Northern Thailand is geographically characterised by several mountain ranges, which continue from the Shan Hills in bordering Myanmar and Laos, and the river valleys which cut through them. Though like most of Thailand, it has a tropical savanna climate, its relatively high elevation and latitude contribute to more pronounced seasonal temperature variation, with cooler winters than the other regions. Historically it is related to the Lanna Kingdom and its culture.
North Thailand is bound by the Salween River in the west and the Mekong in the east. The basins of rivers Ping, Wang, Yom, and Nan, all tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, in the central part run from north to south and are mostly very wide. The basins cut across the mountains of two great ranges, the Thanon Range in the western part and the Phi Pan Nam in the eastern. Their elevations are generally moderate, a little above 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) for the highest summits. Although formerly forested, many of these mountains are now denuded.
Mueang Chiang Rai (Thai: เมืองเชียงราย, pronounced [mɯəŋ tɕʰiəŋ raːj]; Lanna:ᩮᨾᩥᩬᨦᨩ᩠ᨿᨦᩁᩣ᩠ᨿ: Mueang Chiang Hai; Lao: Mueang Xieng Hai) is a city in Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai Province. Chiang Rai is the northernmost large city in Thailand. It was established as a capital city in the reign of King Mangrai, in 1262 CE.
The city was founded by King Mangrai in 1262 and became the capital of the Mangrai Dynasty. Subsequently, Chiang Rai was conquered by Burma and remained under Burmese rule for several hundred years. It was not until 1786 that Chiang Rai became a Chiang Mai vassal. Siam (Thailand) annexed Chiang Mai in 1899, and Chiang Rai was proclaimed a province of Thailand in 1933.
In 1432, during the reign of King Sam Fang Kaen of the Mangrai Dynasty (1402–1441), the Phra Kaeo, or Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha statue, was discovered in Chiang Rai when an earthquake split the chedi at Wat Phra Kaeo of Chiang Rai city. The beautiful jade figure was then seen concealed within. Another telling of the story has the "Emerald Buddha" hastily covered in mud just before marauders entered to pillage. Many years later, the clunky-looking mud Buddha was found to actually house a magnificent jade statue, perhaps by way of the earthquake mentioned above—which caused a piece of the clay to break off—revealing the jade beneath.

It is bordered to the north by Myanmar and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and the southern extremity of Myanmar. Its maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast, and Indonesia and India on the Andaman Sea to the southwest.

Chiang Mai (/ˈtʃjɑːŋˈmaɪ/, from Thai: เชียงใหม่ [tɕʰiəŋ màj], Lanna:ᨩ᩠ᨿᨦᩉ᩠ᨾᩲ᩵ [t͡ɕīaŋ.màj]) sometimes written as "Chiengmai" or "Chiangmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand. It is the capital of Chiang Mai Province and was a former capital of the Kingdom of Lan Na (1296–1768), which became a tributary state of the Kingdom of Chiang Mai from 1774 to 1939. It is 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok and is situated amongst the highest mountains in the country. The city sits astride the Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River.
Chiang Mai means "new city" and was so named because it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom when it was founded in 1296, succeeding Chiang Rai, the former capital founded in 1262.
Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded between the ASEAN nations and the "+3" countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai was one of three Thai cities contending for Thailand's bid to host the World Expo 2020 (the others were Chonburi and Ayutthaya). Ayutthaya, however, was the city ultimately chosen by the Thai Parliament to register for the international competition.
Mae Hong Son (Thai: แม่ฮ่องสอน (Pronunciation)) is a town (thesaban mueang) in north-west Thailand, capital of Mae Hong Son Province. It is in the Shan Hills, near the border with Burma along the banks of the River Pai. As of 2005, the town had some 6,023 inhabitants. The town covers the tambon Chong Kham of the Mueang Mae Hong Son district. Mae Hong Son is 883 km north of Bangkok and 251 km north-west of Chiang Mai.
The territory of Mae Hong Son Province was formerly part of Mawkmai State, one of the Shan States which had been founded in 1767 by Hsai Khiao, hailing from a noble family of Chiang Mai.
As a result of the Anglo-Siamese Boundary Commission of 1892-93 Mae Hong Son district was ceded to Siam, but the adjacent Möngmaü and Mehsakun trans-Salween districts— also claimed by Siam as territories located on the eastern side of the Salween River— were kept as part of British Burma.
Mae Hong Son has a tropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classification Aw). Winters are dry and warm. Temperatures rise until April, which is very hot with the average daily maximum at 38.7 °C (101.7 °F). The monsoon season runs from May through October, with heavy rain and somewhat cooler temperatures during the day, although nights remain warm.

Chiang Rai (เมืองเชียงราย) is a city in northern Thailand that I’ve always wanted to visit, and finally I had a chance to go. Keep watching this video for all the details. From Bangkok, I first bought a plane ticket with Bangkok Airways - it was also my first time to fly with Bangkok Airways, though I had heard good things about them before. Our flight was in the morning so we took a taxi in Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi International Airport to catch our flight. After we checked it, we headed to our gate, and were greeted by a nice little display of snacks and coffee and tea - not bad for just a one hour flight that cost less than $50! After eating some banana chips and a few cheese sandwiches, our flight to Chiang Rai was ready to board. On the flight Bangkok Airways served us even more food....
As a vacation from our residence in Chiang Mai we decided to take a serpentine road trip to the hillside country town of Pai (ปาย) where relaxed, wandered around, enjoyed stunning scenery and visited a Hot Spring. As we crammed into a over-capacity white minivan we began our journey to Pai which included a staggering 746 turns / curves in the road. I'm not normally the type to get sick on the road; however, I started to feel nauseous from the trip, so I ended up popping a couple of gravol pills to settle my stomach down. A very exciting morning was spent visiting an area of Northern Thailand where the villages of 5 Hill Tribes have been established, essentially as a tourist attraction. The Tribes people have been provided with free housing, rice, education for their children and a means to generate income for their families and in return, profit is being generated for the landowners from the tourist dollar. In all honesty, only 1 or perhaps 2 of the Tribes hold any real intrigue for visitors to the Villages. The Long Neck people and the Big Ear people have modified their bodies so substantially, that it’s certainly worth the 300 baht entrance fee to go and have a look. Walk around to visit the other Tribes to see their costumes, but if you don’t expect too much you won’t leave disappointed. If you are...
Pai to Mae Hong Son, highway 1095 by motorbike. Mae Hong Son is a remote town in the mountains of northern Thailand on the border of Burma. You can ride from Pai to Mae Hong Son and back in a day, as we did, but be sure to get an early start to allow for stopping along the way and exploring Mae Hong Son when you arrive. The distance from Pai to Mae Hong Son is approximately 150km and takes about 3 hours by private vehicle, or 4 hours by minibus. Route 1095 is scenic, curvy and has only one gas station. If you're on a bike take advantage of filling up all the way in Pai, Mae Hong Son and the village town in between. On the way back to Pai, we were running on empty and having visions of pushing the bike through the hills at night when we finally made it to the village town in between... th...

Thailand village in Korat province on nothern Thailand. This is between Bangkok Pattaya and Udon Thani. A tour with thai village girl to her home in her country. This is true life in Thailand and village life. We traveled from Pattaya through Bangkok by bus and passed by many Thailand vilages along the road. After having breakfast at village house we went to trip around Pattaya girls country by motorbike. We stoped to watch how thai girls fishing and later went to thai restaurant. Near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, is a small village which is home to a group of people who call themselves Kayan Lahwi (though tour guides call them the Padaung.) They moved here after fleeing persecution in neighboring Myanmar/Burma. Denied formal refugee status and therefore the right to work in Thailand, they are allowed to remain here as a tourist attraction. Visits to the village are part of the standard tour packages offered to visitors to Chiang Mai, and many tourists choose to pay a visit to the 'Long Neck village,' and to have their photographs taken with the the exotic 'giraffe women' who live here. Tour guides don't mention the male members of the community, who weren't in evidence when I visited but presumably must be around here somewhere. Cultural education or human zo...

6 Things I’ve Learned from Traveling through Thailand 1. Researching common scams before getting to your destination. This was my first time travelling through a less wealthy nation and I was suprised about how much the locals were not giving genuine advice to tourists and directing people towards scams or terrible ideas.Pretty much any local (especially taxi cab and tuktuk drivers) that approaches you, you should proceed with extreme caution as it’s pretty likely that person is attempting to get money out of you. 2. Google will not solve everything in Asia.I was under the impression that Google Maps always had the best route to get to my next destination, when in reality there are a lot of things that Google didn’t know. Week 4 in Thailand with the kids starts with a open-air "aircut' for Lincoln, and a trip through the night market. We go to the Ginger Farm to learn about farming rice and maintaining chickens. The tour teaches about the farm, like a field trip. The kids ride a water buffalo, before we score tickets to the Elephant Nature Park, an ethical elephant interaction experience. We get up close and personal with these majestic animals and learn about how they have mistreated over the years.
