Sometimes it's the setting and action I prefer over bold colors. This monotone scene played out in the wind on an overcast day. I was amused that both the Willet and the Sanderling seemed so convinced their next meal was clearly at opposite ends of the beach.

During the molt, many birds look scraggly at best, but the male Summer Tanager is one of my favorites during this phase. I find the patchwork of colors just as beautiful as the male's full red breeding color, so I photographed this one as quickly as possible.

I've gone for two-hour walks and not seen a single bird. To fill the time, I photograph other parts of nature along the way, flowers, butterflies, etc. That's how I came upon this simple Coneflower with a Crab Spider waiting for an insect to come along.

I had checked off the Hooded Warbler species a few years ago by photographing the bright yellow female, but the male eluded me until this year. I was photographing another bird when this guy showed up and got my undivided attention for the short time he was there.

I followed this Green Sweat Bee as he flew among plants, never staying long. Then he landed on this White Aster and stayed. I don't have a great relationship with sweat bees. One has landed behind my knee more than once as I squatted to photograph a flower.

If you are not familiar with this bird, it might be confusing. This is a juvenile Little Blue Heron. One theory of its white color is that it allows it to mingle with Great Egrets, which would provide it more safety while feeding in greater numbers.

I'm back, but still catching up. As I continue sorting through photos from my trip, I'll post a mix of pictures from current and past travels. I'll also try to play a little catchup with more frequent posts this week.

It will take some time for me to catch up on replies, but I sincerely appreciate each follow, like, retweet, and comment. I’ll return to civilization sometime tomorrow.

This immature male Chestnut-sided Warbler was a first for me. Although it has a small range in Tennessee, I caught this one on migration. I was adjusting my camera for changing light conditions, and when I looked up he was in a nearby tree. I quickly got this shot.

I’m still off grid but drove out to civilization to share the Great Crested Flycatcher. I don’t have time to reply now but hope to catch up in a few days. Thanks for all of your kind comments.

I photograph every bird I see, even if it is one that is familiar to me. However, I'm always hoping to see certain birds. The Great Crested Flycatcher is one of them. I stopped photographing other birds just to get a quick shot of this one before he flew away.

While I occasionally get a shot of the Brown Thrasher on a branch in the clear, this is how I most often find and photograph him. He is quite the singer with more than 1,100 songs but moves silently in the underbrush when people approach, hiding his lovely plumage and eye.

Today I'm heading into another one of my almost famous off-grid outings, somewhere with few conveniences, including the internet. I will be able to drive several miles and pick up a signal. So, I'll post and respond as best I can, if at all, for the next week.

Birds like water, so when I positioned myself near dense brush along the backwaters of a river, I was reasonably expectant. After about 30 minutes, this Yellow Warbler came through, working each leaf and limb for insects. When he paused in front of me, I got this shot.

The Gila Woodpecker is limited primarily to southern Arizona in the US and depends heavily on the massive Saguaro Cactus. This distant male on the upper part of a 30-foot Saguaro was my first glimpse of the Gila and the only shot I got of it that day.

This Pied-billed Grebe had been swimming and diving in a shallow lake. At first, he was too far away to get a good photo, but he moved closer and stopped diving. By the time he got within camera range, he had fluffed out his feathers, apparently beginning to dry out.

For some reason, I'm seeing more butterflies these days than birds, so I thought it only appropriate to post one. This Gulf Fritillary is one of the brightest orange butterflies in Tennessee. I'm sure I looked as comical as I felt trying to capture this one.

It had been a good birding day when this male Northern Cardinal joined the show. He was still working through a molt but was already one of the most stunning birds in the forest. Unfortunately, he didn't stick around, and this is the only photo I got.

Like most birds that glean insects from foliage, the Carolina Chickadee loves to zip through trees non-stop. Fortunately, they do occasionally pause, look around, and sometimes call. I was able to capture this one on an open branch with trees in the distant background.

This is the Cassin's Finch. An immature male looks like a female, so we can't be sure of the sex. One eye is barely peeking open in this shot. He/she dozed off and on, a clear sign this bird was comfortable with me taking its photo. I love these moments of being accepted.
