    As Umeya Rice Cake Co. closes, an era ends in Little Tokyo :-( Generations of our family have eaten their senbei for years. So sad to see the mom/pop businesses started by the Issei now closing.

    This is what remains of the federal prison camp near Tucson, AZ where Gordon Hirabayashi carried out a portion of his sentence during WWII. Hirabayashi called his time here "truly inspiring” and became even more resolved to live by his pacifist values and uphold the Constitution.

    Wallace Tashima, the federal judge who blocked Arizona from banning Mexican American studies was incarcerated at Poston concentration camp as a child and was the first Japanese American appointed to US Court of Appeals. h/t
