Raoul Dufy
Raoul Dufy (French: [ʁa.ul dy.fi]; 3 June 1877 – 23 March 1953) was a French Fauvist painter, brother of Jean Dufy. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textiles, as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. He was also a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, Scenic designer, a designer of furniture, and a planner of public spaces.
Biography
Raoul Dufy was born into a large family at Le Havre, in Normandy. He left school at the age of fourteen to work in a coffee-importing company. In 1895, when he was 18, he started taking evening classes in art at Le Havre's École des Beaux-Arts (municipal art school). The classes were taught by Charles Lhuillier, who had been, forty years earlier, a student of the French portrait-painter, Ingres. There, Dufy met Raymond Lecourt and Othon Friesz with whom he later shared a studio in Montmartre and to whom he remained a lifelong friend. During this period, Dufy painted mostly Norman landscapes in watercolors.

Raoul Dufy was born on June 3, 1877, in Le Havre. Raoul came from a large family, he had eight siblings, and due to a shortage of money, Dufy left the school at the young age of 14, and started working for a coffee importing company.
After working there for four years, he began attending evening classes at Le Havre’s École des Beaux-Art, where he met Raymond Lecourt and Othon Friesz, with whom he was to form a lifelong friendship. In 1900, he decided to move to Paris, where he started taking classes at the École des Beaux-Arts.
Raoul adopted the impressionist style with a dedicated passion, and his art began to feature bold and sharp strokes of bright colors marked with broad brushstrokes that associated his style with that of the Fauve artists. He collaborated with Georges Braque and Emile Othon Friesz who worked in the Cubist style, however, Raoul returned to his own unique and uninhibited Fauvist style.
In 1911, Raoul was commissioned to illustrate Guillaume Apollinaire’s ‘Bestiaire ou cortege d’Orphee’, in which he incorporated the use of woodcuts. Raoul’s interests were piqued by the decorative art, and in 1912, he began developing designs for a textile company.
During the 1920s, Raoul became increasingly involved in designing ceramics and tapestries, and to give full reign to his experimentation and creativity, he set up his own cloth printing studio. He began conducting extensive travels within France, and abroad and during his journeys, he would make any scene that would strike his interests the subject of his canvas, and such subjects include any recreational scene such as concerts, parades, and horse races.
Raoul enjoyed spending his time in the French Riviera which has formed the subject of many of his iconic works. In 1927, he produced the series of ‘Paintings of Nice’, and in 1929, he produced his remarkable, ‘Bois de Boulogne’.
Raoul was captivated with the idea of developing compositions that could reflect light through the colour, and in the pursuit of this endeavor, he began experimenting with a wide and rich variety of materials such as cloth, ceramics and huge architectural decorations.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Raoul was a regular contributor at the Annual Salon de Tuileries, in Paris. In 1950, tragedy struck when Raoul was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which stole his ability to create magic on the canvas with his hands and decisive strokes of the brush.
In 1952, he was awarded the grand prize at the 26th Venice Biennale. Raoul Dufy died at Forcalquier, France, on March 23, 1953."

C’est avec joie qu’à coups de pinceaux rapides, il appose sur une mer bleue et vert émeraude, la myriade de couleurs des pavillons, voiles et bastingages pour dépeindre l’atmosphère heureuse du port.
La campagne normande attire aussi l’attention de ce Havrais d’origine. Le contraste des champs de blé jaunis par le soleil, des ciels lourds et orageux et de la végétation verdoyante des arbres et prairies, le fascine tant, qu’il reprendra le thème des moissons dans l’immense décor de la Fée Électricité conçue pour l’Exposition internationale de 1937.

Such joy emanates from this gouache, Visit of the English Squadron to Le Havre (Visite de l’Escadre anglaise au Havre)! “I know the sea as a bather, as a sailor and as a painter. It is as a painter that I prefer it!” His favorite subject of nautical festivals was a pretext for the artist to express this passion and create an explosion of color. With joyous, quick brushstrokes, he affixed the myriad of colors of the pavilions, sails, and rails onto a blue and emerald green sea to depict the happy atmosphere of the port.
The Normandy countryside also attracted the attention of this native of Le Havre. The contrast of the wheat fields yellowed by the sun, the heavy and stormy skies and the green vegetation of the trees and meadows fascinated him so much, that he included the theme of harvests in the immense setting of the Electricity Fairy designed for the International Exhibition of 1937.
These works are on display at the gallery until April 30.

Description: "Raoul Dufy was a renowned and notable French painter and designer, who is remembered for his dazzlingly bright paintings that depicted extravagance and the guiltless pursuit of pleasure.
Raoul Dufy was born on June 3, 1877, in Le Havre. Raoul came from a large family, he had eight siblings, and due to a shortage of money, Dufy left the school at the young age of 14, and started working for a coffee importing company.
After working there for four years, he began attending evening classes at Le Havre’s École des Beaux-Art, where he met Raymond Lecourt and Othon Friesz, with whom he was to form a lifelong friendship. In 1900, he decided to move to Paris, where he started taking classes at the École des Beaux-Arts.
Raoul adopted the impressionist style with a dedicated passion, and his art began to feature bold and sharp strokes of bright colors marked with broad brushstrokes that associated his style with that of the Fauve artists. He collaborated with Georges Braque and Emile Othon Friesz who worked in the Cubist style, however, Raoul returned to his own unique and uninhibited Fauvist style.
In 1911, Raoul was commissioned to illustrate Guillaume Apollinaire’s ‘Bestiaire ou cortege d’Orphee’, in which he incorporated the use of woodcuts. Raoul’s interests were piqued by the decorative art, and in 1912, he began developing designs for a textile company.
During the 1920s, Raoul became increasingly involved in designing ceramics and tapestries, and to give full reign to his experimentation and creativity, he set up his own cloth printing studio. He began conducting extensive travels within France, and abroad and during his journeys, he would make any scene that would strike his interests the subject of his canvas, and such subjects include any recreational scene such as concerts, parades, and horse races.
Raoul enjoyed spending his time in the French Riviera which has formed the subject of many of his iconic works. In 1927, he produced the series of ‘Paintings of Nice’, and in 1929, he produced his remarkable, ‘Bois de Boulogne’.
Raoul was captivated with the idea of developing compositions that could reflect light through the colour, and in the pursuit of this endeavor, he began experimenting with a wide and rich variety of materials such as cloth, ceramics and huge architectural decorations.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Raoul was a regular contributor at the Annual Salon de Tuileries, in Paris. In 1950, tragedy struck when Raoul was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which stole his ability to create magic on the canvas with his hands and decisive strokes of the brush.
In 1952, he was awarded the grand prize at the 26th Venice Biennale. Raoul Dufy died at Forcalquier, France, on March 23, 1953."

Today, Raoul Dufy is remembered as one the greatest of all the Fauvist artists of the early 20th century. What is less often know is his beautiful designs of textiles, environments, and sets for and haute couture. Dufy first designed for Paul Poiret in 1910 and continued this partnership with the fashion designer for many decades.

Raoul Dufy est un indépendant, un peintre, un céramiste, un designer, un concepteur de motifs de tissu qui a travaillé et collaboré avec d'autres professionnels, pas seulement des artistes.
Un petit tableau d'une série, tel que son atelier à Perpignan, la version conservée au très beau Musée des Beaux-arts de Valence, a une grande valeur biographique qui donne tout son intérêt aux yeux d'Artcothèque. C'est pour cela qu'on vous le présente aujourd'hui.

🇫🇷 Dans le cadre de l'exposition "VERT, Palettes de printemps", nous vous proposons de passer une minute avec Raoul Dufy, à la découvert de deux œuvres : "Visite de l’Escadre anglaise au Havre" et "Le champ de blé"
Quelle allégresse émane de cette gouache, Visite de l’Escadre anglaise au Havre ! « Je connais la mer comme baigneur, comme marin et comme peintre. C'est comme peintre que je la préfère ! ». Les fêtes nautiques, son sujet de prédilection, sont prétextes pour l’artiste d’exprimer cette passion et de faire exploser la couleur. C’est avec joie qu’à coups de pinceaux rapides, il appose sur une mer bleue et vert émeraude, la myriade de couleurs des pavillons, voiles et bastingages pour dépeindre l’atmosphère heureuse du port.
La campagne normande attire aussi l’attention de ce Havrais d’origine. Le contraste des champs de blé jaunis par le soleil, des ciels lourds et orageux et de la végétation verdoyante des arbres et prairies, le fascine tant, qu’il reprendra le thème des moissons dans l’immense décor de la Fée Électricité conçue pour l’Exposition internationale de 1937.

🇬🇧 As part of our "GREEN Spring palettes exhibition", let's spend one minute on video with Raoul Dufy, with both Visite de l'Escadre anglaise au Havre and Le champ de blé.
Such joy emanates from this gouache, Visit of the English Squadron to Le Havre (Visite de l’Escadre anglaise au Havre)! “I know the sea as a bather, as a sailor and as a painter. It is as a painter that I prefer it!” His favorite subject of nautical festivals was a pretext for the artist to express this passion and create an explosion of color. With joyous, quick brushstrokes, he affixed the myriad of colors of the pavilions, sails, and rails onto a blue and emerald green sea to depict the happy atmosphere of the port.
The Normandy countryside also attracted the attention of this native of Le Havre. The contrast of the wheat fields yellowed by the sun, the heavy and stormy skies and the green vegetation of the trees and meadows fascinated him so much, that he included the theme of harvests in the immense setting of the Electricity Fairy designed for the International Exhibition of 1937.
These works are on display at the gallery until April 30.

Raoul Dufy (French: [ʁa.ul dy.fi]; 3 June 1877 – 23 March 1953) was a French Fauvist painter, brother of Jean Dufy. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textiles, as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. He was also a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, Scenic designer, a designer of furniture, and a planner of public spaces.
Biography
Raoul Dufy was born into a large family at Le Havre, in Normandy. He left school at the age of fourteen to work in a coffee-importing company. In 1895, when he was 18, he started taking evening classes in art at Le Havre's École des Beaux-Arts (municipal art school). The classes were taught by Charles Lhuillier, who had been, forty years earlier, a student of the French portrait-painter, Ingres. There, Dufy met Raymond Lecourt and Othon Friesz with whom he later shared a studio in Montmartre and to whom he remained a lifelong friend. During this period, Dufy painted mostly Norman landscapes in watercolors.
