Brass

Brass is a metal alloy made of copper and zinc; the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses with varying properties. It is a substitutional alloy: atoms of the two constituents may replace each other within the same crystal structure.

By comparison, bronze is principally an alloy of copper and tin. However, bronze and brass may also include small proportions of a range of other elements including arsenic, phosphorus, aluminium, manganese, and silicon. The term is also applied to a variety of brasses, and the distinction is largely historical. Modern practice in museums and archaeology increasingly avoids both terms for historical objects in favour of the all-embracing "copper alloy".

Brass is used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance; for applications where low friction is required such as locks, gears, bearings, doorknobs, ammunition casings and valves; for plumbing and electrical applications; and extensively in brass musical instruments such as horns and bells where a combination of high workability (historically with hand tools) and durability is desired. It is also used in zippers. Brass is often used in situations in which it is important that sparks not be struck, such as in fittings and tools around explosive gases.

Brass band

A brass band is a musical ensemble generally consisting entirely of brass instruments, most often with a percussion section. Ensembles that include brass and woodwind instruments can in certain traditions also be termed brass bands (particularly in the context of New Orleans–style brass bands), but may more correctly termed military bands, concert bands, or "brass and reed" bands.

Styles

Balkan

Balkan-style Brass Bands (Serbian: Труба, trumpet) play a distinctive style of music originating in 19th-century Balkans when Roma trumpeters influenced by Turkish marching bands transposed Folk music into brass. It is popular throughout the Balkans, especially Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Romania and Bulgaria. The beats are usually fast and accompanied by kolo. The performers each have their instrument of the orchestra and are called trubači (трубачи). The best known examples of acclaimed music in this style are from Goran Bregović and Boban Marković Orkestar. The Serbian film maker Emir Kusturica has, through his films (Black Cat, White Cat), made the style popular in the international community outside the Balkans.

Canadian Brass

Canadian Brass is a Canadian brass quintet formed in 1970 in Toronto, Ontario by tubist Charles Daellenbach and trombonist Gene Watts. The group performs internationally and has recorded more than 130 CDs and DVDs. They have commissioned, performed, and recorded hundreds of transcriptions and original works for brass quintet. Canadian Brass has a library of more than 600 compositions and arrangements specially and uniquely fashioned for them.

As of 2016, the quintet is composed of trumpeters Caleb Hudson and Chris Coletti, hornist Bernhard Scully, trombonist Achilles Liarmakopoulos and Charles Daellenbach.

Description and history

The "Kings of Brass," as described by the Ottawa Citizen, had their first European tour in 1972 with the Festival Singers. The Canadian Brass (known for their unique performance attire of formal black suits with white running shoes) made its American debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in 1975. A significant international visit was made in 1977 when they were sent to mainland China as a cultural exchange between Canada and China. The ensemble was chosen and sent on this cultural mission by then-Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. They are now remembered in China as the first Western musicians allowed into China after the Cultural Revolution had suppressed Western art and music.

Mnozil Brass

Mnozil Brass is an Austrian brass septet. They play classical, jazz and other styles of music using traditional brass instruments and more unusual instruments such as the customized rotary valved trumpet and bass trumpet. Music is presented with a typical Austrian style of humour, which can be approximately characterized as "jet black" and "here and there" absurd. Elements of slapstick exist next to virtuosic brass playing. They have also been dubbed "The Monty Python of the musical world". Austrian and German schlager songs of the 20th century are often caricatured.

History

All founding members were graduates of the renowned Vienna College of Music, who met while playing at the Mnozil pub in Vienna's first inner city district. The band was founded in 1992 although the first official outing was in 1993.

Former member Sebastian Fuchsberger was a great talent in imitating, for example, Johannes Heesters and Udo Jürgens. Mnozil Brass is able to convince the audience that playing music is not just serious business.

Flight of the Bumblebee

"Flight of the Bumblebee" is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). Although in the opera the Swan-Bird sings during the first part of the "Flight", her vocal line is melodically uninvolved and easily omitted; this feature, combined with the fact that the number decisively closes the scene, made easy extraction as an orchestral concerto piece possible.

Although the "Flight" does not have a title in the score of the opera, its common English title translates like the Russian one (Полёт шмеля = Polyot shmelya). Incidentally, this piece does NOT constitute one of the movements of the orchestral suite that Rimsky-Korsakov derived from the opera for concerts.

The holes for the bearings were drilled a tiny bit smaller then the bearings themselfs, so in order to make them fit i had to put them in liquid nitrogen to shrink them. Label Channel: http://youtube.com/tasty" Project Inspired By: An indirect suggestion my dad made for me to try and make something practical out of brass. He didn't expect I'd end up making these! Project History & More Info: The weather has cooled off quite a bit, which has turned my interest back to keeping warm by casting metal. This time round I wanted to play with higher temperature metals, like brass. So I made a trip to a local shooting range, and salvaged a whole bucket-load of spent brass casings. Quite a few people have asked whether my backyard foundry can melt brass, and I was curious myself, so I threw a few handfuls of casings into a crucible and fired them up. I tried using lump charcoal because it burns hotter and faster than briquettes, and a clay crucible purchased from the internet because it withstands heat better, and lasts longer than steel. I was impressed that the brass melted down without hesitation, and I was able to easily cast mini brass muffins the same day. A couple things worth mentioning are that the melting point of brass is around the boiling point of zinc. I noticed this in real-life when the metal started bubbling, and shooting out white flames. I wasn't sure what it was until I looked it up, but it was most likely zinc oxide fumes being released. Zinc Oxide can be toxic in large quantities, and although it's never happened to me, claims are that it can cause metal fume fever, which gives flu like symptoms. You should also know that brass is over 3 times heavier than aluminum, so expect the crucible to have a lot more weight to it, making it harder to handle. My dad was visiting at the time and confirmed my thoughts about it by suggesting I try making something more practical and useful. So I thought it would be fun to make some "Brass Knuckle" paperweights. I looked online at different varieties of brass knuckles, then drew my own version in photoshop, and used the "Styro-Slicer" and the lost-foam casting technique to make a rough pair of knuckles. I cast another pair the same way, and spent another 8 hours sanding and buffing them up to a mirror finish, then wondered how I could take them to the next level. Spikes seemed like a cool idea, inspired by a picture I saw on a google image search, so I stopped at an alternative clothing store and picked up a spiked choker collar, and repurposed the spikes for my piece of metal art. These are not designed or intended to be used as weapons. Possession of Brass Knuckles is illegal in most countries, (but not where I live), however I created these simply for artistic expression, and use them mainly as workshop décor. (paperweights).

Plot: In a film advertised and sold as a Damon Runyon story, but actually combined elements from his "All Scarlet" and another story written by J. Robert Bren and Norman Houston called "Odds Are Even", horse breeder Tom Martin, in a streak of bad luck, is persuaded by his daughter Doris to enter a mare in the feature race at the county fair. There, Martin rejects a tout's proposition to throw the race, and he also meets his old friends, the "Judge" and the "Warbler". The race starts and the mare, just short of reaching the wire and winning the race, is crowded into the rail and ruined as a racer. The Martins return home, where Ruth busies herself in training a colt, Katydid. She enters the horse in a claiming race at Santa Anita, where she gets lots of publicity as a novelty girl trainer.Wealthy, amateur horseman Steve Wendall offers her a job as trainer of his stable, but she refuses. Katydid wins but is claimed by Bradford, Wendall's trainer, on behalf of Wendall, who has done so simply to get Ruth to accept his job offer. She does, and goes East and then to Europe, winning time and again with the Wendall horses she has trained. But there is a falling out between Ruth and Wendall, who doesn't think Katydid can win the Santa Anita, and Ruth who thinks Wendall has had the horse kidnapped to keep it out of the race.
