Observation is the active acquisition of information from a primary source. In living beings, observation employs the senses. In science, observation can also involve the recording of data via the use of instruments. The term may also refer to any data collected during the scientific activity. Observations can be qualitative, that is, only the absence or presence of a property is noted, or quantitative if a numerical value is attached to the observed phenomenon by counting or measuring.
The scientific method requires observations of nature to formulate and test hypotheses. It consists of these steps:
Sherlock Holmes (/ˈʃɜːrlɒk ˈhoʊmz/) is a fictional character created by British author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A London-based "consulting detective" whose abilities border on the fantastic, Holmes is known for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to adopt almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science to solve difficult cases. The character first appeared in print in 1887, and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories by Conan Doyle, as well as later works by other authors. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character's popularity grew with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891; additional short-story series and two novels (published in serial form) appeared from then to 1927. The events in the stories take place from about 1880 to 1914.
All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson. Two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" and "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane"), and two others are written in the third person ("The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" and "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the story from memory, with Watson narrating the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, include long passages of omniscient narrative of events unknown to either Holmes or Watson.
Participant observation is one type of data collection method typically done in the qualitative research paradigm. It is a widely used methodology in many disciplines, particularly cultural anthropology and (European) ethnology, less so in sociology, communication studies, human geography and social psychology. Its aim is to gain a close and intimate familiarity with a given group of individuals (such as a religious, occupational, sub cultural group, or a particular community) and their practices through an intensive involvement with people in their cultural environment, usually over an extended period of time. The method originated in the field research of social anthropologists, especially Bronisław Malinowski in Britain, the students of Franz Boas in the United States, and in the later urban research of the Chicago School of sociology.

You will learn how to observe and think like Sherlock Holmes using 5 observation techniques used by the character in the movies and books. So many people spend their days wondering what others think of them, if they will mess up in a conversation, or how they look. If you’re actually trying to increase your observation skills, spend your energy and focus on others, not just yourself. To become a better observer, you must put away distractions. How can you notice subtle changes in body language or the size of someone’s pupils if your phone has all your attention? Just take and turn on one of those foreign films, but don’t watch it for the storyline. Instead, pay super close attention to the body language of the characters. Sherlock Holmes is great at deciphering other languages using just b...

In my two videos, I am looking at the theme of observation and identity through a camera mounted like a static CCTV camera and a video that has been cut up and put together to create a narrative. To arrive at this idea of observation, I looked at how we all like to observe each other and create our own stories as to what people are doing. We often don't know these people but we are curious by nature and like to jump to conclusions about people's actions. The first video is set up in a similar way to a CCTV camera and is a recording of the high street in Chester from above. In this video, the viewer is encouraged to look at what is happening in the high street, and start to form a narrative in their own mind as to what is happening, this may differ greatly from viewer to viewer, or coul...

When it comes to drawing complicated subjects, you need focus, patience and the basics of observation drawing. All three are equally important.
