(Nigeria News) Villagers forced to use boats, homes completely submerged underwater and animals seeking refuge from the encroaching waters are the scenes in Lokoja, a town in Kogi state on the frontline of the flood in Nigeria
UPDATED: 820, 282 people have been displaced across Adamawa, Benue, Taraba, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Anambra & Kogi states (latest figures released from Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency)
"The flood has taken over more than one-third of the town," says Emmanuel Idoko, a local businessman. "Some people are cut off from the town entirely."
Some of the heaviest rains for years, as well as the release of excess water from Cameroon's Lagdo dam have left hundreds of thousands displaced and unknown numbers of people dead across the country.
"This is the largest, highest flood I have experienced in my life," says one local villager as he looks out across the water. "The water now is 12.54 metres above water level."
Local communities are leaving for higher ground and local businesses are reporting a 80% drop in custom. The water supply to the town has been shut-off and electricity supply is, at best, only a few hours a day in areas not affected by the flood but people are relying on their generators.
NEMA has set up 87 IDP camps for Kogi state alone where they say at least 623,690 people in 344 communities have been displaced. In our photos and video the Ibaji Local Government Area is almost completely submerged.
"It is now necessary to call on people living in Ibaji to either move to Idah Local Government Council of the state or to closer communities in Anambra State" warned Muhammad Sani-Sidi, the Director General of NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency)

In a statement by NEMA, Governor Wada of Kogi state is reported to have flown across the flooded area and stated:
"The situation is not only devastating but alarming by the magnitude of damages to the communities as we had just seen from the air."
But many local communities in Kogi state complain that very little has been done by the government to help protect their livelihoods that are now in danger of being swept away by the floods.
The flood in Nigeria is now spreading to Southern-Eastern states of Amanbra and Imo. NEMA warns the floods will likely continue:
"Prolonged flooding as more water would still be released from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon and Kainji Dam with the intensifying rain."
Emmanuel Idoko says he is not optimistic the problem will get any better soon: "We're expecting the flood to be worse than what we are seeing now - it's rising everyday."

The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, was reportedly pelted with stones and other missiles on Friday at the Lokoja Central Mosque where he was attending a special session to mark the 25th anniversary of the creation of the state.
A source close to the mosque told our correspondent in Lokoja that the governor, who had arrived the mosque behind schedule, was greeted with jeers and boos by some irate youths, at the entrance of the mosque.
“The governor was booed and missiles were thrown in his direction as he alighted from his car,” the source said.
Following the incident, our sources said the prayer session was hurriedly suspended on the advice of security personnel around.
When contacted for confirmation, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and strategy, Abdumalik Abdukarim, said the report was not true.
“I was at the mosque with the governor and I did not witness any incident like that,” he said.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, proved abortive as he did not answer calls made to his mobile telephone.

The Federal University Lokoja was established along with other eight (8) new Federal universities on the 16th February, 2011 following a pronouncement by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Soon afterwards, a Vice Chancellor and Registrar in the persons of Professor Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi and Mrs. Habiba Anavoza Adeiza were appointed. The University is sited at Lokoja, the Capital city of Kogi State of Nigeria, in the North Central political zone.

Lokoja
Lokoja is a city in Nigeria. It lies at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers and is the capital of Nigeria's Kogi State.
History
Although the area has been inhabited for thousands of years, the present settlement at Lokoja was established in 1857 by the British explorer William Baikie at the site of an earlier model farm constructed during the failed Niger expedition of 1841. Lokoja was the capital of the British Northern Nigeria Protectorate and remained a convenient administrative town for the British colonial government after the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1914. The first Governor-General, Sir Frederick Lugard, governed the new nation of Nigeria from Lokoja.
The city's population has since grown to an estimated count of over 90,000 inhabitants. It is a trade center with respect to its agricultural products; this is because it is situated at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, and is close to the new federal capital of Nigeria in Abuja. It is also home to Kogi State Polytechnic and the newly established Federal University Lokoja.

Yahaya Bello
Yahaya Bello (born June 18, 1975) is a Nigerian politician, businessman and current Governor of Kogi State. He was constitutionally declared winner of the 2015 Kogi State gubernatorial election after he was chosen on the platform of the All Progressives Congress as the replacement for the late Abubakar Audu who originally won the election.

In a statement by NEMA, Governor Wada of Kogi state is reported to have flown across the flooded area and stated:
"The situation is not only devastating but alarming by the magnitude of damages to the communities as we had just seen from the air."
But many local communities in Kogi state complain that very little has been done by the government to help protect their livelihoods that are now in danger of being swept away by the floods.
The flood in Nigeria is now spreading to Southern-Eastern states of Amanbra and Imo. NEMA warns the floods will likely continue:

(Nigeria News) Villagers forced to use boats, homes completely submerged underwater and animals seeking refuge from the encroaching waters are the scenes in Lokoja, a town in Kogi state on the frontline of the flood in Nigeria
UPDATED: 820, 282 people have been displaced across Adamawa, Benue, Taraba, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Anambra & Kogi states (latest figures released from Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency)
"The flood has taken over more than one-third of the town," says Emmanuel Idoko, a local businessman. "Some people are cut off from the town entirely."
Some of the heaviest rains for years, as well as the release of excess water from Cameroon's Lagdo dam have left hundreds of thousands displaced and unknown numbers of people dead across the country.
"This is the largest, highest flood I have experienced in my life," says one local villager as he looks out across the water. "The water now is 12.54 metres above water level."
Local communities are leaving for higher ground and local businesses are reporting a 80% drop in custom. The water supply to the town has been shut-off and electricity supply is, at best, only a few hours a day in areas not affected by the flood but people are relying on their generators.

The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, was reportedly pelted with stones and other missiles on Friday at the Lokoja Central Mosque where he was attending a special session to mark the 25th anniversary of the creation of the state.
A source close to the mosque told our correspondent in Lokoja that the governor, who had arrived the mosque behind schedule, was greeted with jeers and boos by some irate youths, at the entrance of the mosque.
“The governor was booed and missiles were thrown in his direction as he alighted from his car,” the source said.
Following the incident, our sources said the prayer session was hurriedly suspended on the advice of security personnel around.
When contacted for confirmation, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and strategy, Abdumalik Abdukarim, said the report was not true.
“I was at the mosque with the governor and I did not witness any incident like that,” he said.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, proved abortive as he did not answer calls made to his mobile telephone.

Nigeria has about 35, 000km of federal roads in its network. However despite N1.414 trillion expended on their maintenance since 1999, the roads remain death traps.
From Shagamu-Ore to Benin, Onitsha to Owerri, Gombe to Potiskum, Abuja to Lokoja, Ibadan to Ilorin among others, travellers suffer untold hardships as greater portions of the road network are in deplorable condition. These roads are ridden with potholes and gullies.

This year, two Missouri State professors were awarded fellowships through the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program. The goal of the program is to bridge the gap between North American and African learning systems.
Assistant history professor Bukola Adeyemi Oyeniyi, and associate professor of chemistry Adam Wanekaya were selected to participate in the program.
Dr. Oyeniyi will travel to Nigeria to work at Joseph Ayo Babalola University on curriculum co-development in African history and African social history, focusing on conflict resolution and peace building.
Dr. Wanekaya will initiate contact with Federal University of Lokoja in Nigeria to establish research collaboration, student mentorship and research capacity building.
The fellowship program will pair scholars with higher education institutions in Africa to collaborate on curriculum co-development, research, graduate teaching, training and mentoring activities.
