  12 October 2017, Yemen – In the immediate term, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) continues to focus on strengthening the resilience of war-affected Yemeni communities and supporting early recovery efforts, including improving livelihoods, basic social service delivery, and mine action, according to UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Regional Director for Arab States, Mourad Wahba.

  9 October 2017, Aden, Yemen – UNDP Regional Director for Arab States, Mr. Mourad Wahba visited Aden and met with Yemeni Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Obeid Bin Daghr, accompanied by Minister of Justice Judge Jamal Omar, Minster of Legal Affairs Dr. Nohal AL-Aulaqi, Secretary General of the prime Ministry Hussein Mansour, Deputy Minister of Planning Dr Nizar Basahib, and Aden First Deputy Governor Mr. Ahmed Selim Rubai.

  Aden, 23 August 2017: Aden is a test case for the concretization of post-conflict peace dividend and for the start of a post-conflict recovery phase. Yet the city’s socioeconomic, political and security conditions remain fragile and the State is struggling to improve security orders. Aden and other non-active conflict areas require additional support to help prevent negative setbacks that would adversely delay peace process and reconstruction, as well as put citizens at risk of relapse in secondary conflicts. Livelihoods and essential basic social services have not been recovered to the pre-conflict levels, fuelling a terrain for extreme poverty, violence, further displacement and instability in general. The Yemen Stabilisation Programme (YSP) focuses on two-interrelated objectives: 1) Generate knowledge on local stabilisation needs; and 2) Restore the disrupted livelihoods of the affected population that would yield to the strengthening of community-based protection mechanisms mainly focusing on women and youth. Moreover, the programme is expected to expand to other areas, which would entirely depend on mobilization of resources.

  Sana’a, 13 August 2017 - Coordination Unit of the Enhanced Rural Resilience In Yemen (ERRY) Joint Program ERRY Joint Programme, which is supported by EU, Conducted “The Consultation Workshop for ERRY Phase II” in order to provide feedback to the ERRY Joint Programme Mid Term Review and discuss on the proposed activities for the scale-up that aims to expand ERRY interventions to cover more districts and beneficiaries in the targeted governorates of Hajjah, Hodeidah, Lahj, and Abyan. The workshop also aims to provide feedback on the ERRY JP Mid-term review report. Besides the four Participating UN Originations, i.e. UNDP, WFP, FAO and ILO, 65 implementing partners and key technical staff from national institutions in Aden and Sana’a participated to the event.

• European Union and UNDP support social protection for community resilience in Yemen Jul 5, 2017

  Brussels, 5 July 2017—The European Union (EU) confirms its commitment to Yemen by providing EUR 25 million (nearly USD 27 million) to support the vulnerable Yemeni people affected by the devastating conflict. The project, to be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and local communities, will help struggling households to earn income to buy food and other essentials; keep some of the remaining healthcare facilities open and provide more psychosocial support to affected civilians.

  The war in Yemen has generated a dire humanitarian situation with massive destruction to the country’s public and private buildings. Debris has accumulated, sometimes with hazardous explosive remnants of war (ERWs) under the rubble and their accumulation is one among many obstacles in the delivery of humanitarian assistance or the resumption of services in the areas where the conflict has subsided. UNDP, thanks to funding from Government of Japan to the project ‘Immediate Support to Solid Waste Management, Debris Removal, and to Women affected by War, through Cash for Work in Yemen’, is tackling such debris at key public institutions in several districts of Aden.
