Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (/ˈpjɔːtər iːˈljiːtʃ tʃaɪˈkɒfski/;Russian: Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский;tr. Pyotr Ilyich Chaykovsky; 25 April/7 May 1840 – 25 October/6 November 1893), often anglicized as Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was a Russian composer of the late-Romantic period, some of whose works are among the most popular music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, bolstered by his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe and the United States. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884, by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension.

Romeo and Juliet is an orchestral work composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is styled an Overture-Fantasy, and is based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, Romeo and Juliet does not have an opus number. In 1880, ten years after his first reworking of the piece, Tchaikovsky rewrote the ending and gave the piece the sub-title "Overture-Fantasia". It was completed by September 10, 1880, but did not receive its premiere until May 1, 1886, in Tbilisi, Georgia (then part of the Russian Empire), under Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov. Conductor: Julian Kovatchev Orchestra: Sofia Festival Orchestra Love Theme at 14:55 Paint: Il Bacio, Francesco Heyez (1859).

www.FiveMinuteMozart.com www.Facebook.com/FiveMinuteMozart Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7th, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. Unlike in many European countries, a serious career in music was not as socially acceptable in Russia during this time. For this reason, Tchaikovsky first studied law and then worked for a few years as a government clerk. His inner drive to become a musician eventually led him to quit his job and, in 1861, enter the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he studied composition under Anton Rubinstein. After graduating in 1866, Tchaikovsky was employed as a harmony teacher at the Moscow Conservatory. However, he was able to retire when, in 1877, he was granted annuity from Nadezhda von Meck who commissioned him in return for his compositions. Even though, by mutual...

Tchaikovsky's musical scores are lyrical, romantic and deeply emotional. This film endeavours to put the composer in context alongside Tolstoy as one of the most celebrated Russians of his time, examining his continuing significance in Russia today, and visiting locations which were important in Tchaikovsky's life. His life is scoured to reveal an abortive marriage, his true feelings about homosexuality and how this may have been expressed in his music. Contributors include pianists Mikhail Rudy and Yevgeni Kissin, violinist Maxim Vengerov, conductor Valery Gergiev, ballerina Natalia Makarova, opera director Graham Vick and the Tchaikovsky-loving tram driver, Valentina. Filmmaker Christopher Nupen about the film: "When Manfred Grater of WDR Television in Cologne (the best head of any television music department that the world has seen so far) challenged us to try and make a film about the music of Tchaikovsky, without dressing up an actor and asking him to pretend to be the composer, he brought me back to the genius of a great artist with the passion of a convert. After working at it for more than a year, we realised that there was too much to be contained in a single television film and we ended up making two. The first - Tchaikovsky's Women - looks at the destinies of the women both in his private life and in his music. It looks also at the influence of each on the other. The second - this one - follows Tchaikovsky's relationship with Nadezhda von Mec...
