Today’s episode is about Classical period music, and since there’s so much to talk about, I’ve decided to split this into two videos. Honestly this subject is so dense and interesting that we could talk about it for hours and hours, but the focus today is to get a general idea of the period, an overview. Recently I did a two-parter video on Baroque period music, so if you like this video, you’ll probably dig that one as well. The Classical period happened right after the Baroque period, so I’m attempting to keep it linear. The final lecture video about the Classical Period of music (1750-1820.) This video focuses on the three major composers of the period: Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 28 in A major, Op. 101, was written in 1816 and was dedicated to the pianist Baroness Dorothea Ertmann, née Graumen. This sonata brings us into what is generally regarde as Beethoven's final period, where the forms are more complex, ideas more wide-ranging, textures more polyphonic, and the treatment of the themes and motifs even more sophisticated than before. Op.101 well exemplified this new style, and Beethoven exploits the newly expanded keyboard compass of the day. This piano sonata runs consists of four movements: 1. Etwas lebhaft und mit der innigsten Empfindung. (Somewhat lively and with innermost sensibility.) Allegretto ma non troppo 2. Lebhaft, marschmäßig. (Lively, march-like.) Vivace alla marcia 3. Langsam und sehnsuchtsvoll. (Slow and...

This isolated him from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his life, when he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". At the time of his death, aged 77, he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. Joseph Haydn was the brother of Michael Haydn -- himself a highly regarde...
