Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramírez (born January 26, 1981) is a Venezuelan conductor and violinist. He is the music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Dudamel was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, the son of a trombonist and a voice teacher. He studied music from an early age, becoming involved with El Sistema, the famous Venezuelan musical education program, and took up the violin at age ten. He soon began to study composition. He attended the Jacinto Lara Conservatory, where José Luis Jiménez was among his violin teachers. He then went on to work with José Francisco del Castillo at the Latin-American Violin Academy.
Dudamel began to study conducting in 1995, first with Rodolfo Saglimbeni, then later with José Antonio Abreu. In 1999, he was appointed music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, the national youth orchestra of Venezuela, and toured several countries. He attended Charles Dutoit's master class in Buenos Aires in 2002, and worked as assistant for Simon Rattle in Berlin and Salzburg in 2003.

The world-famous conductor is the product of El Sistema in Venezuela, where he was music director of the Simón Bolívar national youth orchestra in Caracas. Gustavo Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela (all grown up without “Youth” in their title) quickly sold out two nights at the Royal Festival Hall in the Southbank Centre. We were engaged to provide remote control camera footage for live streams to both to the Guardian website and to the cinema screen elsewhere in the venue. Footage was also used by the orchestra and a section featuring a surprise encore from Bryn Terfel was used on BBC’s Newsnight. They featured Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Third Symphony, Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Strauss’s mighty Eine Alpinesinfonie and Benzecry’s Amerindian Rituals. Interview with Gustavo Dudamel about El Sistema. As principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony, Dudamel opened the door to starting up the renowned Venezuelan musical education programme El Sistema in Sweden. The world-famous conductor is the product of El Sistema in Venezuela, where he was music director of the Simón Bolívar national youth orchestra in Caracas. His message is that music must reach out to all citizens, to all children, as a basic human right. Music makes us grow as human beings. With Gustavo Dudamel at the forefront, El Sistema in Sweden adopted the Venezuelan model of training orchestras and choirs: music as a tool for building community.
