Ernesto Antonio "Tito" Puente (April 20, 1923 – June 1, 2000) was an American mambo musician and Latin jazz composer. The son of native Puerto Ricans Ernest and Ercilia Puente, living in New York City's Spanish Harlem community, Puente is often credited as "The Musical Pope", "El Rey de los Timbales" (The King of the Timbales) and "The King of Latin Music". He is best known for dance-oriented mambo and Latin jazz compositions that endured over a 50-year career. He and his music appear in many films such as The Mambo Kings and Fernando Trueba's Calle 54. He guest-starred on several television shows including Sesame Street and The Simpsons two-part episode "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"
Tito Puente was born on April 20, 1923, at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City. His family moved frequently, but he spent the majority of his childhood in the Spanish Harlem area of the city. Puente's father was the foreman at a razorblade factory.
As a child, he was described as hyperactive, and after neighbors complained of hearing seven-year-old Puente beating on pots and window frames, his mother sent him to 25-cent piano lessons. By the age of 10, he switched to percussion, drawing influence from jazz drummer Gene Krupa. He later created a song-and-dance duo with his sister Anna in the 1930s and intended to become a dancer, but an ankle tendon injury prevented him pursuing dance as a career. When the drummer in Machito's band was drafted to the army, Puente subsequently took his place.
India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.
Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Linda Viera Caballero (born March 9, 1969), better known as India and La Princesa de la Salsa ("The Princess of Salsa"), is a singer-songwriter of salsa and house music. She has been nominated for both Grammy and Latin Grammy awards.
Caballero was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Her parents moved to New York City soon after her birth, and settled down in the South Bronx area of the city. They moved in with Caballero's grandmother, a woman who served as an important influence on Caballero's life. Her stage name, India, was given to Caballero by her grandmother because of her dark features and long straight black hair.
In 1985, when Caballero was 14 years old, she was a founding member of the Latin freestyle group TKA and was featured on the cover of TKA's second single, "Come Get My Love". She left shortly thereafter.
Caballero signed a record contract with Reprise/Warner Bros. Records, which planned on marketing her as the Latin version of Madonna (who recorded for sister label Sire Records). After recording the album Breaking Night, Caballero decided that she didn't want to take that route in her career.

Finding Carlton is documentary film about the story of jazz in India. Through the portraits of a few remaining survivors, it tells the unknown and mesmerizing story of a bygone age of jazz in India. Through archival material and poignant encounters with a maverick bebop guitarist, jazz fans , and other artists, the film uncovers an untold story of cultural cross-pollination: born of pre-war African-American diaspora, American Army presence in Calcutta during the Second World War; and of US State Department sponsored jazz tours in India. The film also illuminates the influence of American jazz on Bollywood. Artfully edited in a rhythmic, multi-layered, warmly intimate and affectionate style, Finding Carlton revives the intense power of a largely undocumented jazz movement, weaving memory, c...
Kolkata was once the hotbed of jazz in India. That era may fade away with the passing of this legendary musician. Carlton Kitto has played with Jazz legends like Sonny Rollins, Charlie Byrd, Chico Freeman, Pam Crain, Braz Gonzalves, Louiz Banks and Pandit Ravishankar. Some say there's no one on the Indian subcontinent with as much knowledge about jazz and music as Carlton Kitto. But today, one of the last in the old guard of jazz in India has moved on. We were lucky enough to interview him just before his tragic death, talking to him about the glory days of jazz in Kolkata and in India. 101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win...

By virtue of his warm, flamboyant stage manner, longevity, constant touring, and appearances in the mass media, Tito Puente is probably the most beloved symbol of Latin jazz. But more than that, Puente managed to keep his music remarkably fresh over the decades; as a timbales virtuoso, he combined mastery over every rhythmic nuance with old-fashioned showmanship -- watching his eyes bug out when taking a dynamic solo was one of the great treats for Latin jazz fans. A trained musician, he was also a fine, lyrical vibraphonist, a gifted arranger, and played piano, congas, bongos, and saxophone. His appeal continues to cut across all ages and ethnic groups, helped no doubt by Santana's best-selling cover versions of "Oye Como Va" and "Para Los Rumberos" in 1970-1971, and cameo appearances on ...

Tito Puente was profiled in this April 1992 television segment while in Washington DC for "Global Rhythm," a week-long Latin-jazz arts-education symposium and concert, also featuring jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis, flautist Nestor Torres, and trumpeter Doc Cheatham. Co-presented by the George Washington University and Charlin Jazz Society, "Global Rhythm" was conceived and co-produced for the latter organization by then-24 year old producer Jim Byers, now the 18 year host of the archival Latin-jazz radio show, "The Latin Flavor Classic Edition" on WPFW 89.3 FM (Sun, 6-8 p.m.), live-streaming on www.wpfwfm.org. Designed to explore the 'urban-intersection' of cultures embodied by Latin-jazz, several of the "Global Rhythm" activities are chronicled in this piece. The opening outdoor shots were t...

This is one of the best live videos I have ever seen to date. There are no words to describe the musicianship on these songs. Read on... Remember Shakti is a quintet which combines elements of traditional Indian music with elements of jazz. The band consists of English guitarist John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain (tabla), U. Srinivas (mandolin), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), and V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam), who are all of Indian descent. The band's name is derived from John Mclaughlin's acoustic Indian fusion band Shakti which was active in the 1970s. Uploaded by Manohar Tejomurtula

The latest episode on #LifeIsMusic takes you on a tour through time. Titled 'Timeless', the track has been composed by the Godfather of Jazz in India, Louiz Banks, who takes inspiration from the sun, the wind, and the flowing river to create this mesmerizing piece. Louiz Banks and his son, popular drummer Gino Banks share a musical camaraderie and Louiz Banks admits that he learns everytime he plays with Gino, and re-invents himself each time. Timeless has a distinct flavor to it, spiced up by the Indian Classical touch that Sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee brings to it through his Sitar riff. Ace Percussionist Taufiq Qureshi adds sheer brilliance on Bongos and Cajón in the track. The musicians also add that Timeless is like Detour, but a detour by plane. Enjoy this light Jazz number that slow...

Blues At Midnight All copyrights belong to I don't know who right now (Impulse! ?, Saturn ? ...), so let's say it belong to Sun Ra. Here's another very special one. Jazz In Silhouette is a jazz album recorded in 1958. Sun Ra is one of the biggest geniuses in the history of music and he proves that he can be very orthodox in his early career (eventhough there are good signs of his future crazy revolutionnary cosmic style). One of his best albums for sure. My personal favourite track is Ancient Aethiopia, atmosphere and percussions are all I love in that kind of music.
