Light combat aircraft Tejas on Friday “successfully” test fired an air-to-air missile, paving the way for powering the indigenously-built aircraft with missiles having beyond visual range capabilities (BVR).
The test-firing was conducted on a manoeuvrable aerial target at the interim test range in Chandipur in Odisha.
The defence ministry said the objective of the test was to assess integration of the Derby BVR missile with avionics, fire-control radar, launchers and missile weapon delivery system of Tejas.
“The flawless launch was demonstrated with all on-board systems performing satisfactorily and the missile scored a direct hit on the target with complete destruction of it.
“The test firing achieved all its planned objectives. The Derby firing is a major step towards clearing BVR capabilities on light combat aircraft for FOC (final operational clearance),” it said in a statement.
The sensors at the interim test range tracked the target and the missile.
“The missile launch was performed in lock on after launch mode for a BVR target in the look down mode and the target was destroyed,” the statement by the ministry said.

The squadron, presently in Bengaluru, has only two aircraft (Tejas-SP3, SP4) and it will be a year before it moves to its designated squadron headquarters in Sulur, Tamil Nadu.
The maiden flights of SP3 and SP4 happened on September 1, 2016 and March 2, 2016, respectively and Team LCA has been working overtime, including on Sundays and festival days to deliver the SP6 at the earliest. From the first flight of SP4 in March this year, the team has completed production and the first flight of SP6 in just about 4 months.

The LCA Tejas is an Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multi-role light fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force and Navy. The aircraft has a tail-less compound delta-wing configuration, which provides for high maneuverability.
It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s to replace India's ageing MiG-21 fighters. The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after the HAL HF-24 Marut.
The LCA Tejas, as is the case with all major defence research and development projects, is a mind-boggling case study of delays, slippages, compromise and mismanagement that continues till date.
And so, in this Video, we will look at Tejas's 33 year long timeline, to see if India did actually develop an Aircraft it aimed to develop in the first place, or was it a failure?

When LCA Tejas will Get Final FOC From Indian Airforce and it's enhancement
The current version of tejas being produced are currently of the IOC 2 version.
The requirements for FOC are as follows:
Firing of guided missile(BVRAAM) in its guided mode.
In flight refuelling.
Gun firing while in flight.
Progress so far on above criterions:
1.Firing of guided missile in its guided mode: Completed successfully last week by firing derby BVRAAM. It secured a direct hit. In the pic left wing has the derby. This is the pic just before the test.
2. In flight refuelling: The IFR probe has been integrated on LSP-8 in january this year. All the syncronisation of the probe with a/c structure been done. Main test can be done any time.
3.Gun firing trials: The integration of the gun is done and its syncronisation and ground test has been successfully done. Main test is yet to be done.
Officially, there is no specific given time or month with FOC. But officially both HAL and DRDO and ADA chief has said it is expectes “anytime this year”. The successfull firing of BVRAAM was the initialisation of the FOC process, hence it can be inferred that the FOC has begun and will be completed any time this year. but I think FOC process will compleated between 6 to 9 Months.

The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) - Tejas SP-6 completed its maiden flight from HAL Airport in Bangalore on Friday, 30th June 2017 with Gp. Capt. K K Venugopal (Retd) on the controls. SP-6 will be the fifth member of the First Squadron of LCA Tejas. SP-5 will be next in line and will also be making its first flight soon.
LCA Tejas was inducted into No. 45 Squadron of Indian Air Force (IAF) on 01 Jul 2016, also called the "Flying Daggers" marking the first anniversary on 1st July 2017.
Tejas has a pure double delta wing configuration (wing root leading edge sweep 50°, outer wing leading edge sweep 62.5° and trailing edge forward sweep 4°), with no tailplanes or canard, and a single dorsal fin. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, composite material structures, and a flat rated engine. It is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary supersonic combat aircraft.
The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after the HAL HF-24 Marut. As of 2016 the Tejas MK1 was in production for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the naval version was undergoing flight tests for Indian Navy (IN). The projected requirement for IAF is 200 single-seat fighters and 20 twin-seat trainers, while the IN expects to operate 40 single-seat fighters. The first Tejas IAF unit, No. 45 Squadron IAF Flying Daggers was formed on 1 July 2016 with two aircraft. Initially being stationed at Bangalore, the first squadron will be placed at its home base at Sulur, Tamil Nadu

Light combat aircraft
A Light combat aircraft is a light multirole military aircraft most coming from advanced trainers that have been modified or designed for engaging in light combat missions, either in light strike or attack missions, reconnaissance or interdiction roles while some keeping its trainer role. They are also slower than their bigger counterparts capable only of subsonic speed though some are capable of reaching mach 1+. Although equipped with either guns or short range air-to-air missiles it is usually for self defense purpose or anti-helicopter missions not for air defense as lightweight fighters do, though some are capable of air combat missions due to integrated or have variants capable of carrying powerful multi-mode radar systems, most LCAs don't have such due to their small limited design or are less powerful. However they can still be used to patrol the skies and implement border patrol or air policing. These aircraft are usually smaller and more lightly armed than the bigger multirole or strike aircraft such as the American F-18, F-15E Strike Eagle or Russian Mig-29. Most LCAs are armed with either bombs, rockets or gun pods used for COIN or CAS missions. Some aircraft have been developed to integrate more advanced armaments such as smart bombs and air to ground missiles and electronic targeting systems for better mission capability.

Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force (IAF; Devanāgarī: भारतीय वायु सेना, Bharatiya Vāyu Senā) is the air arm of the Indian armed forces. It is the World's 4th largest airforce. Its primary responsibility is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during a conflict. Breaking News: Tejas SP-6 Completes maiden Flight, SP-5 Lined Up for Next Month
The squadron, presently in Bengaluru, has only two aircraft (Tejas-SP3, SP4) and it will be a year before it moves to its designated squadron headquarters in Sulur, Tamil Nadu. The maiden flights of SP3 and SP4 happened on September 1, 2016 and March 2, 2016, respectively and Team LCA has been working overtime, including on Sundays and festival days to deliver the SP6 at the earliest. The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) - Tejas SP-6 completed its maiden flight from HAL Airport in Bangalore on Friday, 30th June 2017 with Gp. Capt. K K Venugopal (Retd) on the controls. Light combat aircraft Tejas on Friday “successfully” test fired an air-to-air missile, paving the way for powering the indigenously-built aircraft with missiles having beyond visual range capabilities (BVR).
The test-firing was conducted on a manoeuvrable aerial target at the interim test range in Chandipur in Odisha.
The defence ministry said the objective of the test was to assess integration of the Derby BVR missile with avionics, fire-control radar, launchers and missile weapon delivery system of Tejas.
“The flawless launch was demonstrated with all on-board systems performing satisfactorily and the missile scored a direct hit on the target with complete destruction of it.
“The test firing achieved all its planned objectives. The Derby firing is a major step towards clearing BVR capabilities on light combat aircraft for FOC (final operational clearance),” it said in a statement.
The sensors at the interim test range tracked the target and the missile.
“The missile launch was performed in lock on after launch mode for a BVR target in the look down mode and the target was destroyed,” the statement by the ministry said.

Tejas has a pure double delta wing configuration (wing root leading edge sweep 50°, outer wing leading edge sweep 62.5° and trailing edge forward sweep 4°), with no tailplanes or canard, and a single dorsal fin. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, composite material structures, and a flat rated engine. It is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary supersonic combat aircraft.
The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after the HAL HF-24 Marut. As of 2016 the Tejas MK1 was in production for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the naval version was undergoing flight tests for Indian Navy (IN). The projected requirement for IAF is 200 single-seat fighters and 20 twin-seat trainers, while the IN expects to operate 40 single-seat fighters. The first Tejas IAF unit, No. 45 Squadron IAF Flying Daggers was formed on 1 July 2016 with two aircraft. Initially being stationed at Bangalore, the first squadron will be placed at its home base at Sulur, Tamil Nadu

The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) - Tejas SP-6 completed its maiden flight from HAL Airport in Bangalore on Friday, 30th June 2017 with Gp. Capt. K K Venugopal (Retd) on the controls. SP-6 will be the fifth member of the First Squadron of LCA Tejas. SP-5 will be next in line and will also be making its first flight soon.
LCA Tejas was inducted into No. 45 Squadron of Indian Air Force (IAF) on 01 Jul 2016, also called the "Flying Daggers" marking the first anniversary on 1st July 2017.
