Orkney /ˈɔːrkni/ (Scottish Gaelic: Arcaibh), also known as the Orkney Islands, is an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, United Kingdom. Situated off the north coast of Great Britain, Orkney is 16 kilometres (10 mi) north of the coast of Caithness and comprises approximately 70 islands, of which 20 are inhabited. The largest island, Mainland, often referred to as "the Mainland", has an area of 523.25 square kilometres (202 sq mi), making it the sixth-largest Scottish island and the tenth-largest island in the British Isles. The largest settlement and administrative centre is Kirkwall.
The name "Orkney" dates back to the 1st century BC or earlier, and the islands have been inhabited for at least 8,500 years. Originally occupied by Mesolithic and Neolithic tribes and then by the Picts, Orkney was invaded and forcibly annexed by Norway in 875 and settled by the Norse. The Scottish Parliament then re-annexed the earldom to the Scottish Crown in 1472, following the failed payment of a dowry for James III's bride, Margaret of Denmark. Orkney contains some of the oldest and best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe, and the "Heart of Neolithic Orkney" is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kirkwall Airport (IATA: KOI, ICAO: EGPA) is the main airport serving Orkney in Scotland. It is located 2.5 NM (4.6 km; 2.9 mi) southeast of Kirkwall and is owned by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited. The airport is used by Flybe franchise service, operated by Loganair.
The airport was built and commissioned in 1940 as RAF Grimsetter for the defence of the Scapa Flow naval base. In 1943 the Royal Naval Air Service took over, as RNAS Kirkwall then HMS Robin. Control passed in 1948 to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and in 1986 to Highlands and Islands Airports.
The Ring of Brodgar (or Brogar, or Ring o' Brodgar) is a Neolithic henge and stone circle about 6 miles north-east of Stromness on the Mainland, the largest island in Orkney, Scotland. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.
The Ring of Brodgar (or Brogar, or Ring o' Brodgar) is a Neolithic henge and stone circle in Orkney, Scotland. Most henges do not contain stone circles; Brodgar is a striking exception, ranking with Avebury (and to a lesser extent Stonehenge) among the greatest of such sites. The ring of stones stands on a small isthmus between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. These are the northernmost examples of circle henges in Britain. Unlike similar structures such as Avebury, there are no obvious stones inside the circle, but since the interior of the circle has never been excavated by archaeologists, the possibility remains that wooden structures, for example, may have been present. The site has resisted attempts at scientific dating and the monument's age remains uncertain. It is generally thought to have been erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC, and was, therefore, the last of the great Neolithic monuments built on the Ness. A project called The Ring of Brodgar Excavation 2008 was undertaken in the summer of that year in an attempt to settle the age issue and help answer other questions about a site that remains relatively poorly understood. The results of the excavation are still preliminary.
Robert Llewellyn (born 10 March 1956, in Northampton, Northamptonshire) is an English actor, comedian and writer best known as the mechanoid Kryten in the hit TV sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf and as a presenter of the TV engineering gameshow Scrapheap Challenge. He is a science and technology enthusiast, a promoter of renewable technologies and electric cars and an atheist and skeptic who frequently gives talks at science and technology events. He is also active online.
Llewellyn's first foray into the world of show business started out as a hobby, organising a few amateur cabaret evenings in a riverside warehouse overlooking Tower Bridge in London. The shows were a great success and he eventually helped form an alternative comedy theatre group called the Joeys. Within six months he had stopped working as a shoemaker and started performing professionally with the group alongside Bernie Evans, Nigel Ordish and Graham Allum. The group toured Britain and France in the early 1980s with an initial idea of exploring sexual politics between men. Llewellyn wrote much of the material, and also began writing novels. The group split in 1985, having toured for years and done thousands of shows.

Time Team's third outing sees them in Scotland, after schoolchildren on the Orkney island of Sanday asked them to investigate local mounds that could, reputedly, be of Viking origin. This is the first time the Team have looked for Norse archaeological finds.
We love Orkney. If you let us, we could talk about how great it is till the Highland coos come home. But don’t just take our word for it - who knows Orkney better than the people who live there? Hear real Orkney locals talking about why they love their homeland and discover what makes these beautiful islands so special and unique. I’m an Orkney virgin no more! While planning my itinerary, I decided at the last minute to snip two days off of London, which I’ve visited countless times, and go somewhere I’ve never been before: the Orkneys. (When all else is equal, it’s always fun to try something entirely new. I’ve been exploring Europe all my life…and there are endless amazing places yet to uncover.) I flew into a tiny slingshot of an airport in the only sizeable Orkney town, Kirkwall, and I spent an entire day with a local guide. In this clip — just a moment of my time with Kinlay — I’m learning the story of Scapa Flow and the island’s fascinating WWII history. (This is Day 87 of my “100 Days in Europe” series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reportin...
Robert meets a team who are building affordable housing on Orkney and are taking advantage of new technology to create houses that are not only cheap to build, but very cheap to live in. People don't always realise that Orkney is made up of a number of islands and outwith the mainland isle, the many other populated isles enjoy an even gentler pace of life and have much to offer whether you just go for a visit or you decide to stay. Find out more here.
Subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/MegalithomaniaUK. Kate explores the best of a diverse range of sites around the almost pristine archaeological environments of Orkney and Shetland. Shetland alone has over 5000 registered archaeological sites. Kate discusses the exciting new discoveries in Orkney which will potentially turn our known approach to the Prehistoric archaeology of Britain on its head. When the finger points at the moon, the fool looks at the finger. Is there evidence to suggest that a priesthood of archeoastronomers were masterminding projects on a vast scale? Just how far did their influence spread? Kate touches on sites such as Staneydale Temple, Maeshowe, Skara Brae, The Stones of Stenness, The Ring of Brodgar and more. The Island of Orkney, just north of the Scottish mainland, was once the center of a great Neolithic civilization, and today the Standing Stones of Stennes, the Ring of Brodgar, and the ancient stone village of Skara Brae reward intrepid travelers with their monumental forms and mysterious presence. Orkney also hosts the medieval Nordic town of Kirkwall, with its Viking cathedral and ruined palace.
Megalithomania's Hugh Newman is currently exploring Orkney with American researcher Jj Ainsworth. On 5th July, the Ness of Brodgar excavation got underway, and we met up with lead archaeologist Nick Card and got a guided tour around the site from a local tour guide. Trench 'T' has some important new discoveries, such as huge recumbent monoliths, and a carved stone sphere was also unearthed a couple of years ago. This exclusive video includes an interview with Nick and a thorough look at the site, that sits between The Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness stone circles. No doubt more discoveries will be made. Copyright Hugh Newman/Megalithomania 2017. All Rights Reserved. http://www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk/ http://www.hughnewman.co.uk http://www.megalithomania.co.uk

In Orkney there’s time to stop and think about how the elements shape the islands you see before you. To gaze out across the sea and watch as it slowly moulds the cliffs and the beaches. To hear the call of migrating birds as they fly in on the wind. To wonder how many more thousand-year-old secrets the earth under your feet could be hiding. And to imagine the stories once told around a fire, and the stories yet to be heard. Come and visit Orkney, see the elements that shape these islands and feel them stir your soul. Explore the ancient historic sites of the Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae and the Italian Chapel. Catch a glimpse of seals, puffins and the local sheep eating seaweed on the beach. Get a taste of Orkney with local producers of beef, mutton, cheese, ice cream, whisky and ale. O...

My journey from Inverness to Orkney. The final scene takes place at the Brough of Birsay, the epic point at which the Atlantic Ocean on the left (West) meets the North Sea on the right (East). The zigzag line in the center is the road that leads to the island, where the original heart of Norse power once resided. It is only accessible at low tide. Plan your own tour with Orkney Aspects Tours, led by the brilliant Pat Stone. Such sights can be yours! www.orkneyaspects.co.uk/ Video by Feliza Mirasol, August 2015. Song featured is "Second Wind" by John-Flor Sisante.
Please "Sucribe to my channel" and "LIKE" this Video! There is a saying in Orkney that if you scratch the soil it bleeds archaeology. It's almost true as the islands are notoriously rich in archaeological remains, more concentrated here than anywhere else in Europe. Find out more in this archaeology film from orkney.com.

Welcome to the dark corners of the earth
Madness river full of old bitterness
Black growns rule the world
Drowned deep in abyssal night
Psychotic dawn of new era
Archaic wind of twisted truth
Unhealthy opera
Ode to the ancient stars
Unhealthy messiah
Quest for the healing seed
Into infinity of the sea
You can hear the voices of decline
Tearing away all of your dreams
Passing away through human kind
Throwing away each guilty crimes
To indoctrinate you in its side
Behind this irreversible theater
Water runs like a blinding acid reign
Burning to the bones
Opponents resistance
Psychotic dawn of new era
Archaic wind of twisted truth
Unhealthy opera
Ode to the ancient stars
Unhealthy messiah
