Shillong (English pronunciation: /ʃɪˈlɔːŋ/;Khasi: Shillong) is the capital and hill station of Meghalaya, also known as "The Abode of Clouds", one of the smallest states in India. It is the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills district and is situated at an average altitude of 4,908 feet (1,496 m) above sea level, with the highest point being Shillong Peak at 6,449 feet (1,966 m). Shillong is the 330th most populous city in India with population of 143,007 according to the 2011 census. It is said that the rolling hills around the town reminded the European settlers of Scotland. Hence, they would also refer to it as the "Scotland of the East". The population density of the state of Meghalaya in the 2000s was 342 people per sq mile.
Shillong has steadily grown in size since it was made the civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in 1864 by the British. In 1874, on the formation of Assam as the Chief Commissioner's Province, it was chosen as the headquarters of the new administration because of its convenient location between the Brahmaputra and Surma valleys and more so because the climate of Shillong was much cooler than tropical India. Shillong remained the capital of undivided Assam until the creation of the new state of Meghalaya on 21 January 1972, when Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya, and Assam moved its capital to Dispur in Guwahati.
The points of the compass are points on a compass, specifically on the compass rose, marking divisions of the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. The number of points may be only the 4 cardinal points, or the 8 principal points adding the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). In meteorological usage further intermediate points are added to give the sixteen points of a wind compass. Finally, at the most complete in European tradition, are found the full thirty-two points of the mariner's compass. In ancient China 24 points of the compass were used.
In the mariner's exercise of boxing the compass, all thirty-two points of the compass are named in clockwise order. The names of intermediate points are formed by the initials of the cardinal directions and their intermediate ordinal directions, and are very handy to refer to a heading (or course or azimuth) in a general or colloquial fashion, without having to resort to computing or recalling degrees. For most applications, the minor points have been superseded by degrees measured clockwise from North.

Vegetarians beware: We tasted the unusual and wonderful non-veg food of the North East. Shillong is a popular tourist spot, and yet, you don't find a lot of people talking about the food in the city. We joined D-bok and Big-Ri, members of local rap crew Khasi Bloodz on a gastronomical journey looking for the best local fare - Jadoh (blood rice), Doh Thad (dried meat) and Doh Snam (blood sausages). Jadoh is one of Shillong's specialities - rice cooked in a very special ingredient: chicken blood. The next item on the menu: doh thad, or dried meat. This dish is prepared by smoking dried pork or beef over a fire. To round up this unusual meal, the rappers introduced us to doh snam or blood sausages: pork intestines seasoned in blood. Shillong has been called as the 'Scotland of the East'. This is because of its aesthetic, graceful and picturesque landscapes. The city is bestowed with some quintessential sightseeing facilities like the Ward Lake or the Botanical Garden. But what holds attention of the tourists are the waterfalls in and around Shillong. Among them the Elephant Falls of Meghalaya holds the prime attention. Here we present to you top 10 places to visit in Shillong. 1) Elephant Falls It is a combination of 3 rivers. One of the British officers named it as Elephant falls after they saw a rock which resembled as an elephant. The falls are surrounded with green vegetation that provides a perfect backdrop. 2) The Don Bosco Museum It is part of DBCIC (Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures). DB...
I travelled to the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya back in 2012. At that time, it was monsoon and here I was in wettest region on the earth. It was a world completely different from the one I live in. Not only was it green all around but there was also an exemplary amalgamation of the true beauty that nature has to offer and human lives. I then knew that I will come back and keep coming back here. Last month, I got a chance to go there again and live a few days in some of the most remote places within the Khasi Hills. When you are out there in the open, the rulebook of society becomes irrelevant and you inch closer to self discovery. Meghalaya Alive! Places covered in the film are: Mawlynnong, Mawlyngbna, Lawbah, Nowhet, Dawki, Shiliang Jashier, Lyngkhet, Shnogpdeng. Some specific spots that...
This film is of Shillong where I spent my days in school. I got a chance to visit the city after a long ten years and I was amazed to see so much changes here. Though the city has gone a complete makeover over the years yet some of the places are still the same. It was quite an experience walking through the streets again.
