Gard
Gard (French pronunciation: [ɡaʁ]; Occitan: Gard) is a department in southern France in the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region.
The department is named after the River Gardon, and the Occitan name of the river has been replacing the French name of the department in recent decades, even among French speakers.
History

The Gard area was settled by the Romans in classical times. It was crossed by the Via Domitia, which was constructed in 118 BC.
Gard is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the ancient province of Languedoc.
It was originally intended to include the canton of Ganges in the department which would have been geographically logical, but Ganges was transferred to the neighbouring department of Hérault at the outset. In return, Gard received from Hérault the fishing port of Aigues Mortes which gave the department its own outlet to the Gulf of Lion.
During the middle of the nineteenth century the prefecture, traditionally a centre of commerce with a manufacturing sector focused on textiles, was an early beneficiary of railway development, becoming an important railway junction. Several luxurious hotels were built, and the improved market access provided by the railways also encouraged, initially, a rapid growth in wine growing: however, many of the department's viticulturalists were ruined by the arrival in 1872 of phylloxera.

Pont du Gard is part of an ancient, 26 mile water channel about in length, built mostly on or beneath the ground to carry water to Nimes. The Romans constructed this bridge across the valley about 2,000 years ago to maintain an even flow of water with just a very slight change in level, dropping only about one inch every 300 feet. This engineering feat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The river valley here is just really quite gorgeous - you have the forest and the rocky shores on both sides, which makes it a very picturesque setting. It's a huge structure with the enormous volume of stone. It's a local limestone. It was quarried from just about a quarter-mile away from the bridge itself and there's it as much volume of solid stone here equal to the solid volume of the Eiffel tower. That's how big it is, they measured it at 21,000 m³ of rock that ways 50,000 tons huge structure.

During the rule of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus the city grew in importance. The Arena was once the setting for gladiatorial battles but today it is matadors who fascinate their audiences during the Whitsuntide Feria. The amphitheatre was built in around 70 A.D. Nimes, or "Nemausus" as the Romans named their colony, developed into an important centre. In the 2nd century A.D. emperors Hadrian and Antonius Pius ordered the construction of two further splendid buildings, thus the town was enriched by fine architecture. In contrast to the famous Roman Arena at Arles the Nimes replica of the Colosseum still contains some well-preserved sections of the highest floor, the Attika. Today the beautiful view from the most highly elevated seats of the Amphitheatre extends across the rooftops of the picturesque old town of Nimes and its two thousand years of glorious history.

A lot of things impress you when traveling through the South of France. One of my favorites is the ancient stone aqueduct called the Pont du Gard.
This region is called Provence because it was the first "foreign" conquest as ancient Rome set about to building its vast empire. Since it wasn't Rome proper, they called it "Provincia Romana" (province of Rome) — and the name stuck.
The Romans left behind some impressive examples of engineering in their first province. The Pont du Gard is one of the most striking, and one of the most visited sights in all of France. And even after many visits, I’m forever impressed by the ability of the ancient Roman engineers. This structure, built with perfectly cut stones fitted together without mortar, was designed to slope ever so slightly — less than an inch every hundred yards — as part of a 30-mile canal system that let water flow effortlessly into the city of Nîmes.
The classic view of the aqueduct, from the river, is something every visitor sees. But here’s a peek at the actual stream the Romans created — on the top of that structure. Six times a day, for €4, you can follow a guide (like Michael, who you’ll meet in this clip) and actually walk the length of this ancient bridge...an experience you’d miss if you visited without a good guidebook.

It is believed that it grew to its present size of approximately ninety five thousand hectares in around 8,000 B.C.A number of the region's inhabitants are as famous as the landscape of the South of France such as the famous white horses of the Camargue. Bulls are extremely popular with the local inhabitants. They are often the centre of attention during the region's mostly non-bloody bull fights known as 'Corridas'.Up to the end of September the farmland of the Camargue's rice farmers is flooded with water up to twenty centimetres deep but there are also colourful fields with an abundance of sunflowers. However, the cultivation of rice also has its drawbacks. Due to the increasing desalinisation of the land the fragile ecosystem is gradually being undermined. However, the people of the Camargue are well aware of this danger to their wildlife and are actively engaged in preserving their unique world of swamps.Thus the natural colours of the Camargue and its captivating, charismatic inhabitants will continue to enchant visitors for many more years to come.

One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to be obeyed! The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture. King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king's crusade to Egypt, the town's inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town's inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history. But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

Charlie (4 August 2016 – 28 July 2017) was born with a rare, incurable and life-limiting disease called MDDS. Tirs de régulation sur sanglier dans le Gard
Les problèmes liés aux dégâts commis par les sangliers, sur certains secteurs du Gard, sont difficilement supportables par le monde agricole. Les louvetiers et les chasseurs font ce qu'ils peuvent pour limiter la "casse". A l'heure où ce clip est mis en ligne, ce sont 42000 sangliers qui ont été abattus, aussi bien par la chasse traditionnelle que par les prélèvements comme ceux que vous découvrez. L’occasion de mettre au jour les petits secrets de ce monument inscrit sur la liste des Biens du patrimoine mondial par l'UNESCO, l’un des plus visités de France. Mais on a trop tendance à réduire l’Aqueduc au spectaculaire Pont du Gard. Jean Louis Paillet, architecte archéologue est l’un des plus grands spécialistes des aqueducs romains en Europe. Il a passé sa vie à étudier celui de Nîmes pour comprendre l’ensemble du dispositif. En sa compagnie, nous partons dans la garrigue, pour découvrir des ouvrages d’art méconnus de l’aqueduc comme le Pont de La Lone, le Pont Roupt, les Tunnels de Sernhac…
Terminus de notre voyage : Nîmes bien sur. Surprise, la cité antique créée autour d’une source naturelle n’avait pas un besoin vital en eau. L’aqueduc servait en fait un programme de prestige qui permit à Nemausus de devenir l’une des plus belles cités romaines. Il reste aujourd’hui encore des vestiges parmi les mieux conservés du monde romain : la Maison Carrée, la Tour Magne et bien sur l’Amphithéâtre. Apres la découverte des coulisses des arènes avec Michael Couzigou, Eric Teyssier, agrégé d'histoire, licencié en archéologie, nous fait revivre les jeux romains. Pour finir, nous retrouvons au musée archéologique de Nîmes, Jean Claude Golvin. Archéologue et chercheur attaché au CNRS, Jean Claude est à la fois un scientifique et un artiste. Il a réalisé plus de 800 restitutions qui permettre de mieux appréhender cette civilisation romaine et de remonter de façon concrète aux sources de la romanité.

Le Nord-est du département du Gard offre des paysages sauvages, un plateau de garrigues entaillé par des cours d’eau où les hommes ont du faire preuve d’imagination pour vivre en harmonie avec un environnement exigeant. Nous commençons nos escapades en compagnie d’Antoine Gonzales de l’association « Itinéraire Cèze » au splendide village de Montclus, sur les rives de la Cèze. Un cours d’eau qui a du caractère et qui lors des épisodes cévenols sort facilement de son lit. Avec Isabelle Puglisi-Lelièvre, éducatrice à l’environnement « Itinéraire Cèze », nous partons ensuite à la découverte de gorges hors du commun, les Concluses de Lussan. Une approche pleine de sensibilité de ce patrimoine naturel. L’histoire du Gard est marquée par la conquête romaine. Nous retrouvons Laurent Vidal, archéologue à l’Inrap, au Camp de César, situé sur la commune de Laudun-l'Ardoise, Une ville antique de 18 hectares sur une terrasse calcaire à 200 mètres au-dessus du sillon rhodanien. L'oppidum Gallo-Romain, présente des vestiges de cinq périodes d'occupation successives, du premier âge du Fer au Moyen-âge : remparts, nécropoles, quartiers d'habitations, basilique, forum,.... Les romains ont légué, entre autre, à ce territoire la viticulture. C’est au milieu des vignes que nous retrouvons Alexandre Pau, pour des « vendanges archéologiques ». Professeur d’histoire, Alexandre a noué une relation passionnée avec cette terre. Président de l’association « Muses et Hommes », il se bat avec d’autres bénévoles pour protéger et sauvegarder le patrimoine de son village, Sabran. Avec le même intérêt pour le château médiéval des seigneurs de Sabran que le patrimoine modeste comme une cabane en pierre de bergers. Enfin, nous partons à l’autre extrémité du plateau pour découvrir, avec Anne Lise Moreau, « la perle de la garrigue », Uzès.

A l'heure où ce clip est mis en ligne, ce sont 42000 sangliers qui ont été abattus, aussi bien par la chasse traditionnelle que par les prélèvements comme ceux que vous découvrez.
