Every day, migrants risk their lives attempting to crossing the vast stretches of desert along the U.S. border with Mexico. Hundreds die from hypothermia, dehydration or exposure to the elements. A small group of volunteers who call themselves the Desert Angels have made it their mission to comb the desert, hoping to save lives before border crossers low on water and supplies, in need of medical aid, or simply lost, die making the perilous journey. Despite the rhetoric in Washington D.C. over immigration reform, Trump's border wall and the debate over DACA, on the front lines U.S. policy has been to prioritize providing medical aid and saving lives when possible, but border agents can't help who they can't find, which makes the volunteers the only hope for those dying in the desert. Erin Farnsworth, Vice President of the Council of the Americas, gives us insight into Mexico's economic growth strategy.
The economy of Mexico is the 15th largest in the world in nominal terms and the 11th largest by purchasing power parity, according to the International Monetary Fund. Since the 1994 crisis, administrations have improved the country's macroeconomic fundamentals. Mexico was not significantly influenced by the recent 2002 South American crisis, and maintained positive, although low, rates of growth after a brief period of stagnation in 2001. Mexico was one of the Latin American nations most affected by the 2008 recession with its Gross Domestic Product contracting by more than 6%. In spite of the Mexican economy's unprecedented macroeconomic stability, which has reduced inflation and interest rates to record lows and has increased per capita income, enormous gaps remain between the urban and ...
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto says a rise in fuel prices is necessary to stabilise the economy, but many Mexicans disagree. For days now tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in protest. Several have died and hundreds arrested. They fear a domino effect, with the price of other goods going up too. The President admits raising prices at the pumps was a difficult decision, but is confident it's the right one. So will the price hike help or hurt the economy. Anchor Phillip Yin and Oscar Ugarteche, a professor at the National University of Mexico, discuss the economy of Mexico.
Smartphone technology has transformed the world as we know it. Having an app for almost everything is big business. It has created a so-called “app economy” that has boosted job growth around the world. And Mexico is one country benefiting from that shift. CGTN’s Denny Alfonso reports.
Mexico announced on Friday that 26 percent of its Gross Domestic Product comes from the informal sector; a figure that reveals how deeply rooted the shadow economy has been in the country. The report, the first one of its kind in Latin America, was published by Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) that deals with population and economic censuses. The report measured the informal economy from 2003 to 2012. Hair dresser Irma Serafin has been cutting hair in a makeshift shack in a busy Mexico City pavement for 5 years. Serafin, who charges a little more than 2 US dollars for a man's haircut, said she couldn't afford to have a shop. As a member of the informal economy, which makes up 60 percent of the entire workforce in Mexico, Serafin doesn't pay taxes. She s...

Many passengers are tired of the constant noise, and sales pitches of the Vagoneros and the city's police are redoubling their efforts to kick them out. A short critical movie on the health system of Mexico. Meet Juan and Jorge. Two boys form Mexico City... As some American senior citizens find it difficult to afford health care, many have moved to Mexico as an alternative for treatment and medicine. Kelly Cobiella reports from the town of Manzanillo.
With obesity levels rivaling those seen in the United States, Mexico has launched a rigorous campaign to combat the epidemic, including taxes on sugary drinks and other high-calorie snack foods. How well is that strategy is working -- and what lessons can U.S. policy makers learn from their Mexican counterparts?
Sewage is pumped into the water reservoir of Hidalgo, which area residents say is taking a toll on their health. TRT World’s Alasdair Baverstock reports from Hidalgo, Mexico.
Just a decade ago, half of all Mexicans — 52 million people — had no health insurance. As many as 4 million families a year faced financial ruin because of catastrophic illness, like breast cancer. Today, those same families have access to treatment because of Seguro Popular. The universal health care initiative, launched in 2003 and largely powered by Harvard research, is funded with less than 1 percent of the country’s GDP. It has gradually expanded to cover a range of catastrophic illnesses. Breast cancer, with its fast-rising rates and ever-younger victims, was added in 2007. Mexico has produced a staggering number of elite boxers. Nearly 150 professional world titles have been won by fighters from Mexico. Whilst they've enjoyed success in the pro ranks, in recent times Mexico's amateur fighters have struggled somewhat. They haven't won an Olympic medal since the 2000 Sydney Games. However, the Mexican Boxing Federation is looking to put this right in the years ahead and they've established a new Youth Development Programme to nurture young fighters. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil. Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelin...

It may seem bizarre to put the words “Mennonites” and “Drugs” in the same sentence, but for years some members of the God-fearing religious community has been smuggling narcotics from Mexico into the United States and Canada. It started with a patriarch named Abe Harms, who fled Ontario after being busted for marijuana smuggling and set up a drug-running operation in Mexico. But when his son Enrique took over the family crime business, they graduated to moving massive amounts of cocaine across the border. That caught the eye of American drug investigators. U.S. authorities carried out large-scale undercover operations and drug busts -- and now Enrique is a man on the run. The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings. Until the Spanish conquest, the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors. Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-...

http://www.expedia.com/Riviera-Maya.d602901.Destination-Travel-Guides From frothy drinks on stunning beaches to guided tours of ancient ruins, the Riviera Maya has it all. Located on the eastern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, the Riviera Maya is just a half-hour away from the party town of Cancun. If you’re looking for something a little quieter in your vacation, start your Riviera Maya tour in Puerto Morelos, a quaint fishing town where you can rent a catamaran for an afternoon at sea, or say “buenos días” to a reptile at Crococun Zoo. Playa del Carmen is a great home base for those who want to explore the rest of the Riviera Maya. Distinctly European in its architecture and layout, you’ll find plenty of charming places to stay, and enough boutique shopping and restaurants t...

Mexico is considered by many people as a very dangerous country. News stories of kidnapping, drug violence, and murder, seem to be one of the countries top exports after tequila. Many Canadians and Americans stick to Riviera Maya and Los Cabos, and are fearful to leave there resorts. But is Mexico really that dangerous? I've been living here for over a year, and have a completely different view on the country. This is the most interesting country I have travelled it (and I've been to 50). Pick a category... nature, food, history, culture, people, this country has the best of it all. It's been my mission for 2 years to help share this. I teamed up with my friend Ale Ivanova, who has also been living in Mexico for several years, to talk about our experiences here. Is Mexico safe for tr...

Life in the Mexican capital throws up many obstacles, but as we found out in the return of our long-running film series, a small number of dedicated people are trying to build an electronic music scene in one of the world's most chaotic cities. Mexico City is one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises in the world, but its electronic music scene has yet to truly flourish. It's a city where vast inequality, crime and widespread corruption are everyday realities, and where nightclubs are largely reserved for the moneyed elites. For those who put music first, there are many obstacles—a lack of venues, a limited audience, very little financial gain. Whether you're putting on parties, releasing music or hustling for gigs, making ends meet is a constant struggle. But the issue also runs ...
