Tonight in the Explorers Room: Year of the Compañero!

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we attempt to go into 2018 with fervor (before taking a three week absence, returning first week in February).  Ferocious French psych, dialectical Calypso, exhortations of comradery, ponderings as to what tomorrow holds, and more, much more.  Join me, tonight, to usher in another year from the exploratory interior.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: A Look Back at the Year That Was

Tonight we look back at another strange year in the Explorers Room with a program comprising one song from each show of 2017.  A retrospective overview of the year that was before we carry on upriver to the as-yet unknown territories of a new year.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Deep in Velvet, An Electronic Magic Carpet

Tonight in the Explorers Room: I just got my good turntable fixed, and Little Danny needs a fill-in for the Cool Blue Flame; that means we'll be lying around, digging in, and hearing five hours of extended cuts from even more dollar-bin records.  Just like that show from a few weeks back, but longer and deeper.  Mood music, latin, exotica, jazz, all sorts of great stuff I've found hiding in the dust – the banal, the sublime, and the subliminal.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Fantasies for Electromagnetic Tape

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear minimalist and experimental music, syncretic jazz, Turkish electronic sounds, South African masterpieces, and Don Cherry, among other things. Tune in, jump in the comments, hang out in the Room.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Exotica Gardens – Rituals and Ceremonies in Realms of the Unreal

Tonight in the Explorers Room, an evening of all-exotica pandemonium. We'll be taking a trip to exotic Tiki Gardens (a "South Sea Island Paradise in Florida"), exploring two venerable exotica compilation series – a more tweedy vision of exotica via the Britxotica! Trunk releases, and an extended sojourn in amongst the deranged offerings of the now almost-mythic Jungle Exotica series on Stripand consorting with both Satan and Pele in their respective infernos. Starting in just five minutes!

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Papayas, Mangoes & Mompos

Tonight in the Explorers Room, a sundry array of sounds and fruits from 'round the world: tomatoes and nylons, mambos and cumbias, Calypso jazz, Indonesian cha-chas, hi-fi music from Brazil, mangos and papayas.

Tonight in the Explorers Room – Piero Umiliani: Film Jazz, Synthi Times, Exotic Themes (Part Two)

Tonight in the Explorers Room we have another program dedicated to Piero Umiliani's extensive body of work, with an emphasis on psychedelic and erotic soundtracks, eerie library docu-exoticism, and a lot more synthi themes, recorded at Sound Work Shop on the Omicron label.  "Mah Nà Mah Nà" included this time, don't miss it!

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Piero Umiliani – Film Jazz, Synthi Times, Exotic Themes (part one)

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear the first in a two-part series looking at maestro Piero Umiliani's extensive body of work.  In part 1, we'll hear some of his more jazz-based recordings for film, a bit of soft exoticism and Orientalism, a few one-off singles, and a slew of synthi and atmospheric library themes. (Next week, more synthi stuff, as well as heavy grooves and erotic/psychedelic sounds.  For more of a focus on Umiliani's exotica, check out one of my very first shows here.)

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Kometenmelodies, Killer Bullets, Psychedelic Sanzas

Tonight in the Explorers Room, I have thrown together a wonderful and dizzying selection of kosmische synthi&krautrock sounds, spaghetti western weird themes, and some of my current favorite tracks by Francis Bebey.  Every sound tonight is extremely excellent.  See you there I hope!

TO THE ADVENTURE

Also, as you likely know, now is the October Fundraiser, which helps to carry WFMU through the leanest months of the year. Tonight in the Explorers Room: Red Velvet and Other Dollar-Bin Records I Have Loved

Every year, during its fall fundraiser, WFMU has "Singles Going Steady Week" – all DJs who choose to do so play whole shows of 45s and singles.  Here in the Explorers Room, we don't have a lot of singles, and only one working turntable at the moment, so in observance of the week's spirit if nothing else I'll be spinning extended selections from some of my most cherished dollar-bin LPs.  All vinyl, all $1 or less. Mambo, utter schmaltz, surf, private press weirdness, exotica, Hawaiiana, etc.  Let's get dustier than usual, even, and spend an evening on the floor together with some of my least-valuable, most-valued capsules of mood music.

ALSO: I BEG OF YOU! READ AND HEED

And now a note on the WFMU fundraiser: WFMU and Give the Drummer Radio encourage, implore, beseech, cajole, and entice you to contribute to our INTO THE BLACK fundraising campaign during the month of October. If you're already a supporter, consider converting your one-time pledge into a monthly sustaining pledge. This is our SWAG FOR LIFE option, which you can join for as little as $10 per month. Tell us how much and we will charge your card for that amount each month until you say stop. THIS IS THE SINGLE BEST WAY THAT YOU CAN HELP US.
