John Dunn was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1834. From the age of 17, he earned a living riding transports and hunting in Zululand.
He mastered the Zulu language and traditions, befriended Zulu chiefs and worked as a diplomat and negotiator for local tribes. Chiefs rewarded Dunn by giving him wives, much to the anger of his European wife: Catherine.
Many years later, the King of the Zulus, Cetshwayo, made Dunn his advisor, and he was given his own chiefdom in Mtunznini.
In 1879, Dunn betrayed Cetshwayo, and helped the British win the Anglo-Zulu war and annex Zululand.
Zululand was divided between 13 rulers, and Dunn became one of the most powerful with the largest estate.
Dunn died in 1895 with 48 wives and 117 children. His 6000 descendants still have rights to the land granted to him by Cetshwayo, and his grave lies near the Tugela River. .

Josef Marais sings South African traditional folk ballads and original songs. This is one of fifteen tunes from an early album set of 78 rpm records on the DECCA label, released in 1946. This is his third album, but his first teamed with Miranda. She sings in only three of the fifteen tunes presented in this album. Wasn't long before they married and went on to perform before sold out audiences for the next 30 years.
These are pretty much the original cuts of these songs, though many were re-recorded in the 1950s and 1960s with large orchestras. These earlier recordings are hard to find and have the charm these songs are suppose to have, in my humble opinion.

With no written records from the Zulus themselves, historians and anthropologists have pieced together their history from a smattering of sources. We first learn of the Zulu as a minor tribe of the Bantu people, living in South Africa. Shaka Zulu, the man who would organize them into an empire, was born the illegitimate son of a Zulu king. He was sent away with his mother Nandi to grow up in her tribe, the Langeni, but he eventually caught the attention of Dingiswayo, the leader of another powerful tribe called the Mtethwa. Appointed as the leader of a squadron called an ibutho, Shaka developed new tactics including a short "iklwa" fighting spear and a simple but effective military maneuever called "the Bull Horn." When his father died, Shaka - now a successful military leader - returned with Dingiswayo's backing to assassinate the rightful heir and assume control of his native tribe. Just a year later, though, the neighboring Ndwandwe tribe murdered Dingiswayo and Shaka vowed revenge on their leader, Zwide. He then launched a bloody war that, combined with the strains created by European colonization, led to the Mefacane, or the Crushing.

Police and security forces in Durban are on standby as thousands of Zulu supporters of South Africa's opposition Inkatha Freedom Party gather for a special rally called by Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Officials of President Nelson Mandela's ruling African National Congress have warned there will be violence.
And Zulu King Goodwill Zwelethini and his supporters will boycott the meeting: they claim it's unconstitutional.
Supporters of Inkatha's Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi are supposed to gather for a so-called Imbizo or national meeting.
The aim is to bind supporters to a Zulu covenant to distinguish them from Zulu supporters of the ANC.
For Buthelezi, it is all part of a strategy to gain more autonomy for the province of Durban which Inkatha controls.
But local ANC officials warn the planned meeting will lead to violence.
SOUND BITE:
"Definitely, whenever they have got this so-called imbizo, which actually is an IFP rally, people get killed, tensions rise and, of course, the flight of investors follows."

A split between Buthelezi and a vital former supporter, Zulu King Goodwill Zwelethini, has only added fuel to the fire.

Racial and cultural groups who will be convened at his instance and no other person can call an imbizo. What is happening here he views it as an IFP rally."

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. Shaka
Shaka kaSenzangakhona (circa 1787 – 22 September 1828), also known as Shaka Zulu (Zulu pronunciation: [ˈʃaːɠa]), was one of the most influential monarchs of the Zulu Kingdom.
He was born near present-day Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal Province. According to tradition, Shaka was conceived during an act of what began as ukuhlobonga, a form of sexual foreplay without penetration allowed to unmarried couples, also known as "the fun of the roads" (ama hlay endlela), during which the lovers were "carried away".
Due to persecution as a result of his illegitimacy, Shaka spent his childhood in his mother's settlements. He is recorded as having been initiated there and inducted into an ibutho lempi (fighting unit). In his early days, Shaka served as a warrior under the sway of Dingiswayo, chieftain of the Mthethwa, to whom the Zulu were then paying tribute.
Dingiswayo called up the emDlatsheni iNtanga (age-group), of which Shaka was part, and incorporated it into the Izichwe regiment. Shaka served as a Mthethwa warrior for perhaps as long as ten years, and distinguished himself with his courage and his adept skill as a close combat warrior. This skill gained the attention of Dingiswayo, who became even more interested in Shaka when he discovered Shaka's royal bloodline. He honoured Shaka by making him commander of a regiment or ibutho.

Mangosuthu Buthelezi
Mangosuthu Buthelezi (born 27 August 1928) is a South African politician and Zulu tribal leader who founded the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1975 and was Chief Minister of the KwaZulu bantustan until 1994. He was Minister of Home Affairs of South Africa from 1994 to 2004. His praise name is Shenge.
Throughout much of the apartheid area, Buthelezi was considered one of the foremost black leaders. He played a key role in creating a framework for a negotiated solution to South Africa's racial conflict, signing the landmark Mahlabatini Declaration of Faith in 1974 with Harry Schwarz. During the CODESA negotiations of the early 1990s, he represented the IFP. Following the introduction of the universal franchise in the 1994 general election, Buthelezi led the IFP to join the government of national unity, led by Nelson Mandela. Buthelezi served as Minister of Home Affairs until 2004. He continues to serve as both leader of the IFP and an MP, retaining his seat in the 2014 general election.

Princess Nqobangothando has taken a leading role as the annual reed dance at eNyokeni Royal Palace kicked off in South Africa. The 2017 annual reed dance in South Africa got off to a colourful start some days ago as the Zulu monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini presided over the event. Thousands of young women came out to participate in the event. It all started well with the local mayor expressing his pride in the continuation of the decades-old custom.The ceremony is known as Umkhosi woMhlanga, and takes place every year in September at the Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal. The girls come from all parts of Zululand, and in recent years there are also smaller groups from Swaziland, as well as more distant places such as Botswana and Pondoland. All girls are required to undergo a virginity test before they are allowed to participate in a royal dance. In recent years the testing practice has been met with some opposition.The girls wear traditional attire, including beadwork, and izigege and izinculuba that show their bottoms. They also wear anklets, bracelets, necklaces, and colourful sashes. Each sash has appendages of a different colour, which denote whether or not the girl is betrothed. As part of the ceremony, the young women dance bare-breasted for their king, and each maiden carries a long reed, which is then deposited as they approach the king. The girls take care to choose only the longest and strongest reeds, and then carry them towering above their heads in a slow procession up the hill to Enyokeni Palace. The procession is led by the chief Zulu princess, who takes a prominent role throughout the festival. This footage was taken during Burton's fourth trip to the Zulu countryside in 2003. Burton's wife Sarah was behind the camera. The whole sparring session lasted about forty five minutes, with some time taken for pointers on set-ups, body movement, and feinting. The stick is a Zulu "sagila" made of hardwood with the end flaring out into a ball. The ball was covered with a little bit of padding and taped. That keeps it from breaking bones, but it still packs quite a wallop, as evidenced by the photo in the video. I have had a wonderful experience each time I have visited this group. The men show tremendous hospitality, and are very eager to help me learn. Of course, most of the learning comes in the form of sparring experience, so they are equally eager to hit me! The sparring sessions are almost always a laughing session, as it is just so much fun. Each time a new trick is revealed and a good blow lands, everyone laughs, and often congratulations is offered. It is an ideal environment for developing functional fighting skill. To all the martial artists out there, please note that 95% of the training is actual sparring. Techniques are learned and practiced during sparring, instead of being drilled with a static partner. The only other form of training is during the dances where the sticks, shields, and spears are wielded with stunning grace and ferocity. Josef Marais sings South African traditional folk ballads and original songs. This is one of fifteen tunes from an early album set of 78 rpm records on the DECCA label, released in 1946. This is his third album, but his first teamed with Miranda. She sings in only three of the fifteen tunes presented in this album. Wasn't long before they married and went on to perform before sold out audiences for the next 30 years. These are pretty much the original cuts of these songs, though many were re-recorded in the 1950s and 1960s with large orchestras. Battle of Isandlwana in 1879, where approximately 22,000 Zulu warriors defeated a contingent of approximately 1,500 British and native troops in the first engagement of the Anglo-Zulu War. The force was largely wiped out by the Zulus under King Cetshwayo. The battle remains the single greatest defeat for the British army at the hands of a native army.

We first learn of the Zulu as a minor tribe of the Bantu people, living in South Africa. Shaka Zulu, the man who would organize them into an empire, was born the illegitimate son of a Zulu king. He was sent away with his mother Nandi to grow up in her tribe, the Langeni, but he eventually caught the attention of Dingiswayo, the leader of another powerful tribe called the Mtethwa. Appointed as the leader of a squadron called an ibutho, Shaka developed new tactics including a short "iklwa" fighting spear and a simple but effective military maneuever called "the Bull Horn." When his father died, Shaka - now a successful military leader - returned with Dingiswayo's backing to assassinate the rightful heir and assume control of his native tribe. With no written records from the Zulus themselves, historians and anthropologists have pieced together their history from a smattering of sources. We first learn of the Zulu as a minor tribe of the Bantu people, living in South Africa. Shaka Zulu, the man who would organize them into an empire, was born the illegitimate son of a Zulu king. He was sent away with his mother Nandi to grow up in her tribe, the Langeni, but he eventually caught the attention of Dingiswayo, the leader of another powerful tribe called the Mtethwa. Appointed as the leader of a squadron called an ibutho, Shaka developed new tactics including a short "iklwa" fighting spear and a simple but effective military maneuever called "the Bull Horn." When his father died, Shaka - now a successful military leader - returned with Dingiswayo's backing to assassinate the rightful heir and assume control of his native tribe. Police and security forces in Durban are on standby as thousands of Zulu supporters of South Africa's opposition Inkatha Freedom Party gather for a special rally called by Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Officials of President Nelson Mandela's ruling African National Congress have warned there will be violence.
And Zulu King Goodwill Zwelethini and his supporters will boycott the meeting: they claim it's unconstitutional.
Supporters of Inkatha's Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi are supposed to gather for a so-called Imbizo or national meeting.
The aim is to bind supporters to a Zulu covenant to distinguish them from Zulu supporters of the ANC.
For Buthelezi, it is all part of a strategy to gain more autonomy for the province of Durban which Inkatha controls.
But local ANC officials warn the planned meeting will lead to violence.
SOUND BITE:
"Definitely, whenever they have got this so-called imbizo, which actually is an IFP rally, people get killed, tensions rise and, of course, the flight of investors follows."

Princess Nqobangothando has taken a leading role as the annual reed dance at eNyokeni Royal Palace kicked off in South Africa. The 2017 annual reed dance in South Africa got off to a colourful start some days ago as the Zulu monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini presided over the event. Thousands of young women came out to participate in the event.
It all started well with the local mayor expressing his pride in the continuation of the decades-old custom.The ceremony is known as Umkhosi woMhlanga, and takes place every year in September at the Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal. The girls come from all parts of Zululand, and in recent years there are also smaller groups from Swaziland, as well as more distant places such as Botswana and Pondoland.
All girls are required to undergo a virginity test before they are allowed to participate in a royal dance. In recent years the testing practice has been met with some opposition.The girls wear traditional attire, including beadwork, and izigege and izinculuba that show their bottoms. They also wear anklets, bracelets, necklaces, and colourful sashes. Each sash has appendages of a different colour, which denote whether or not the girl is betrothed.
As part of the ceremony, the young women dance bare-breasted for their king, and each maiden carries a long reed, which is then deposited as they approach the king. The girls take care to choose only the longest and strongest reeds, and then carry them towering above their heads in a slow procession up the hill to Enyokeni Palace. The procession is led by the chief Zulu princess, who takes a prominent role throughout the festival. If the reed should break before the girl reaches that point, it is considered a sign that the girl has already been sexually active.

Burton "Lucky Dog" Richardson doing Zulu stick fighting sparring with a Zulu lower chief in QuaZulu Natal, South Africa. This footage was taken during Burton's fourth trip to the Zulu countryside in 2003. Burton's wife Sarah was behind the camera. The whole sparring session lasted about forty five minutes, with some time taken for pointers on set-ups, body movement, and feinting.
The stick is a Zulu "sagila" made of hardwood with the end flaring out into a ball. The ball was covered with a little bit of padding and taped. That keeps it from breaking bones, but it still packs quite a wallop, as evidenced by the photo in the video.
I have had a wonderful experience each time I have visited this group. The men show tremendous hospitality, and are very eager to help me learn. Of course, most of the learning comes in the form of sparring experience, so they are equally eager to hit me!
The sparring sessions are almost always a laughing session, as it is just so much fun. Each time a new trick is revealed and a good blow lands, everyone laughs, and often congratulations is offered. It is an ideal environment for developing functional fighting skill.
To all the martial artists out there, please note that 95% of the training is actual sparring. Techniques are learned and practiced during sparring, instead of being drilled with a static partner. The only other form of training is during the dances where the sticks, shields, and spears are wielded with stunning grace and ferocity.
Once again, I thank all of my Zulu friends for always welcoming me with great hospitality, and I thank them for sharing so generously with me. Ngiyabonga Kakhulu!

This is one of the lasting music legacy left behind by late Chief Ozomena Nzugbe, who passes away on 28th Jan 2014. Chief Ozomena, popularly known as Ayaka Nsugbe, recorded his last studio album in Dec 2013 titled, “My Last Prophet To My People”, which is yet to be released by his record label, Morgan Entertainment. Some of his greatest hits includes; “Uzu Awka Special”, Onwu Ali Chukwu”, “Miracle Water”, “Tribute To Osadebe”. May his soul continue to rest in peace.
