s statue was removed and resituated at his old school in Dungannon, Ireland. Meanwhile, the Mutiny Monument was re-dedicated to the martyrs of India’s freedom struggles (‘Mutiny Monument, Delhi’).

History of Hyderabad 1948: India's hidden massacre Hyderabad's Muslim Nizam, or prince, insisted on remaining independent. This refusal to surrender sovereignty to the new democratic India outraged the country's leaders in New Delhi. After an acrimonious stand-off between Delhi and Hyderabad, the government finally lost patience. Historians say their desire to prevent an independent Muslim-led state taking root in the heart of predominantly Hindu India was another worry. the Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, In September 1948 the Indian Army invaded Hyderabad. In what was rather misleadingly known as a "police action", the Nizam's forces were defeated after just a few days without any significant loss of civilian lives. But word then reached Delhi that arson, looting and the mass murder and rape of Muslims had followed the invasion. Determined to get to the bottom of what was happening, an alarmed Nehru commissioned a small mixed-faith team to go to Hyderabad to investigate. It was led by a Hindu congressman, Pandit Sunderlal. But the resulting report that bore his name was never published. Historian Sunil Purushotham from the University of Cambridge has now obtained a copy of the report as part of his research in this field. Pandit Sunderlal's team concluded that between 27,000 and 40,000 died The Sunderlal team visited dozens of villages throughout the state. At each one they carefully chronicled the accounts of Muslims who had survived the appalling violence: "We had absolutely unimpeachable evidence to the effect that there were instances in which men belonging to the Indian Army and also to the local police took part in looting and even other crimes. "During our tour we gathered, at not a few places, that soldiers encouraged, persuaded and in a few cases even compelled the Hindu mob to loot Muslim shops and houses." The team reported that while Muslim villagers were disarmed by the Indian Army, Hindus were often left with their weapons. The mob violence that ensued was often led by Hindu paramilitary groups. In other cases, it said, Indian soldiers themselves took an active hand in the butchery: "At a number of places members of the armed forces brought out Muslim adult males from villages and towns and massacred them in cold blood." In confidential notes attached to the Sunderlal report, its authors detailed the gruesome nature of the Hindu revenge: "In many places we were shown wells still full of corpses that were rotting. In one such we counted 11 bodies, which included that of a woman with a small child sticking to her breast. " And it went on: "We saw remnants of corpses lying in ditches. At several places the bodies had been burnt and we would see the charred bones and skulls still lying there." The Sunderlal report estimated that between 27,000 to 40,000 people lost their lives.
