Aleppo

Aleppo (/əˈlɛpoʊ/; Arabic: ﺣﻠﺐ‎ / ALA-LC: Ḥalab, IPA: [ˈħalab]) is the largest city in Syria and it serves as the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2,132,100 (2004 census), it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant. For centuries, Aleppo was the Syrian region's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third-largest, after Constantinople and Cairo.

Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC. Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC; and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency. Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia (i.e. modern Iraq).

Syria (ⁱ/ˈsɪ.rɪə/; Arabic: سوريا‎ or سورية, Sūriyā or Sūrīyah), officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia. De jure Syrian territory borders Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest, but the government's control now extends to approximately 30–40% of the de jure state area and less than 60% of the population.

A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians,Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunnis, Christians, Alawites, Druze, Mandeans, Shiites, Salafis, and Yazidis. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.

In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham), while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.

Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة‎ al-ǧazīrah IPA: [æl dʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Peninsula", referring to the Arabian Peninsula), also known as JSC (Jazeera Satellite Channel), is a Doha-based state-funded broadcaster owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which is partly funded by the House of Thani, the ruling family of Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages.

Al Jazeera is among the largest news organizations with 80 bureaus around the world. Al Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar. While Al Jazeera officials have stated that they are editorially independent from the government of Qatar, this assertion has been disputed.

The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The station gained worldwide attention following the outbreak of war in Afghanistan, when it was the only channel to cover the war live, from its office there.

Ancient Siam

Ancient Siam (also known as Ancient City)(Thai: เมืองโบราณ, Mueang Boran) is a park constructed under the patronage of Lek Viriyaphant and spreading over 200 acres (0.81 km²) in the shape of Thailand.

The founder's original idea was to create a golf course with miniatures of Thailand's historically significant structures spread around the course. During his research he found most structures being severely damaged over time and decided instead of creating new miniatures to save the original structures when possible or re-creating them full size or scaled down.

Ancient Siam is dubbed as the world's largest outdoor museum. Situated close to the Crocodile Farm in Samut Prakan province, the 320-hectare city features 116 structures of Thailand's famous monuments and architectural attractions. The grounds of Ancient Siam correspond roughly to the shape of the Kingdom, with each of the monuments lying at their correct places geographically. Some of the buildings are life-size replicas of existing or former sites, while others are scaled down.

The aim of the offensive was to establish a new supply line into Aleppo city, after an Army-initiated summer campaign had cut off all rebel access to Aleppo. The aim of the offensive was to establish a new supply line into Aleppo city, after an Army-initiated summer campaign had cut off all rebel access to Aleppo. By 31 October, the rebel offensive had slowed due to heavy government resistance and pro-government forces had taken the initiative. Three days into the offensive, the rebels were in control of the Minyan Industrial district, most of the Dahiyat Al-Assad district and half of the Minyan residential district. The frontline had stabilized. On 3 November, the rebels launched the second phase of their offensive against Army positions in the western part of the New Aleppo district and at the Minyan district, in an attempt to revitalize the operation since it had made little progress after the first day. They managed to advance and capture several positions. The rebels also assaulted the 3000 Housing Project and the Al-Assad Military Academy. During the clashes, another rebel tank was destroyed, as well as two Army anti-tank positions. Still, the rebels were not able to break into New Aleppo and their assault was repelled. On 6 November, Army special forces and Hezbollah militiamen launched a counter-attack on the southwestern edge of Aleppo, advancing in the area of Al-Mutha hill and the 1070 Housing Project. The next day, government forces broke through the rebel's first line of defense on Tal Rakhem hill, making advances, while also seizing six buildings in the 1070 Housing Project. Later that day, government forces further advanced in the area and managed to impose fire control over the nearby al-Hikmah school. On 8 November, government troops fully captured the 1070 Housing Project, as well as three nearby hills. The rebels additionally withdrew from al-Hikmah school, so to regroup at the Rashiddeen 5 Suburb, but the Army had not yet reached the school due to heavy rebel shelling. Later, government troops launched a large assault inside the Dahiyat Al-Assad and Minyan districts, recapturing Minyan and reportedly advancing inside Dahiyat Al-Assad. That night, the rebels managed to recapture the western half of Minyan. The next day, government troops seized the strategic Hikmah school and secured the Hikmah area, while they made their first push towards the Rashiddeen 5 and Aqrab districts in southwest Aleppo. Later, government troops made their first assault against the Rashiddeen 5 and Aqrab districts in soutmy took control of a large part of Dahiyat Al-Assad. Death of Aleppo Al Jazeera World follows the everyday lives of Aleppo residents living amid the ongoing conflict and destruction. The historic city of Aleppo, Syria's oldest and largest, dates back to the sixth century BC. It was a major trading hub during the Ottoman Empire, its architecture impressive and its culture vibrant and diverse. The old city, with its medieval mansions, alleyways and souqs, was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. But the "Battle of Aleppo" that began in July 2012 between Syrian government forces and rebel factions and the ongoing conflict have devastated the once beautiful city. For the people of Aleppo who continue to live in the city's opposition-held areas, attacks and bombardment are a daily reality. In late 2014 and early 2015, a group of Syrian filmmakers (whose names cannot be revealed for safety reasons) travelled to Aleppo amid the continued bombing, to meet rebel fighters, ordinary citizens, families and children who struggle to survive as their city crumbles around them. As Syria's civil war enters its fifth year, this poignant and vivid film captures the personal stories of those living in the prolonged conflict. The filmmakers shot in several locations in the city and sometimes used drone footage to show the destruction from above. We meet residents of Aleppo who take us through empty, rubble-filled lanes and the decimated and burnt-out buildings that once housed families and businesses, as they compare life before the war with the present. "The government has systematically ruined this city," Mohammad Mahmoud, a researcher, says in the film. "It wants to destroy the revolution and erase everything. It's the same as what happened in the city of Hama in 1982. It wants to kill the spirit of Aleppo's people." We also meet Karam al-Masri, a photographer who was captured by ISIL, tortured and held for six months at the start of the war. Al-Masri has used his camera to chronicle the destruction of Aleppo and plight of the people who continue to live there. "A camera's role is greater than a weapon's," says al-Masri. "When the regime arrests someone who works in the media, they torture them more than they would an FSA (Free Syrian Army) member." There is Michel Abou Yousef who is the supervisor at a Christian home for the elderly where he has lived since losing his own home. "I'm 53 years old and have seen enough," he says. "I don't want to reach 60 and see worse than this." Ismail is a civil defense volunteer who works with others to protect Aleppo's women and children. "For me this is not a job," he says. "It's how I take part in the revolution." Shihab Al Din Abou Baker is a school teacher who works in a makeshift classroom, teaching dozens of local children who have been traumised by the violence. There is Muhammad Hubbo, a schoolboy who has lost his friends and his house. He often has to do without electricity and water - and his favourite game is playing street skittles with his friends using spent gun cartridges. Mohammed al-Goul is an FSA member who takes us to the deserted neighbourhood where he grew up. It was "one of the oldest and most beautiful in Aleppo," he says. Stopping by the house where he was born, he reminisces about what it was like when he was a child but says he cannot step into the courtyard. "I can't go inside because of the pain and anger I feel," he says. Death of Aleppo is a film that captures the scale of human suffering and destruction in the historic city; but also the resilience of its citizens who battle daily as their city falls apart all around them. Update: After this film was made, Michel Abou Yousef died in an attack on the city on April 11, 2015. Over the last six months the FSA and the battle for Aleppo has transitioned from a full-on frontline assault into a slow-paced but still deadly sniper war.
