“Los delirios de Rosita” (from "Danzas Cubanas") by Ignacio Cervantes
Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905), born in Havana, was a pianist and composer who created a significant style of Cuban music that delightfully blended the country’s diverse cultures, rhythms and melodies. A child prodigy, he was taught by Cuban pianists as well as the American composer-pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk during his visit to Cuba. Gottschalk encouraged the young pianist to study at the Conservatoire de Paris, and he did (1866-70), receiving first prizes in composition and harmony. In 1875, Cervantes left Cuba when the government discovered that he and compatriot violinist José White Lafitte had been performing concerts throughout Cuba to raise funds for the rebels engaged in the Ten Years’ War (1868-78), the first of three wars that ended in 1898 with Cuba’s independence from Spain. Cervantes composed one opera, several chamber pieces, zarzuelas, and more than 40 “Danzas Cubanas” - each of them a little slice of happiness.
My pianist friend Mauro Ledesma says, “I like his dances because when you play and hear them you are compelled to dance, even if only your head is moving. They are so much fun to play. You can almost sense the aroma of Cuba in them.”

Cervantes (film)
Cervantes is a highly fictionalized 1967 film biography of the early life of Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616). It was the first screen biography of the author. Directed by Vincent Sherman, and filmed in color, it stars Horst Buchholz as Cervantes, Gina Lollobrigida as a prostitute with whom he becomes involved, José Ferrer as Hassan Bey, the Turk who held Cervantes in captivity, Louis Jourdan as Cardinal Giulio Acquaviva, and Fernando Rey as King Philip II. Filming began in 1966 and the movie was released in several countries between 1967-1969. Released in the U.S. as a B-movie, and retitled The Young Rebel, the film went nearly unnoticed at the box office and did not do well critically.

“Los delirios de Rosita” (from "Danzas Cubanas") by Ignacio Cervantes
Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905), born in Havana, was a pianist and composer who created a significant style of Cuban music that delightfully blended the country’s diverse cultures, rhythms and melodies. A child prodigy, he was taught by Cuban pianists as well as the American composer-pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk during his visit to Cuba. Gottschalk encouraged the young pianist to study at the Conservatoire de Paris, and he did (1866-70), receiving first prizes in composition and harmony. In 1875, Cervantes left Cuba when the government discovered that he and compatriot violinist José White Lafitte had been performing concerts throughout Cuba to raise funds for the rebels engaged in the Ten Years’ War (1868-78), the first of three wars that ended in 1898 with Cuba’s independence from Spain. Cervantes composed one opera, several chamber pieces, zarzuelas, and more than 40 “Danzas Cubanas” - each of them a little slice of happiness.
My pianist friend Mauro Ledesma says, “I like his dances because when you play and hear them you are compelled to dance, even if only your head is moving. They are so much fun to play. You can almost sense the aroma of Cuba in them.”
