Beethoven worked on the Fifth Symphony for more than four years, completing it in 1808, and introducing it on December 22 of that year at what must have been one of the most extraordinary concerts in history. The marathon program included the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies; the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80; the Fourth Piano Concerto; and parts of the Mass in C. Vienna was in the grip of exceptionally cold weather, the hall was unheated, and the musicians woefully under-prepared. As Schindler noted, "the reception accorded to these works was not as desired, and probably no better than the author himself had expected. The public was not endowed with the necessary degree of comprehension for such extraordinary music, and the performance left a great deal to be desired."
Following early indifference, the public only gradually began to come to terms with the Fifth. One of its earliest proponents, the poet and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote, "How this magnificent composition carries the listener on and on in a continually ascending climax into the ghostly world of infinity!...the human breast, squeezed by monstrous presentiments and destructive powers, seems to gasp for breath; soon a kindly figure approaches full of radiance, and illuminates the depths of terrifying night." In his Howard's End, E.M. Forster writes of the work, suggesting that it satisfies "all sort and conditions." The characters of Helen and Tibby know the work well, the latter even describing "the transitional passage on the drum" before the finale. That Forster dwelt at such length on the work shows the extent to which it had become absorbed into the Romantic consciousness.
Hermann Kretzschmar wrote of the "stirring dogged and desperate struggle" of the first movement, one of the most concentrated of all Beethoven's symphonic sonata movements. It is derived almost exclusively from the rhythmic cell of the opening, which is even felt in the accompaniment of the second subject group. There follows a variation movement in which cellos introduce the theme, increasingly elaborated and with shorter note values at every reappearance. A second, hymn-like motif is heard as its counterfoil.
The tripartite scherzo follows; the main idea is based on an ominous arpeggio figure, but we hear also the omnipresent "Fate" rhythm, exactly as it is experienced in the first movement. The central section, which replaces the customary trio, is a pounding fugato beginning in the cellos and basses, and then running through the rest of the orchestra. Of particular structural interest is the inter-linking bridge passage which connects the last two movements. Over the drumbeat referred to by Forster's Tibby, the music climbs inexorably toward the tremendous assertion of C major triumph at the start of the finale. The epic grandeur of the music, now with martial trombones and piccolo added (the Fifth also calls for contrabassoon), has irresistible drive and sweep, though that eventual victory is still some way off is suggested by the return of the ominous scherzo figure during the extended development.

In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presented a series of live simulcasts called LA Phil LIVE. This special series included full-concert performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by dynamic Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, live from both Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles as well as Dudamel's home nation, Venezuela. LA Phil LIVE provided fans with access to a unique concert experience that included exclusive interviews, backstage access, Q&A; with Gustavo Dudamel and guest artists, special hosts and more.
In preparation for the second of these LA Phil LIVE simulcasts, Gustavo Dudamel and the orchestra tirelessly rehearsed Tchaikovsky's Shakespeare-inspired singe-movement orchestral fantasies.
In this archival video footage from 2011, Gustavo Dudamel guides the orchestra through refinement of a section in Tchaiovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture. The first Los Angeles Philharmonic performance of this Tchaikovsky piece was in March 1921, nearly a century prior to the LA Phil Live concert for which the orchestra was rehearsing.
This overture was a single-movement piece inspired by Shakespeare's play of the same name. Tchaikovsky also wrote works inspired by The Tempest and Hamlet. The overall design of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture is that of a symphonic tone poem based on three major elements of the Shakespeare story.
In this rehearsal footage, Dudamel focuses on a section roughly 5-1/2 minutes into the piece, bringing particular attention to articulation, tempo, score notations and maximization of clarity between orchestral sections.

Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramírez (born January 26, 1981) is a Venezuelan conductor and violinist. He is the music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Life and career
Early life
Dudamel was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, the son of a trombonist and a voice teacher. He studied music from an early age, becoming involved with El Sistema, the famous Venezuelan musical education program, and took up the violin at age ten. He soon began to study composition. He attended the Jacinto Lara Conservatory, where José Luis Jiménez was among his violin teachers. He then went on to work with José Francisco del Castillo at the Latin-American Violin Academy.
Dudamel began to study conducting in 1995, first with Rodolfo Saglimbeni, then later with José Antonio Abreu. In 1999, he was appointed music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, the national youth orchestra of Venezuela, and toured several countries. He attended Charles Dutoit's master class in Buenos Aires in 2002, and worked as assistant for Simon Rattle in Berlin and Salzburg in 2003.

Vienna was in the grip of exceptionally cold weather, the hall was unheated, and the musicians woefully under-prepared. As Schindler noted, "the reception accorded to these works was not as desired, and probably no better than the author himself had expected. The public was not endowed with the necessary degree of comprehension for such extraordinary music, and the performance left a great deal to be desired."
Following early indifference, the public only gradually began to come to terms with the Fifth. One of its earliest proponents, the poet and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote, "How this magnificent composition carries the listener on and on in a continually ascending climax into the ghostly world of infinity!...the human breast, squeezed by monstrous presentiments and destructive powers, seems to gasp for breath; soon a kindly figure approaches full of radiance, and illuminates the depths of terrifying night." In his Howard's End, E.M. Forster writes of the work, suggesting that it satisfies "all sort and conditions." The characters of Helen and Tibby know the work well, the latter even describing "the transitional passage on the drum" before the finale. That Forster dwelt at such length on the work shows the extent to which it had become absorbed into the Romantic consciousness.
Hermann Kretzschmar wrote of the "stirring dogged and desperate struggle" of the first movement, one of the most concentrated of all Beethoven's symphonic sonata movements. It is derived almost exclusively from the rhythmic cell of the opening, which is even felt in the accompaniment of the second subject group. There follows a variation movement in which cellos introduce the theme, increasingly elaborated and with shorter note values at every reappearance. A second, hymn-like motif is heard as its counterfoil.
The tripartite scherzo follows; the main idea is based on an ominous arpeggio figure, but we hear also the omnipresent "Fate" rhythm, exactly as it is experienced in the first movement. The central section, which replaces the customary trio, is a pounding fugato beginning in the cellos and basses, and then running through the rest of the orchestra. Of particular structural interest is the inter-linking bridge passage which connects the last two movements. Over the drumbeat referred to by Forster's Tibby, the music climbs inexorably toward the tremendous assertion of C major triumph at the start of the finale. The epic grandeur of the music, now with martial trombones and piccolo added (the Fifth also calls for contrabassoon), has irresistible drive and sweep, though that eventual victory is still some way off is suggested by the return of the ominous scherzo figure during the extended development.

In this archival video footage from 2011, Gustavo Dudamel guides the orchestra through refinement of a section in Tchaiovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture. The first Los Angeles Philharmonic performance of this Tchaikovsky piece was in March 1921, nearly a century prior to the LA Phil Live concert for which the orchestra was rehearsing.
This overture was a single-movement piece inspired by Shakespeare's play of the same name. Tchaikovsky also wrote works inspired by The Tempest and Hamlet. The overall design of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture is that of a symphonic tone poem based on three major elements of the Shakespeare story.
In this rehearsal footage, Dudamel focuses on a section roughly 5-1/2 minutes into the piece, bringing particular attention to articulation, tempo, score notations and maximization of clarity between orchestral sections.
The music of Tchaikovsky will be in the spotlight at the Hollywood Bowl as conductor Lionel Bringuier conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in performances of Rococo Variations and this Romeo and Juliet overture on July 9, 2015. Get tickets at http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/romeo.

As principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony, Dudamel opened the door to starting up the renowned Venezuelan musical education programme El Sistema in Sweden. The world-famous conductor is the product of El Sistema in Venezuela, where he was music director of the Simón Bolívar national youth orchestra in Caracas. As principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony, Dudamel opened the door to starting up the renowned Venezuelan musical education programme El Sistema in Sweden. The world-famous conductor is the product of El Sistema in Venezuela, where he was music director of the Simón Bolívar national youth orchestra in Caracas. His message is that music must reach out to all citizens, to all children, as a basic human right. Music makes us grow as human beings.
With Gustavo Dudamel at the forefront, El Sistema in Sweden adopted the Venezuelan model of training orchestras and choirs: music as a tool for building community. In 2007 Dudamel became the principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony; in 2009 he became music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and in 2010 he was named Gothenburger of the year. Today Dudamel is an honorary conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony.
The interview with Dudamel was shot in the conductor's office at the Gothenburg Concert Hall. YOSA Music Director Troy Peters will explore how the traditions and practice of orchestral conducting can offer insights to help all of us lead and collaborate more effectively. Working with a small orchestra of live musicians, Peters will demonstrate what a conductor does on the podium, with the goal of unleashing the maximum potential of each musician on stage.
Troy Peters has been Music Director of YOSA (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) since 2009. Sobre Sound named his “OK Computer Live” project, in which a dozen local bands covered Radiohead’s landmark album backed by YOSA at the Tobin Center, as San Antonio’s top moment in music for 2015.
He has guest conducted many orchestras, including the Oregon Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, and Vermont Symphony Orchestra. He was previously Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, and conducted college orchestras at Texas State University and Middlebury College.

Watch the incredible Christchurch Youth Orchestra, led by Helen Renaud, open the day with 'Te Papa' composed by Gareth Farr.
Christchurch bassoonist, saxophonist and conductor, Helen Renaud is currently the HOD of Music at Burnside High School. She studied bassoon at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music, and Music History at the University of Victoria, before receiving her teaching qualification. In 2009 she graduated with a Masters in Music from the University of Melbourne, where she focused on conducting. It was here that she was taught by the late Professor John Hopkins OBE, and Richard Gill OAM.
Since then she has been working to develop her conducting skills as the Conductor of the Burnside High School Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Junior Concert Band. She is currently studying part time for her Doctorate in Musical Arts, looking at rehearsal techniques for high school and youth ensembles.
Helen was appointed to the rolls of Conductor of the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Youth Orchestra, and Musical Director of the New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds in 2016.

Dudamel & Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela - Beethoven Egmont Overture
Gustavo Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela (all grown up without “Youth” in their title) quickly sold out two nights at the Royal Festival Hall in the Southbank Centre. We were engaged to provide remote control camera footage for live streams to both to the Guardian website and to the cinema screen elsewhere in the venue. Footage was also used by the orchestra and a section featuring a surprise encore from Bryn Terfel was used on BBC’s Newsnight. They featured Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Third Symphony, Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Strauss’s mighty Eine Alpinesinfonie and Benzecry’s Amerindian Rituals. The young musicians of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and their conductor Gustavo Dudamel invite the worldwide TV audience to an exceptional concert from the newly opened Concert Hall in Caracas. A rousing choice of Venezuelan and Latin-American classics is to be experienced through the compositions of Perez Prado, Arturo Marquez, Silvestre Revueltas and Astor Piazzolla. Nowadays, the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra is regarded as a sensation in classical music. The Venezuelan youth orchestra consists of graduates of the unique Venezuelan music education system. The result is an incredibly virtuoso and passionate orchestra sound. The conductor Gustavo Dudamel is a "child" of this system. The members of the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble, which was founded in 2003, are also from the midst of this orchestra. They play two pieces composed by their own musicians. Alexis Cárdenas' ensemble consists of eight of the best-known musicians of Venezuela. They play a mixture of improvised virtuosity and tender melancholy of the various Venezuelan folk music traditions. The repertoire flows from the stirring Joropo across Venezuelan waltzes to the Merengue.

Beethoven worked on the Fifth Symphony for more than four years, completing it in 1808, and introducing it on December 22 of that year at what must have been one of the most extraordinary concerts in history. The marathon program included the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies; the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80; the Fourth Piano Concerto; and parts of the Mass in C. Vienna was in the grip of exceptionally cold weather, the hall was unheated, and the musicians woefully under-prepared. As Schindler noted, "the reception accorded to these works was not as desired, and probably no better than the author himself had expected. The public was not endowed with the necessary degree of comprehension for such extraordinary music, and the performance left a great deal to be desired."
Following early indifference, the public only gradually began to come to terms with the Fifth. One of its earliest proponents, the poet and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote, "How this magnificent composition carries the listener on and on in a continually ascending climax into the ghostly world of infinity!...the human breast, squeezed by monstrous presentiments and destructive powers, seems to gasp for breath; soon a kindly figure approaches full of radiance, and illuminates the depths of terrifying night." In his Howard's End, E.M. Forster writes of the work, suggesting that it satisfies "all sort and conditions." The characters of Helen and Tibby know the work well, the latter even describing "the transitional passage on the drum" before the finale. That Forster dwelt at such length on the work shows the extent to which it had become absorbed into the Romantic consciousness.
Hermann Kretzschmar wrote of the "stirring dogged and desperate struggle" of the first movement, one of the most concentrated of all Beethoven's symphonic sonata movements. It is derived almost exclusively from the rhythmic cell of the opening, which is even felt in the accompaniment of the second subject group. There follows a variation movement in which cellos introduce the theme, increasingly elaborated and with shorter note values at every reappearance. A second, hymn-like motif is heard as its counterfoil.
The tripartite scherzo follows; the main idea is based on an ominous arpeggio figure, but we hear also the omnipresent "Fate" rhythm, exactly as it is experienced in the first movement. The central section, which replaces the customary trio, is a pounding fugato beginning in the cellos and basses, and then running through the rest of the orchestra. Of particular structural interest is the inter-linking bridge passage which connects the last two movements. Over the drumbeat referred to by Forster's Tibby, the music climbs inexorably toward the tremendous assertion of C major triumph at the start of the finale. The epic grandeur of the music, now with martial trombones and piccolo added (the Fifth also calls for contrabassoon), has irresistible drive and sweep, though that eventual victory is still some way off is suggested by the return of the ominous scherzo figure during the extended development.

In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presented a series of live simulcasts called LA Phil LIVE. This special series included full-concert performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by dynamic Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, live from both Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles as well as Dudamel's home nation, Venezuela. LA Phil LIVE provided fans with access to a unique concert experience that included exclusive interviews, backstage access, Q&A; with Gustavo Dudamel and guest artists, special hosts and more.
In preparation for the second of these LA Phil LIVE simulcasts, Gustavo Dudamel and the orchestra tirelessly rehearsed Tchaikovsky's Shakespeare-inspired singe-movement orchestral fantasies.
In this archival video footage from 2011, Gustavo Dudamel guides the orchestra through refinement of a section in Tchaiovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture. The first Los Angeles Philharmonic performance of this Tchaikovsky piece was in March 1921, nearly a century prior to the LA Phil Live concert for which the orchestra was rehearsing.
This overture was a single-movement piece inspired by Shakespeare's play of the same name. Tchaikovsky also wrote works inspired by The Tempest and Hamlet. The overall design of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture is that of a symphonic tone poem based on three major elements of the Shakespeare story.
In this rehearsal footage, Dudamel focuses on a section roughly 5-1/2 minutes into the piece, bringing particular attention to articulation, tempo, score notations and maximization of clarity between orchestral sections.
The music of Tchaikovsky will be in the spotlight at the Hollywood Bowl as conductor Lionel Bringuier conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in performances of Rococo Variations and this Romeo and Juliet overture on July 9, 2015. Get tickets at http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/romeo.

We were engaged to provide remote control camera footage for live streams to both to the Guardian website and to the cinema screen elsewhere in the venue. Footage was also used by the orchestra and a section featuring a surprise encore from Bryn Terfel was used on BBC’s Newsnight.
They featured Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Third Symphony, Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Strauss’s mighty Eine Alpinesinfonie and Benzecry’s Amerindian Rituals.

Beethoven worked on the Fifth Symphony for more than four years, completing it in 1808, and introducing it on December 22 of that year at what must have been one of the most extraordinary concerts in history. The marathon program included the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies; the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80; the Fourth Piano Concerto; and parts of the Mass in C. Vienna was in the grip of exceptionally cold weather, the hall was unheated, and the musicians woefully under-prepared. As Schindler noted, "the reception accorded to these works was not as desired, and probably no better than the author himself had expected. The public was not endowed with the necessary degree of comprehension for such extraordinary music, and the performance left a great deal to be desired."
Following early indifference, the public only gradually began to come to terms with the Fifth. One of its earliest proponents, the poet and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote, "How this magnificent composition carries the listener on and on in a continually ascending climax into the ghostly world of infinity!...the human breast, squeezed by monstrous presentiments and destructive powers, seems to gasp for breath; soon a kindly figure approaches full of radiance, and illuminates the depths of terrifying night." In his Howard's End, E.M. Forster writes of the work, suggesting that it satisfies "all sort and conditions." The characters of Helen and Tibby know the work well, the latter even describing "the transitional passage on the drum" before the finale. That Forster dwelt at such length on the work shows the extent to which it had become absorbed into the Romantic consciousness.
Hermann Kretzschmar wrote of the "stirring dogged and desperate struggle" of the first movement, one of the most concentrated of all Beethoven's symphonic sonata movements. It is derived almost exclusively from the rhythmic cell of the opening, which is even felt in the accompaniment of the second subject group. There follows a variation movement in which cellos introduce the theme, increasingly elaborated and with shorter note values at every reappearance. A second, hymn-like motif is heard as its counterfoil.
The tripartite scherzo follows; the main idea is based on an ominous arpeggio figure, but we hear also the omnipresent "Fate" rhythm, exactly as it is experienced in the first movement. The central section, which replaces the customary trio, is a pounding fugato beginning in the cellos and basses, and then running through the rest of the orchestra. Of particular structural interest is the inter-linking bridge passage which connects the last two movements. Over the drumbeat referred to by Forster's Tibby, the music climbs inexorably toward the tremendous assertion of C major triumph at the start of the finale. The epic grandeur of the music, now with martial trombones and piccolo added (the Fifth also calls for contrabassoon), has irresistible drive and sweep, though that eventual victory is still some way off is suggested by the return of the ominous scherzo figure during the extended development.

Interview with Gustavo Dudamel about El Sistema.
As principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony, Dudamel opened the door to starting up the renowned Venezuelan musical education programme El Sistema in Sweden. The world-famous conductor is the product of El Sistema in Venezuela, where he was music director of the Simón Bolívar national youth orchestra in Caracas. His message is that music must reach out to all citizens, to all children, as a basic human right. Music makes us grow as human beings.
With Gustavo Dudamel at the forefront, El Sistema in Sweden adopted the Venezuelan model of training orchestras and choirs: music as a tool for building community. In 2007 Dudamel became the principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony; in 2009 he became music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and in 2010 he was named Gothenburger of the year. Today Dudamel is an honorary conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony.
The interview with Dudamel was shot in the conductor's office at the Gothenburg Concert Hall. It is part of a series of film shorts about El Sistema by Sergio Joselovsky, with funding from the Cultural Affairs Secretariat of the Västra Götaland Region, the Angered School of Culture, the Gothenburg Symphony and El Sistema Gothenburg.
