The Acela Express (/əˈsɛlə/ ə-SEL-ə; colloquially abbreviated to Acela) is Amtrak's high-speed rail service along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) in the Northeast United States between Washington, D.C., and Boston via 14 intermediate stops including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. Acela Express trains are the fastest trainsets in the Americas; the highest speed they attain is 150 mph (240 km/h) in revenue service. Acela trains use tilting technology, which helps control lateral centrifugal forces, allowing the train to travel at higher speeds on the sharply curved NEC without disturbing passengers.
The Acela operates along routes that are also used by freight and slower regional passenger traffic, and only reaches its maximum speed along short sections. This occurs mostly along the 226-mile (364 km) route from New York's Penn Station to Washington, D.C.'s Union Station, with a fastest scheduled time of 2 hours and 45 minutes and an average speed of 82 mph (132 km/h), including intermediate stops. Over this route, the Acela has been extremely successful, capturing a 75% share of air/train commuters between New York and Washington in 2011, up from 37% in 2000. Due to this competition, some airlines have even canceled service between Washington and New York.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak /ˈæmtræk/, is a partially government-funded American passenger railroad service. It is operated and managed as a for-profit corporation, and provides medium- and long-distance intercity service in the contiguous United States. Amtrak was founded in 1971 through the government-sponsored consolidation of most of the preexisting passenger rail companies in the United States.
Amtrak operates more than 300 trains each day on 21,300 miles (34,000 km) of track with select segments having civil operating speeds of 150 mph (240 km/h) and connecting more than 500 destinations in 46 states in addition to three Canadian provinces. In fiscal year 2015, Amtrak served 30.8 million passengers and had $2.185 billion in revenue, while employing more than 20,000 people. Nearly two-thirds of passengers come from the ten largest metropolitan areas and 83% of passengers travel on routes shorter than 400 miles. Its headquarters is at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

It is America's fastest train - the Acela! Take a look at a few clips of Amtrak's Acela Express train as it zooms along the North East Corridor. This train has a top speed of 150 miles per hour, and we will see Acela zoom through some of the fastest stretches of track on the line. Experience Acela! If you look at any Acela video, you'll most likely see somebody say "that's not 150 mph". I bought a Bushnell Speedster II and headed for Mansfield today, experiencing explosive sounds and rather fast speeds. Enjoy! At Amtrak we know the future of the Northeast Corridor depends on the investments we make today, which is why we are excited to announce the upcoming arrival of the next-generation of high-speed rail. The new trainsets will replace the current Acela Express equipment and begin service in 2021. For this project, we are pleased to be partnering with Alstom, a leading global provider of innovative systems and equipment in the railway sector. Alstom will be building these new trainsets in New York State, with 95% of the trainset’s components being made in America, and parts coming from 350 suppliers in 30 U.S. states. I returned to Kingston, Rhode Island to record more videos of Acela Express running near their maximum allowable speed. An Amtrak crew confirmed later that this is indeed part of their 150 mph zone.
**UPDATE** I have calculated the actual speed from the video. This was done in the video editor, by timing when the train begins to leave frame, and when the train actually leaves frame, taking that time and then calculating by the length of the train (9,013inches, or 751ft, 1in) Titled Run / Actual Speed 135Mph Run: 128.3mph 140mph Run: 129.9mph 145mph Run: 131.3mph 150mph Run: 161.5mph 155mph Run: 133.7mph 160mph Run: 134.8mph 165mph Run: 166.8mph 'Like' us on Facebook! http://www.facebook.com/AllAboardProductions On Monday, September 24th, 2012, Amtrak announced that the 165mph speed tests will commence tonight on the Northeast Corridor in New Jersey. On Friday (5-27) Train 2158 had a mechanical failure with the speedometer and managed to loose about 4,5 hours over Metro North tracks in CT. Since its was a holiday weekend, the only option was to send a rescue engine to tow the train the rest of the way to Boston. This is the first I believe ever an ACS 64 locomotive has towed an Acela Trainset. Here it is passing by TF Green Airport Station

This was taken on February 10th, 2017, after Winter Storm Niko buried Northeastern United States. It is now confirmed that the Acela Express and Northeast Regional trains can run as fast as 131 mph and 125 mph, respectively, even with snow along the tracks. Enjoy! The Station Inn..A Better Way to Railfan http://www.stationinnpa.com/ Pretty Fast....Pretty Shakey at this speed. Enjoy....
There's a train on a track
Painted silver, blue and black
Heading to Massachusetts
And then it's coming back
And it's entertaining by New Haven
Once you've had yourself a drink or two, ooh ooh
All alone on the Acela
Tell me baby, where the hell are you?
(Acela)
Ooh ooh
(Acela)
There's a girl on the train
Leaning on a window pane
Reading People Magazine
Just to help turn off her brain
And I swear I caught her staring at me
Maybe I've been staring at her too, ooh ooh
Shot to hell on the Acela
Just as well, there's nothing else to do
(Acela)
Ooh ooh
(Acela)
When they called "All aboard"
You were nowhere to be found
Though you swore you were sure
You'd come with me out of town
And I looked in all the stars
I looked in Hudson News
Searched for any sign of you
But you had not left any clues
I was so confused
What was I supposed to do?
Now the world is a blur
And the engine starts to purr
And we're flying through Rhode Island
The conductor calls me
"Sir, for your information it's a station at about 11: 22", ooh ooh
Got to get the next Acela
Got to make my way back home too
Got to get the next Acela
Got to get myself back home to you
