The film (Sisters Across te Gulf of Finland)tells the story of the bond between the women's military auxiliary movements in Estonia and Finland, leading up to and during WWII and their subsequent disbandment and omission from popular history. The story is told by way of present day interviews with former members of the movement and rare archival footage from WWII. The interviews, pristine in appearance, provided personal time-filtered recollections of various elderly members compared to the grainy black and white archival footage which allowed for historical context and drove the narrative forward. They both act as windows to the past, one through the eyes, the window to the soul and the other through the lens of a camera.

Gulf of Finland
The Gulf of Finland (Finnish: Suomenlahti; Estonian: Soome laht; Russian: Фи́нский зали́в, tr. Finskiy zaliv; IPA: [ˈfʲinskʲɪj zɐˈlʲif]; Swedish: Finska viken) is the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea. It extends between Finland (to the north) and Estonia (to the south) all the way to Saint Petersburg in Russia, where the river Neva drains into it. Other major cities around the gulf include Helsinki and Tallinn. The eastern parts of the Gulf of Finland belong to Russia, and some of Russia's most important oil harbours are located farthest in, near Saint Petersburg (including Primorsk). As the seaway to Saint Petersburg, the Gulf of Finland has been and continues to be of considerable strategic importance to Russia. Some of the environmental problems affecting the Baltic Sea are at their most pronounced in the shallow gulf.

Finland (
i/ˈfɪnlənd/; Finnish: Suomi [suomi]; Swedish: Finland [ˈfɪnland]), officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, a peninsula with Gulf of Finland to the south and Gulf of Bothnia to the west. It has land borders with Sweden and Norway to the north and Russia to the east. Finland is part of the geographic region of Fennoscandia, which also includes Scandinavia and parts of Russia.
Finland's population is 5.5 million (2014), staying roughly on the same level with only about 9% increase in 24 years since the last economic depression in 1990. The majority live in the southern regions. The single largest group of foreigners living in Finland are Russians and Estonians, 36% of all of the foreigners (2014). In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital Helsinki, local governments in 317 municipalities, and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands. Over 1.4 million people live in the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which produces a third of the country's GDP. Other large cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, and Kuopio.

Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean, enclosed by Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic countries, and the North European Plain. It includes the Gulf of Bothnia, the Bay of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga, and the Bay of Gdańsk. The sea stretches from 53°N to 66°N latitude and from 10°E to 30°E longitude. A mediterranean sea of the Atlantic, with limited water exchange between the two bodies, the Baltic Sea drains through the Danish islands into the Kattegat by way of the straits of Øresund, the Great Belt, and the Little Belt.
The Baltic Proper is bordered on its northern edge, at the latitude 60°N, by the Åland islands and the Gulf of Bothnia, on its northeastern edge by the Gulf of Finland, on its eastern edge by the Gulf of Riga, and in the West by the South-Swedish part of the Scandinavian Peninsula.
The Baltic Sea is connected by artificial waterways to the White Sea via the White Sea Canal and to the German Bight of the North Sea via the Kiel Canal.

The film (Sisters Across te Gulf of Finland)tells the story of the bond between the women's military auxiliary movements in Estonia and Finland, leading up to and during WWII and their subsequent disbandment and omission from popular history. The story is told by way of present day interviews with former members of the movement and rare archival footage from WWII. The interviews, pristine in appearance, provided personal time-filtered recollections of various elderly members compared to the grainy black and white archival footage which allowed for historical context and drove the narrative forward. They both act as windows to the past, one through the eyes, the window to the soul and the other through the lens of a camera.

The majority of the population is concentrated in the southern region.[9] In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union.
Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital Helsinki, local governments in 317 municipalities,[10] and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands. Over 1.4 million people live in the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which produces a third of the country's GDP. From the late 12th century, Finland was an integral part of Sweden, a legacy reflected in the prevalence of the Swedish language and its official status. In the spirit of the notion of Adolf Ivar Arwidsson (1791–1858), "we are no-longer Swedes, we do not want to become Russians, let us therefore be Finns", the Finnish national identity started to establish. Nevertheless, in 1809, Finland was incorporated into the Russian Empire as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. In 1906, Finland became the second nation in the world to give the right to vote to all adult citizens and the first in the world to give all adult citizens the right to run for public office.[11][12] Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, Finland declared itself independent.
In 1918, the fledgling state was divided by civil war, with the Bolshevik-leaning "Reds" supported by the equally new Soviet Union, fighting the "Whites", supported by the German Empire. During World War II, the Soviet Union sought repeatedly to occupy Finland, with Finland losing parts of Karelia, Salla and Kuusamo, Petsamo and some islands, but retaining independence. Finland joined the United Nations in 1955 and established an official policy of neutrality. The Finno-Soviet Treaty of 1948 gave the Soviet Union some leverage in Finnish domestic politics during the Cold War era. Finland joined the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 1969, the NATO Partnership for Peace on 1994,[13] the European Union in 1995, the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997,[13] and finally the Eurozone at its inception, in 1999.
Finland was a relative latecomer to industrialization, remaining a largely agrarian country until the 1950s. The oldest part of central Helsinki is Senate Square and its surroundings.
The square is dominated by the Lutheran Cathedral a distinctive landmark in the cityscape.
In the center of the square is located a Statue of Emperor Alexander II.
He initiated several reforms increasing Finland’s autonomy.
Other important buildings are the main house of University of Helsinki.
The oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available.

Uspenski Cathedral is the largest orthodox church in Western Europe. With its golden domes and red brick facade is a characteristic point of the city.

Oil Combatting in the Gulf of Finland
This video highlights the bilateral oil combating exercise in ice conditions in the Eastern part of the Gulf of Finland in 2002. This Exercise carried out by Russian and Finnish oil combating authorities is attached to the WINOIL project webb page to illustrate the difficult ice conditions to be met if an oil spill will take place in the presence of ice. Video also describes the standard risk control options to improve the maritime safet,y and describes some of the latest developments in the ice breaker design: the oblique ice breaker under construction today is also touched in this video by model tests and detailed description by one of the Finnish top experts.

Moscow to Prague a great holiday
A 23 day trip starting in Moscow and ending in Prague. Travelling from Moscow to Saint Petersburg then over the border to Estonia stopping at Tallinn on the Gulf of Finland - its only 60km to Finland. Riga in Latvia was the next 2 night stop. On to Vilnius in Lithuania for 2 nights. Next 2 night stay was Warsaw in Poland then still in Poland to Krakow. Auschwitz visit was very moving. The salt mines were visited. It is bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, Russia to the east, and Estonia to the south across the Gulf of Finland.
5.4 million people live in Finland (end of 2012), with the majority concentrated in its southern regions.[7] In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Politically, it is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital of Helsinki, local governments in 336 municipalities[8][9] and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands (making Finland a federacy). About one million residents live in the Greater Helsinki area (consisting of Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, and Vantaa) and a third of the country's GDP is produced there. Other larger cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, and Kuopio.
From the 12th until the start of the 19th century, Finland was a part of Sweden. It then became an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire until the Russian Revolution. This prompted the Finnish Declaration of Independence, which was followed by a civil war where the pro-Bolshevik "Reds" were defeated by the pro-conservative "Whites" with support from the German Empire. After a brief attempt to establish a monarchy in the country, Finland became a republic. Finland's experience of World War II involved three separate conflicts: the Winter War (1939--1940) and Continuation War (1941--1944) against the Soviet Union and the Lapland War (1944--1945) against Nazi Germany. Following the end of the war, Finland joined the United Nations in 1955, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 1969, the European Union in 1995, and the eurozone at its inception in 1999. During this time, it built an extensive Nordic-style welfare state.

Finland (Listeni/ˈfɪnlənd/; About this sound Finnish: Suomi (help·info); Swedish: Finland), officially the Republic of Finland,[6] is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, Russia to the east, and Estonia to the south across the Gulf of Finland.
5.4 million people live in Finland (end of 2012), with the majority concentrated in its southern regions.[7] In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Politically, it is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital of Helsinki, local governments in 336 municipalities[8][9] and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands (making Finland a federacy). About one million residents live in the Greater Helsinki area (consisting of Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, and Vantaa) and a third of the country's GDP is produced there. Other larger cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, and Kuopio.
From the 12th until the start of the 19th century, Finland was a part of Sweden. It then became an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire until the Russian Revolution. This prompted the Finnish Declaration of Independence, which was followed by a civil war where the pro-Bolshevik "Reds" were defeated by the pro-conservative "Whites" with support from the German Empire. After a brief attempt to establish a monarchy in the country, Finland became a republic. Last year I talked to Irish Historian Bernard Kelly about his book “Military Internees, Prisoners of War and the Irish State during the Second World War”, thats episode 23 for those who haven’t listened. We discussed how the Republic of Ireland walked the tightrope of neutrality and how it treated troops of belligerent nations who found themselves within its borders.. Chatting with Bernard after that recording I discovered his MA thesis looked at the Russia’s Winter War with Finland. Yet another interesting WW2 topic and that's what we’ll be discussing in this episode.
In November 1939 Russia attacked Finland, Britain and France were already at war with Germany and were not keen on declaring war on Russia in the defence of Finland. More importantly a total collapse of Finland might mean a Russian threaten Sweden and Norway?
Also throw into the mix that Swedish iron was vital to the German war effort it meant the Allies needed to do something, but what?

In the mid 60s the site of the future city was built up by major industrial parks and enterprises manufacturing defensive instruments and radioelectronic equipment, which served as a base for establishing a closed administrative-territorial unit. The city became an important scientific and industrial center.
The closed unit status was lifted in 1994.
