Description: On the Istrian peninsula in western Croatia, several varieties of two-part singing and playing in the Istrian scale are preserved by Croatian, Istro-Romanian and Italian communities. The style is characterized by vigorous, partly nasal singing. It involves a degree of variation and improvisation in both vocal parts but always ends with two performers singing in unison or an octave apart. Typical musical instruments are the ''sopele'' shawms, always played in a pair, bagpipes, flutes and the ''tambura'' lute. Several local sub-styles have developed their own characteristics. For example, in ''kanat,'' performed primarily by the Croatian population, the second voice is often exchanged for or doubled with a small sopele; in the widespread variant known as ''tarankanje,'' words are sometimes replaced with characteristic syllables (ta-na-na, ta-ra-ran, etc.) designed to imitate the sound of the flute. This tradition is still a part of everyday life and festive occasions, including wedding ceremonies, community and family gatherings and religious services. Its bearers, about a hundred outstanding singers and players and some ten craftspeople, have acquired their skills and knowledge from their elders. Nowadays they are often associated with organized amateur folklore groups, spread throughout the region.

The Slovenian-Croatian peninsula of Istria is one of Europe‘s oldest settlement areas, the Pearl Of Adria with an eventful history and much multicultural flair; a rich interface between both Mediterranean and mediaeval cultures. In Koper, Istria’s economic centre and most important harbour city, the Old Town can be entered through the last remaining twelve gates of the city’s former defensive wall. In its heyday the city boomed with wine, oil, salt and fish and many merchants and craftsmen from Italy settled there and the Palazzo Belgramoni Tacco became the region‘s museum. The mediaeval town of Piran is located on a narrow promontory that juts out into Piran Bay like the bow of a ship. On a cliff above the old town is the Sanct George Church, and a bell tower on the town’s fortified walls provides a splendid view of the mainland, a maze of roof tops and the main square. Travelling further south, Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula and City Hall reveals much of its history. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and palaces, squares and religious buildings were constructed. In the fertile countryside lies yet another Istrian gem, Hum, the ‘smallest town in the world’ with its well-preserved gate, cobblestones and single lane. Portorož is the only real resort on the Slovenian Riviera with several hotels lining its waterfront and since the Danube Monarchy it has been a fashionable meeting place of the elite of Central Europe. Istria is a beauty with many faces, a rediscovered Adria dream and an almost forgotten paradise.

About specific music in Northern Adriatic coast and Istrian peninsula in Croatia:
Folk singing and playing the „SOPELE", the ancient folk musical instrument of the Northern Adriatic coast and Istria in Croatia are very specific.
This music is one of the most arhaic genuine expressions in this part of Europe. It is based on the non-tempered tonal system, a sequence of six tones, interpositioned in such a way that no other tone can be placed between them. This is the basic difference when we compare it with tempered, diatonic system of music played in modern European and world music.
Therefore, we are dealing here with most ancient Croatian music system, not present in any other European music.
This genuine music expression, carried over from generation to generation, has been rooted in the essence of the people.
Melography (note writing) of the distinctive, genuine music has been made possible thanks to the great Croatian musicologist and composer Ivan Matetić Ronjgov (1880-1960), who has deciphered the patterns of popular singing in this area, has theoretically explained the essence of the music and has fixed the scale of hexacordic system of tight intervals , naming it later the „Istrian scale".
From sptember 2009, Istrian scale is on UNESCO`s Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Two-part singing and playing in the Istrian Scale is a complex style of folk music found even outside Istria and the Croatian Littoral, but it is most compactly preserved precisely in this area. Basically, two-part singing is based on non-tempered tone relations and a characteristic color of tone that is achieved in vocal music by powerful singing, partly through the nose.
There is often a degree of improvisation and variation during the performance in both voices, but endings in unison or in octave remain as a strict rule. This feature can be noticed in bugarenje sub-style, too, regardless of the fact that the lower voice drops additionally for a second or a diminished third.
Most of tone rows consist of four to six tones. Metro-rhythmical organization, formal structure and structure of the sung text range from simple to very complex patterns, and the relationship between music and lyrics is specific.

Istria
Istria (/ˈɪstriə/; Croatian, Slovene: Istra; Italian: Istria; Istriot: Eîstria; German: Istrien), formerly Histria (Latin), is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The peninsula is located at the head of the Adriatic between the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner Gulf. It is shared by three countries: Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy.
Geography
The geographical features of Istria include the Učka mountain ridge, which is the highest portion of the Ćićarija mountain range; the rivers Dragonja, Mirna, Pazinčica, and Raša; and the Lim bay and valley. Istria lies in three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. By far the largest portion (89%) lies in Croatia. "Croatian Istria" is divided into two counties, the larger being Istria County in western Croatia. Important towns in Istria County include Pula/Pola, Poreč/Parenzo, Rovinj//Rovigno, Pazin//Pisino, Labin/Albona, Umag/Umago, Motovun//Montona, Buzet/Pinguente, and Buje/Buie. Istrian scale
"Istrian scale" refers both to a "unique"musical scale and to the Istrian and Kvarnerian folk music genres which use the scale. It is named for the Istrian peninsula. Genres include kanat and tarankanje; techniques include nasal tone, variation and improvisation, and resolution to the unison or octave; and instruments include sopele shawms, bagpipes, flutes, and tambura lutes. It was first named by Ivan Matetić Ronjgov early in the twentieth century, assisting his study and notation of Croatian music.
Description
Non-equal-tempered, the scale could approximately be notated as: E-F-G-A♭-B♭-C♭ [hexatonic] (see: enharmonic), the first six notes of an octatonic scale on E. It may be thought of in various ways, such as the Gregorian Phrygian mode with lowered 4th, 5th, and 6th degrees (on E: E-F-G-A♭-B♭-C♭-D [heptatonic]). Performances feature diaphony and the Phrygian cadence (in E: F and D moving to E).
Though, "relative intonation var[ies] considerably from example to example [and between instruments]," the scale has also been described as derived from just intonation: subharmonics seven to fourteen.

"Nightlight" - Lampara fishing in the Istrian sea
"Lampara" fishing is based on the use of a light source to attract and capture with the nets whole shoals of fish. In its daily and demanding repetition of gestures, actions and tasks, it requires a careful organization and coordination between the members of the crew; as much in the capturing stage as in the selection of sizes and preservation of the fish. A series of processes that follows its own precise ritual. "Nightlight" is an exploration of a day's work of fishing on board of a "lampara" boat in the Istrian sea. The mediaeval town of Piran is located on a narrow promontory that juts out into Piran Bay like the bow of a ship. On a cliff above the old town is the Sanct George Church, and a bell tower on the town’s fortified walls provides a splendid view of the mainland, a maze of roof tops and the main square. Travelling further south, Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula and City Hall reveals much of its history. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and palaces, squares and religious buildings were constructed. In the fertile countryside lies yet another Istrian gem, Hum, the ‘smallest town in the world’ with its well-preserved gate, cobblestones and single lane. Portorož is the only real resort on the Slovenian Riviera with several hotels lining its waterfront and since the Danube Monarchy it has been a fashionable meeting place of the elite of Central Europe. Istria is a beauty with many faces, a rediscovered Adria dream and an almost forgotten paradise.

Therefore, we are dealing here with most ancient Croatian music system, not present in any other European music.
This genuine music expression, carried over from generation to generation, has been rooted in the essence of the people.
Melography (note writing) of the distinctive, genuine music has been made possible thanks to the great Croatian musicologist and composer Ivan Matetić Ronjgov (1880-1960), who has deciphered the patterns of popular singing in this area, has theoretically explained the essence of the music and has fixed the scale of hexacordic system of tight intervals , naming it later the „Istrian scale".
From sptember 2009, Istrian scale is on UNESCO`s Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Two-part singing and playing in the Istrian Scale is a complex style of folk music found even outside Istria and the Croatian Littoral, but it is most compactly preserved precisely in this area. Basically, two-part singing is based on non-tempered tone relations and a characteristic color of tone that is achieved in vocal music by powerful singing, partly through the nose.
There is often a degree of improvisation and variation during the performance in both voices, but endings in unison or in octave remain as a strict rule. This feature can be noticed in bugarenje sub-style, too, regardless of the fact that the lower voice drops additionally for a second or a diminished third.
Most of tone rows consist of four to six tones. Metro-rhythmical organization, formal structure and structure of the sung text range from simple to very complex patterns, and the relationship between music and lyrics is specific.

Basically, two-part singing is based on non-tempered tone relations and a characteristic color of tone that is achieved in vocal music by powerful singing, partly through the nose.
There is often a degree of improvisation and variation during the performance in both voices, but endings in unison or in octave remain as a strict rule. This feature can be noticed in bugarenje sub-style, too, regardless of the fact that the lower voice drops additionally for a second or a diminished third.
Most of tone rows consist of four to six tones. Metro-rhythmical organization, formal structure and structure of the sung text range from simple to very complex patterns, and the relationship between music and lyrics is specific.

A series of processes that follows its own precise ritual. "Nightlight" is an exploration of a day's work of fishing on board of a "lampara" boat in the Istrian sea.

Proto/e/co/logics: speculative materialism in architecture, a summer symposium curated by Croatian architects Alisa Andrasek and Bruno Juricic, and staged in the beautiful setting of the Rovinj archipelago on the Istrian coast, aimed to 'tease out speculative directions for architecture beyond innocent and reductive approaches to ecology.' The focus for Andrasek, co-founder of biothing in London, and Juricic, was on architects finding an agency within nature, 'a condition that is already artificial', embracing the complexity of society.
Recent tendencies have indeed taken a unique set of positions, driven by mathematical and computational abstractions, as the duo observe, transforming the ways in which architects consider the 'matter-information relationship'. The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula on Istria’s Mediterranean coastline in the north of Croatia. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s port cities, harmonious and compact, a perfect cityscape. In the eighteenth century the city’s inhabitants built their basilica according to the plans of Venetian architect, Giovanni Dozzi, on the foundation of a previous Romanesque building. The bright interior of the imposing three-nave basilica contains splendid architecture, fine ceiling paintings and altars. Although Rovinj fell for a long time under the protection of the naval power of Venice, it was still haunted by the Genoese, pirates and pestilence, but the city managed to survive all of its tribulations and was designated as a cultural monument in 1963. The wealthy people of ancient Rome once thought of the region as a holiday paradise and so it has remained right up until the present day. The romantic Pearl Of The Croatian Riviera has lost nothing of its original charm. Rovinj encapsulates history, culture and beauty!

Situated close to the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula in Coatia, is Pula, the oldest city on the eastern Adriatic coast. In Roman times the large square of this historic centre contained a forum and has many buildings that reflect the city’s recent history, including the Renaissance Town Hall that was built in 1296 at the end of Constantinople rule. Next to the Town Hall is the well-preserved Temple Of Augustus that dates back to 14 A.D. and was dedicated to the Roman Emperor. Prior to Roman times, it was Greek historians who first mentioned Pula in connection with a city founded by the Argonauts. Pula’s monumental Roman amphitheatre today ranks among the six largest of those that once belonged to the Roman Empire. The one hundred and five metre wide structure could accommodate twenty three thousand spectators. Numerous games and executions took place within it until 404 A.D. when gladiatorial battles were forbidden and the arena became a market place. Pula is a city of Roman roots, Byzantine monuments, past Venetian rule and recent K. and K. memories: an intriguing blend of history!

Zagreb is its political and cultural focal point, an amiable capital city situated at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The Kaptol district has been its Catholic heart since the Middle Ages. An atmospheric place, Upper Town is a gem Zagreb’s historic past. North of Zagreb on the western border with Slovenia, the picture-perfect Veliki Tabor Castle rises on a hill, its Renaissance courtyard with columns and arcades possessing a touch of southern elegance. Kumrovec, birthplace of the former President of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, is located south of the castle and is now a museum village. The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula, further south on the Adriatic coast. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s harbour cities. Situated close to the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula is Pula, the oldest city on Croatia‘s eastern Adriatic coast. The largest square of the Old Town, and today‘s main square, was originally located on the site of a Roman forum. The historical centre of Split is a cultural work of art, its palace, sea aspect and bay a harmonious blend of both ancient and mediaeval times. Dubrovnik‘s historic centre possesses many treasures such as the Onofri Fountain, the Saint Spas Chapel and the Franciscan Church. Due to its magnificent location, unique Old Town and beautiful buildings, Dubrovnik has become tantamount to an amazing work of art. Croatia is a country of timeless Mediterranean beauty, a place in the sun where history reflects in the Adriatic and Occident meets Orient - a Balkan paradise!

Koper is a major harbour city in Istria which is located on the Slovenian Riviera.The old town can be entered through the last of the twelve gates of the city’s former defensive wall. A stone coat of arms, various reliefs and inscriptions highlight the long history of the city in which for five hundred years Venetian rule shaped its destiny. An archway in the Praetorian Palace leads to a classic Venetian square, the Titov Trg which dates back to the fifteenth century. The Piazza is one of the most beautiful Venetian squares of the entire Adriatic region and the cathedral which frames the square has numerous architectural styles. Brollo, an area just beyond the centre of the city, served as a collecting basin for rainwater which was drawn by two wells from a cistern below. The Gothic, Fontico, was used for the storage of surplus grain which was distributed to the people in years of hardship. Today Koper is Slovenia’s window to the world and the country’s only seaport.
