Yemen (i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

A senior Saudi prince and seven other officials have been killed in a helicopter crash near the country's border with Yemen, state media report. Prince Mansour bin Muqrin, the deputy governor of Asir province, was returning from an inspection tour when his aircraft came down near Abha late on Sunday, the interior ministry said. It did not give a cause for the crash. But it came hours after a major purge of the kingdom's political and business leadership. An anti-corruption body led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 32, ordered the detentions of dozens of people, including 11 princes, four ministers and dozens of ex-ministers. Analysts see the unprecedented move as an attempt to cement the power of the heir to the throne. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog World In Pictures ht...
Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have held rival rallies in the capital Sanaa in a sign of growing divisions between supporters of ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh and their Houthi rebel allies. Together the two sides control the capital and much of northern Yemen. They have been holding off forces loyal to Abd-Rabbu Mansur Hadi, the country's current president, who is backed by Saudi-led coalition forces. But recent tensions may be a threat to the rebel alliance. The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is worsening, as the country struggles with its civil war against rebels, backed by Saudi-led coalition and the country's official government. The UN calls Yemen's humanitarian situation the worst in the world. It also estimated that between March 2015 and October 2016, over 4,000 civilians were killed and more than 7,000 wounded. It says the biggest factor in this was coalition airstrikes. If you’ve been subscribed to VisualPolitik for a while, you already know that Saudi Arabia has the third best equipped army in the entire world. Plus, they have the support of American drones and the armies of neighbouring countries. They have more than 180 state of the art combat jets and 300,000 soldiers armed with the best weapons. On the other side, they have less than half the number of soldiers, and the weapons they are armed with are far from modern… It seems like a pretty unequal fight, right?! Well, in that case, it might surprise you to learn that Saudi Arabia is losing this war… How is it possible to explain why one of the most advanced armies in the world can’t beat a bunch of guerillas? Well, today we are going to answer this question. And don't forget to visit our friend’...

A massive explosion from an airstrike in Yemen’s capital left at least fifteen people dead and wounded dozens more on Monday, medical sources told Reuters. The attack was the latest -- and strongest -- in a series of air strikes led by Saudi Arabia in the Sana’a area. Saudi fighter planes bombed an area of Faj Attan mountain and targeted a military base that was housing scud missiles. The mountain sits near the Hadda district, which is home to embassies and the presidential palace. The explosion at the missile base shattered windows and tore holes in buildings and cars. According to Reuters, at least 15 people died in the blast. Al Jazeera reported more than 300 people were wounded. One witness at a local hospital told Reuters victims with debris wounds crowded the emergency room. ...

In Yemen, the war has driven hundreds of thousands of people to the brink of starvation. It's also halted exports, accelerated inflation and severely limited fuel imports. But people are still spending what little they have in this cash based economy. Nearly 90 percent of adult males, and 33% of women, in Yemen chew a stimulant known as khat. The approach has three main phases—inclusiveness, ownership and sustainability. During phase I, the period of temporary employment, individuals are encouraged to develop a business idea that they will implement individually or in association with others in Phase II. In Phase II, once the business plan is found to be solid, the project will triple the savings of the individual or group to provide start-up capital for implementation of the business concept. Phase III is a period of consolidation of the business and the project ensures that the young entrepreneurs have access to information about the business en...

These influences are seen primarily by their impact on small businesses, for instance avoiding subsidies and setting up loan programs that have a high likelihood for success. Due to its unique geographic location, Yemen has acquired a very distinctive culture from its neighbors; historically and culturally, the people of Yemen have closer ties with the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia) than they do with the rest of Arabia and the Middle East.Religion in Yemen primarily consists of two principal religious groups of Islam; Sunni and Shi'a. About 65% of the Muslim population is Sunni, and 30% is Shi'a. Sunnis are primarily Shafi'i, but also include significant groups of Malikis and Hanbalis. So in this Dubai food tour, we went around and ate Emirati food, rice and lamb, street food, karak tea, and finally ended with home cooked Emirati food at Peyman’s home. One thing I want to quickly mention, and Peyman and I discussed this in the video as well, is that Emirati food at restaurants is still not very common in Dubai. http://www.twitter.com/israel On 6 November 2014, over two thousand young people (and those who are simply young at heart) gathered near downtown Jerusalem to celebrate life. The "Simply Singing" initiative, which began at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, aims at bringing Jews and Arabs together through shared cultural events. Facilitators taught songs and invited participants to sing along in both Hebrew and Arabic. The event was headlined by singer Lubna Salame and the Yemen Blues band, who together created a special joint performance for the event. Yemen Blues is lead by singer Ravid Kahalani, who combines the ancient Jewish melodies of his birthplace in Yemen with West African, funk and mambo influences. The International Committee of the Red Cross has raised an alarm over Yemen’s challenges in the health sector. Peter Maurer, the charity’s president, said the overall situation in Yemen was “very dire, and very catastrophic” in terms of health. The two-year war has resulted in the world's worst-ever cholera epidemic, and hospitals are unable to keep up. According to the UN, nearly two million Yemeni children are acutely malnourished. About 50% of the health facilities in Yemen that provide lifesaving healthcare are non-functional due to the conflict. The World Bank and IDA are working with UNICEF & the World Health Organization on the Emergency Health and Nutrition Project, which supports mobile clinics that provide healthcare for children under 5 and pregnant women, supports public hospitals, and provides essential medications. The project also works to improve the water and sanitation system in Yemen.
With one of the world's highest maternal mortality rates, Yemen faces extreme hurdles when it comes to providing adequate healthcare to its women. Seven Yemeni women a day die of complications from pregnancy or childbirth -- leaving seven families in danger of collapse in the absence of a mother -- and nearly all of the deaths are preventable.

At a press conference in Sanaa, the International Committee of the Red Cross Operations Director said more than 8,500 suspected cholera cases have been reported in 14 governorates of Yemen from April 27 to May 13. The ministry's spokesman, Tamim Shami, says symptoms of some of the injured Yemenis show they were exposed to prohibited weapons dropped by Saudi war machines. During the briefing, Shami also highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation due to the shortage of medical supplies. He said that more than 23-thousand people are currently suffering from dengue fever and Malaria. Saudi fighter jets have also reportedly targeted drug containers used by charity organization Oxfam to fight deadly viruses. The World Health Organization says 242 people have been killed due to an outbreak of cholera that has engulfed war-torn Yemen, with about 23,500 other confirmed cases of the disease reported across the country in the past three weeks alone. The UN health agency said on Friday that a total of new 3,460 suspected cases of cholera and 20 deaths had been reported in the country in the past day alone. "The speed of the resurgence of this cholera epidemic is unprecedented," said Nevio Zagaria, the WHO country representative for Yemen. He said the number of suspected cholera cases could be far larger than those registered as humanitarian workers cannot access some parts of the country. Zagaria warned that the number of those infected could hit a quarter of a million people by the end of the year....

A deadly cholera outbreak is sweeping across Yemen — a country that has been crippled by war and has seen its health system collapse. More than 330,000 are affected — half of them children under age 15 — including more than 1,700 deaths from this highly contagious, yet preventable disease. Children who contract cholera suffer from severe vomiting and diarrhea, and can become dangerously dehydrated, as one father describes. Watch how UNICEF and partners are rushing to distribute life-saving medical supplies and provide other support to health centers across the country. Socotra, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean has been a secluded territory for decades. The island is about 250 kilometres from Somalia and approximately 340 kilometres from the mainland of Yemen. Presently it is a part of the Republic of Yemen and due to its harsh weather conditions every element on the island is distinctive in itself. It is believed that the name of the island originated from Sanskrit which means “blissful island.” It is often regarded as the “lost world” and houses some of the most unique flora and fauna found on this planet. It is believed that the group of islands got separated from the African Mainland about 6 or 7 million years ago. With more discoveries and exploration taking place, remarkable facts about this place has been revealed over the past couple of...

Even by Yemen's standards, the days leading up to the death of Ali Abdullah Saleh were turbulent and confusing. On Saturday, the ousted Yemeni President turned on the Houthi rebels he'd been backing for the past several years. He called for dialogue with Saudi Arabia - once his patron, more recently his enemy. On Monday, Saleh's former rebel allies ambushed and killed him. It's the latest development in a civil war that has pitted Yemen's internationally-recognized government led by Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi against Houthi rebels and Saleh's forces. Saleh's death only adds to the volatility surrounding a war that appears to have no end in sight; and a humanitarian crisis often described as the world's worst. So, will Saleh's death bring the conflict into a new, and even more violent, pha...

In the two years since the Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen's civil war, fighting has often spilled over the country's borders. Until now, that meant shelling of Saudi cities and villages close to the frontier. But the Houthi rebels who control the capital Sanaa, and much of the north of the country, have long threatened to take the war directly to Saudi Arabia. The group says it is now able to target major cities in Saudi Arabia and claims to have successfully hit a Saudi oil facility in the Red Sea port of Yanbu last week. US officials have confirmed the missile strike but the Saudi government denied it. The development is significant because Yanbu is more than 900km from the northern Yemeni province of Saada, from which the missile was launched. If Yanbu is within range of Ho...
Last year, Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a massive military campaign that overthrew the Yemeni government and sent the Arabian Peninsula into turmoil. Now, Saudi Arabia -- nervous about the insurrection near its southern border -- is trying to push the Houthis back with a ruthless bombing campaign. VICE returns to Yemen to witness one of the world's most bloody and underreported conflicts. While many Americans cheered the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage, the fight for equality is far from over. In many American states, it is still legally acceptable to refuse services, housing or employment to people because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Meeting with some of the families who are navigating this new landscape, and hearing from supporters of religio...
