Teenager killed, two others hurt after police chase in the Perth Hills

A teenager is dead and two other teens are seriously injured after they crashed their car following a police pursuit in the Perth Hills overnight.

A 16-year-old boy, the driver of the red Nissan Pulsar sedan, died at the scene of the crash on Great Eastern Highway in Hovea.

Police have confirmed the vehicle was being pursued by officers, but the chase had been abandoned before the car crashed into a tree.

Two other passengers in the Nissan Pulsar - an 18-year-old woman and another 16-year-old boy - received serious injuries and had to be cut free from the wreckage.

Last night the woman was in a serious but stable condition in Royal Perth Hospital.

The 16-year-old injured boy, who was freed after several hours, was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital and is reported to have serious leg and spinal injuries.

Major Crash and Internal Affairs Unit officers are investigating.

Police say the incident started about 5.30pm, when the sedan came to the attention of a marked police vehicle on Altone Road in Lockridge.

A pursuit was authorised but it was soon terminated due to the dangerous driving of the Nissan.

Shortly afterwards, on approach to the intersection of Great Northern and Reid Highway, the Nissan Pulsar side-swiped a Volkswagen Golf, causing minor damage to it.

The female driver of that car escaped without injury.

About 15 minutes later the car was spotted again by an unmarked police vehicle on Roe Highway near Morrison Road, before taking the exit ramp towards Great Eastern Highway.

The police vehicle was again authorised to pursue the Nissan.

It is alleged the 16-year-old driver of the Nissan refused to stop and evaded a police stinger device on Great Eastern Highway.

Minutes later, due to the dangerous manner of driving, the Police Communications Centre instructed the pursuit be terminated.

Shortly after, the Nissan Pulsar crashed into a tree.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
