Arctic Ocean
The Arctic Ocean (also known as the Northern Ocean), located in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Arctic north polar region, is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceanic divisions. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) recognizes it as an ocean, although some oceanographers call it the Arctic Mediterranean Sea or simply the Arctic Sea, classifying it a mediterranean sea or an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, the Arctic Ocean can be seen as the northernmost part of the all-encompassing World Ocean.
Almost completely surrounded by Eurasia and North America, the Arctic Ocean is partly covered by sea ice throughout the year (and almost completely in winter). The Arctic Ocean's surface temperature and salinity vary seasonally as the ice cover melts and freezes; its salinity is the lowest on average of the five major oceans, due to low evaporation, heavy fresh water inflow from rivers and streams, and limited connection and outflow to surrounding oceanic waters with higher salinities. The summer shrinking of the ice has been quoted at 50%. The US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) uses satellite data to provide a daily record of Arctic sea ice cover and the rate of melting compared to an average period and specific past years.

Ocean
An ocean (from Ancient Greek Ὠκεανός, transc. Okeanós, the sea of classical antiquity) is a body of saline water that composes much of a planet's hydrosphere. On Earth, an ocean is one of the major conventional divisions of the World Ocean, which covers almost 71% of its surface. These are, in descending order by area, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans. The word sea is often used interchangeably with "ocean" in American English but, strictly speaking, a sea is a body of saline water (generally a division of the world ocean) partly or fully enclosed by land.
Saline water covers approximately 72% of the planet's surface (~3.6×108 km2) and is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas, with the ocean covering approximately 71% of Earth's surface. The ocean contains 97% of Earth's water, and oceanographers have stated that less than 5% of the World Ocean has been explored. The total volume is approximately 1.35 billion cubic kilometers (320 million cu mi) with an average depth of nearly 3,700 meters (12,100 ft).

Arctic
The Arctic (/ˈɑːrktɪk/ or /ˈɑːrtɪk/) is a polar region located at the northernmost part of the Earth. The Arctic consists of the Arctic Ocean and parts of Alaska (United States), Canada, Finland, Greenland (Denmark), Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden. The Arctic region consists of a vast ocean with a seasonally varying ice cover, surrounded by treeless permafrost. The area can be defined as north of the Arctic Circle (66° 33'N), the approximate limit of the midnight sun and the polar night. Alternatively, it can be defined as the region where the average temperature for the warmest month (July) is below 10 °C (50 °F); the northernmost tree line roughly follows the isotherm at the boundary of this region.
Socially and politically, the Arctic region includes the northern territories of the eight Arctic states, although by natural science definitions, much of this territory is considered subarctic. The Arctic region is a unique area among Earth's ecosystems. For example, the cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold and extreme conditions. In recent years, the extent of the sea ice has declined. Life in the Arctic includes organisms living in the ice, zooplankton and phytoplankton, fish and marine mammals, birds, land animals, plants and human societies.

Ludovico Einaudi
Ludovico Einaudi OMRI (Italian: [ludoˈviːko eiˈnaudi]; born 23 November 1955) is an Italian pianist and composer. He trained at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan and under composer Luciano Berio in the early 1980s. Einaudi began his career as a classical composer, and soon began incorporating other styles and genres—including pop, rock, world music, and folk music.
Einaudi composed the scores for a number of films and trailers, including The Intouchables and I'm Still Here, the TV miniseries Doctor Zhivago, and Acquario in 1996, for which he won the Grolla d'oro for best soundtrack. He has also released a number of solo albums of piano and orchestra, notably I Giorni in 2001, Nightbook in 2009, and In a Time Lapse in 2013. Taranta Project, a collaborative album, was released in May 2015, and Elements was released in October 2015.
Early life and education
Einaudi was born in Turin, Italy. His father, Giulio Einaudi, was a publisher working with authors like Italo Calvino and Primo Levi, and his grandfather, Luigi Einaudi, was President of Italy between 1948 and 1955. His mother played the piano to him as a child. He started composing his own music as a teenager, first writing by playing a folk guitar.

Einaudi performed one of his own compositions on a floating platform in the middle of the Ocean, against the backdrop of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier (in Svalbard, Norway). For five months in 2015, a team of researchers drifted with polar ice, their ship tethered to an ice floe as they collected data to help them better understand how the loss of sea ice will affect the planet. The air above the Arctic Ocean has warmed on average about 5°F in the past century—more than twice the global average—and sea ice covers less and less of it. Most researchers study the ice during the summer. This team, battling bone-chilling cold, tracked it from when it formed in winter until it started melting in spring. And occasionally found time to kick a soccer ball around the floe.

Russia: Expedition proves possibility of river travel between Pacific and Arctic Oceans
Participants of the 'Pole of Cold Connects the Oceans' project organised by the Russian Geographical Society arrived in Russkoye Ustye on August 5, as shown by footage released on Thursday. Their epic river expedition empirically proved the existence of an internal waterway between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. The expedition, headed by Nikolai Nakhodkin, started from Okhotsk in the Khabarovsk Territory in July. It comprised 16 members who rafted on inflatable boats along waterways that run between the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic. The Arctic is an icy world surrounding the North Pole and a strange and wonderful world of ice, snow, land and water. To experience this region we travel by ship. Soon everyone is on board and our adventure can begin. The route leads north along the coast which is separated by deep fjords. We arrive at Kongsfjorden, our first Spitsbergen destination with the 14th July Glacier cloaked in fog. To the rear, steep scree slopes and sheer rock walls and, in front, a glacier breaks off into the Arctic Ocean. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. Coal mining was the basis of the settlement and many people came to this desolate place. Later, the extraction of coal became unprofitable and it was virtually abandoned. A harp seal flees from its ice floe in the Arctic Sea and soon a group of hungry polar bears hunt it down. Polar bears have sensitive hearing and an excellent sense of smell and are able to scent seals up to a kilometre away. They can also track prey beneath a one metre thick sheet of snow and ice. One glacial valley after another opens up into the passage between Spitsbergen and Edgeøya. The captain navigates the ship between large ice floes that gradually become icebergs. The icy world of the Arctic is a habitat for rare wildlife, bizarre landscapes and great explorers. A realm of freezing cold, the largest wilderness on Earth, and one of its last natural paradises!

Our ship, the Plancius, was originally the oceanographic research ship of the Dutch monarchy. In Zodiacs - robust inflatable boats - we get our first real sense of the Arctic Ocean. We travel alongside the 14th of July Glacier while the boatman skilfully manoeuvres between fragments of floating icebergs. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. This area was mined until 1963 and a coal train once led to a loading station on the nearby shore. The journey through the Liefdefjorden is part of every trip to the Arctic. Several glaciers form the typical landscape. Sixty per cent of the island is covered with ice, thick accumulations of both snow and ice that slowly move to the coast by their own weight. Polar bears wait in ambush and surprise their prey. Seals and whales must surface in order to breathe: it is then that the white giants attack. We head south again, leaving the pack ice behind and now our next experience, the sight of Humpback Whales. The voyage takes us past the Bråsvellbreen Glacier whose snow-white front impressively demonstrates the incredible power of this world of ice. Ice falls can create a dangerous current for ships, and the passage between the islands can be quite hazardous. The icy world of the Arctic is a habitat for rare wildlife, bizarre landscapes and great explorers. A realm of ice and the largest wilderness on Earth!

Antarctica is a land of extremes: it is the coldest and driest continent on Earth and has the highest average elevation. As the fifth largest continent in the world, Antartica is also the most Southern, overlying the "South Pole". Scarcely touched by humans, the frozen land boasts breathtaking scenery, broken by only a handful of scientific bases and a "permanent" population of scientists numbering only a few thousand. Visitors to Antarctica generally must brave rough sea crossings aboard ice-strengthened vessels, but those who do are rewarded with amazing scenery and tremendous and unique wildlife.
Destinations
=============
The primary destinations for those visiting Antarctica will either be a research base (for those working on the frozen continent) or the Antarctic Peninsula or Ross Sea area (for those visiting by ship). Other destinations are reachable only by those blessed with extreme motivation and (most importantly) funding.
South Pole — needs no introduction
Southern pole of inaccessibility — the furthest place in Antarctica from the Southern Sea (in other words the hardest place to get to in the world), home to an abandoned Soviet station, which although covered by snow, still bears a visible gold Lenin bust sprouting from the snow and facing Moscow (if you can find a way inside the building, then there's a golden visitor book to sign)
Mount Erebus — world's southernmost active volcano, on Ross Island right next to ~Mount Terror!~
Anver Island / Anvord Bay — if any part of Antarctica is "touristy," this is it, home to Palmer Station (U.S.), the museum at Port Lockroy, Cuverville Island, and the only two cruise ship stops on the continent: Paradise Bay and Neko Harbor
South Shetland Islands — another set of major attractions on the Antarctic Peninsula cruise ship circuit, including: penguins and hot springs at Deception Island, Hannah Point, Half Moon Island, Aitcho Islands, Artigas Base (Uruguay), and the ever friendly Polish researchers at Arctowski Station
McMurdo Sound — McMurdo Station (USA) and Scott Base (New Zealand) on the mainland near Ross Island
Mawson's Huts — the small encampment of Sir Douglas Mawson's ill-fated Australian Antarctic Expedition, of which he was the sole survivor, at Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay

In English Bay a giant metal crab guards the planetarium and by aquabus our journey travels across False Creek to Science World with its marvellous glass globe that contains a museum of modern art. Ketchikan is a small town located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and timber but today relies upon tourism. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. In 1880, Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and their Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began. Glacier Bay was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the Little Ice Age. The ice melted and the ever-changing glaciers are today situated within the arms of the bay which stretches almost a hundred kilometres to the north. Barrow is the northernmost point of inhabited North America and five hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in the arctic wastelands are extremely harsh and most of the year it is bone-chillingly cold. Even today the promise of untamed nature and boundless freedom attracts us to America’s final wilderness. Alaska is full of wild extremes and stark contrasts, a fascinating land of pure adventure!

Participants of the 'Pole of Cold Connects the Oceans' project organised by the Russian Geographical Society arrived in Russkoye Ustye on August 5, as shown by footage released on Thursday. Their epic river expedition empirically proved the existence of an internal waterway between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans.
The expedition, headed by Nikolai Nakhodkin, started from Okhotsk in the Khabarovsk Territory in July. It comprised 16 members who rafted on inflatable boats along waterways that run between the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic. In total, the scientists and crew members covered about 2,800 kilometres (1,739 miles), finishing the route in the little village of Ustye, near the Arctic coast. Nakhodkin said “we have reached the Arctic Ocean coast. We were first to discover a river way from the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic.”
Before that only local people used such routes and there was no scientific proof of the possibility of travelling by water between the two oceans.
During the expedition, different scientific tests were conducted including archaeological research on the site of Zashiversk, an abandoned 19th century city. Scientists also installed a special device at the point of bifurcation of the Delkyu River to measure the temperature at one metre below zero depth to help record events related to climate change in Yakutia.
SOT, Nikolai Nakhodkin, head of the expedition (Russian): "The road was very difficult. In the upper reaches, the river is very tortuous. In the most upper reaches, it sometimes goes under stones and there is a very small runlet left and it spreads on ice-slicks."

Before that only local people used such routes and there was no scientific proof of the possibility of travelling by water between the two oceans.
During the expedition, different scientific tests were conducted including archaeological research on the site of Zashiversk, an abandoned 19th century city. Scientists also installed a special device at the point of bifurcation of the Delkyu River to measure the temperature at one metre below zero depth to help record events related to climate change in Yakutia.
SOT, Nikolai Nakhodkin, head of the expedition (Russian): "The road was very difficult. In the upper reaches, the river is very tortuous. In the most upper reaches, it sometimes goes under stones and there is a very small runlet left and it spreads on ice-slicks."

Welcome to Greenland.
We're here on the Greenland Explorer withQuark Expeditions and we're joined by the Expedition Leader, Alex McNeil.
Can you just run us through what maybe 24
hours might be like on the ship here?
An average day for me would probably be waking
up around 5 O'clock, and heading to the bridge
looking at local conditions, ice weather,
current, assessing our progress, towards our
proposed destination and looking for any opportunities
along the way.
And the essentially we have a time where we
plan to wake the passengers up.
Usually anywhere from 5:30 to 7:30 at the
latest, sometimes we give people a little
bit of a sleep in.
Then we go out on a morning excursion for
sure, for example, this morning we had a zodiac
cruise and a landing, the tide just got out,
we had a really good extended hike, and we're
going to assess opportunities.
Ready for a great day on the water!
Ship cruise the entirety of the Fjord, it's
about 60 miles
Picturesque jagged peaks, glaciers, that will
be great regardless, and who knows what opportunities
will present for zodiac cruises and other
adventures.
I forgot one thing, we're gonna get you to
jump in the water at some point too.
Oh,
Because we're back in the ice, and we've got
a little bit colder water, so it's time for
a polar plunge.
I like that, it's a little bit colder water.
We want it to be as cold as possible so people
can get the true feeling of the Polar Plunge.
If you go on a Quark Expedition Ship, make
sure to do the polar plunge, whether it's
in the Antarctic or it's up here in Greenland,
do it!

is a harbour filled with ice bergs that come
from Jacobs Glacier.

all the way to Canada.

It's the spirit of adventure,
You never know what's going to happen and
that's what great about the Arctic.
It's just adventure around every corner.

The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is the deepest known point in Earth's oceans. In 2010 the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping measured the depth of the Challenger Deep at 10,994 meters (36,070 feet) below sea level with an estimated vertical accuracy of ± 40 meters. If Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, were placed at this location it would be covered by over one mile of water.
The first depth measurements in the Mariana Trench were made by the British survey ship HMS Challenger, which was used by the Royal Navy in 1875 to conduct research in the trench. The greatest depth that they recorded at that time was 8,184 meters (26,850 feet).
In 1951, another Royal Navy vessel, also named the "HMS Challenger," returned to the area for additional measurements. They discovered an even deeper location with a depth of 10,900 meters (35,760 feet) determined by echo sounding. The Challenger Deep was named after the Royal Navy vessel that made these measurements.
In 2009, sonar mapping done by researchers aboard the RV Kilo Moana, operated by the University of Hawaii, determined the depth to be 10,971 meters (35,994 feet) with a potential error of ± 22 meters. The most recent measurement, done in 2010, is the 10,994 meter ( ± 40 meter accuracy) depth reported at the top of this article, measured by the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping.

Just over a thousand sea lions live and breed in the Seal Bay Conservation Park, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Kangaroo Island. The state’s coastline stretches for more than 3,000 miles, and after a flight of just 40 minutes from Adelaide the mighty Eyre Peninsula awaits.

The Barossa is world-renowned for its red wine, and over 150 wineries lie within an hour’s drive from Adelaide. But the Barossa is not only home to wine. It’s one of the world’s top culinary destinations.
The vibrancy of South Australia doesn’t end in Barossa. Follow the Stuart Highway north, beyond the hills and the vineyards of the Clare Valley to where green turns to red and the Outback begins.

Rawnsley Park Station is a working farm that has managed to find a way to blend sheep farming and tourism. The owners provide scenic flights over the spectacular geological formation, Wilpena Pound.
Wilpena Pound is an ancient valley floor amidst mountains that have been eroded over hundreds of millions of years. Its golden walls are formed of highly resistant quartzite and sandstone. The area is protected from mining and most human impact other than tourism. Nowadays, 4x4s can be seen roaming along the ridgetops that command spectacular views of the timeless landscape.
Life can nevertheless be found all over the northern reaches of South Australia. The emu is a large, flightless bird, endemic to Australia and a close relation of the ostrich. Its long legs allow it to reach speeds of up to 30 miles an hour. It has become an iconic image of Australia.

Got into Tuktoyaktuk around 12:30. Visited the underground Community Ice House made of Permafrost http://twitpic.com/caiylq.
Made it back to Inuvik just after supper time. Was a great day with a great guide who was born & raised in the area.

Just half an hour north of the international airport is Corralejo, one of the island’s largest resort towns and the perfect place from which to explore the Corralejo Dunes National Park.
At the island’s southern end is Morro Jable, a town famed for seafood restaurants and a picturesque lighthouse.
Gorgeous beaches run the length of the Jandia Peninsula, reaching all the way to Costa Calma. For something different, check out the pitch-black sands of Ajuy Beach.
Should you tire of Fuerteventura’s beaches, head inland to explore the island’s amazing volcanic landscapes and villages. Take the winding roads up to Mirador Morro Velosa on Mount Tegu for the best views on the entire island, then visit Puerto del Rosario, the island’s capital.
With it’s long Spanish history, Fuerteventura is also home to many romantic buildings and churches such as the parish church at La Oliva and the town hall in Pajara.
Cotillo is perhaps the most picturesque village on the entire island. Stroll the old harbour, which is still used by fisherman, and admire the original windmills.
In an archipelago acclaimed for beaches, Fuerteventura has been blessed with some of the biggest and most beautiful. Combined with its perfect weather and incredible landscapes, this is the perfect island to relax, recharge and reconnect with nature.
