A radio clock or radio-controlled clock (RCC) is a clock that is automatically synchronized by a time code transmitted by a radio transmitter connected to a time standard such as an atomic clock. Such a clock may be synchronized to the time sent by a single transmitter, such as many national or regional time transmitters, or may use multiple transmitters, like the Global Positioning System. Such systems may be used to automatically set clocks or for any purpose where accurate time is needed.
One common style of radio-controlled clock uses time signals transmitted by dedicated terrestrial longwave radio transmitters, which emit a time code that can be demodulated and displayed by the radio controlled clock. The radio controlled clock will contain an accurate time base oscillator to maintain timekeeping if the radio signal is momentarily unavailable. Other radio controlled clocks use the time signals transmitted by dedicated transmitters in the shortwave bands. Systems using dedicated time signal stations can achieve accuracy of a few tens of milliseconds.
Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad. When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.
Radio is the use of radio waves is to carry information, such as sound, by systematically modulating some property of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.
Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate (change) some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it, for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation (which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation). Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves, and vice versa. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form usable for the consumer, such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum.
A clock is an instrument to indicate, keep, and co-ordinate time. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". A silent instrument missing such a striking mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece. In general usage today a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time. Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are often distinguished from clocks.
The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to consistently measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units: the day, the lunar month, and the year. Devices operating on several physical processes have been used over the millennia. A sundial shows the time by displaying the position of a shadow on a flat surface. There are a range of duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass. Water clocks, along with the sundials, are possibly the oldest time-measuring instruments. A major advance occurred in Europe around 1300 with the invention of the escapement, which allowed construction of the first mechanical clocks, which used oscillating timekeepers like balance wheels. Spring-driven clocks appeared during the 15th century. During the 15th and 16th centuries, clockmaking flourished. The next development in accuracy occurred after 1656 with the invention of the pendulum clock. A major stimulus to improving the accuracy and reliability of clocks was the importance of precise time-keeping for navigation. The electric clock was patented in 1840. The development of electronics in the 20th century led to clocks with no clockwork parts at all.
An alarm clock (or sometimes just an alarm) is a clock that is designed to make a sound, or some other signal, at a specific time. The primary utility of these clocks is to awaken people from their night's sleep or short naps; they are sometimes used for other reminders as well. Most use sound; some use light or vibration. Some have sensors to identify when a person is in a light stage of sleep, in order to avoid waking someone who is deeply asleep, which causes tiredness, even if the person has had adequate sleep. To stop the sound or light, a button or handle on the clock is pressed; most clocks automatically stop the alarm if left unattended long enough. A classic analog alarm clock has an extra hand or inset dial that is used to specify the time at which to activate the alarm. Alarm clocks are also found on mobile phones and watches.
Traditional mechanical alarm clocks have one or two bells that ring by means of a mainspring that powers a gear to propel a hammer back and forth between the two bells or between the interior sides of a single bell. In some models, the back encasement of the clock itself acts as the bell. In an electric bell-style alarm clock, the bell is rung by an electromagnetic circuit and armature that turns the circuit on and off repeatedly.

This one's for the ladies! We begin in the Keeler homebrewery, where Jake is joined by his wife in the brewing of a Chocolate Milk Stout. How's the old saying go? "Give a woman a beer, please her for a day. Teach her to brew, please her for a lifetime..." Right? Then, BTV on the Radio. We visit Lisa Morrison aka The Beer Goddess during an episode of her craft beer radio show "Beer O'Clock" to get her input on women in craft beer and homebrewing. [Original postdate: August 27, 2010]

I have been cleaning up a video archive and came across video I shot in Ordfordness in 2003. It turns out to be topical because the BBC ceased using 648 kHz, which originated from a transmitter site there, as from Sunday March 27th 2011. I can confirm that my clock-radio needs retuning to something else to wake me up. Infact I ended up buying an excellent app for the iPad called Radio Alarm HD and mixing the output with another app called Retro-Fi. This video safari will never be shown on mainstream TV - it is designed for those of us in radio who enjoy the details of high-frequency engineering. This edition, therefore, assumes you're interested in what makes these places tick. I particularly like Ordfordness because of the history of the place - it is where radar experiments started duri...
I tell you what I saw yesterday. I will not be literal. It was after the annual wind-up animal toys race. I went home. And there it was, next to my bed, where I have left it: the wind-up chicken. I took a shower and got dressed. On the radio-alarm-clock I could see it was 4:30pm. A dog was barking, outside. Probably that old greyhound, Arnold is his name. I got out of the house to take a look. The dog was wearing one of those lamp-like collars around his neck, maybe to keep him from licking some wounds after an injury or surgery. The dog kept barking and directing his lamp-like head upwards. I tell you, a lot of things were happening up there in the sky. NOTE: This video was part of a contest organized by genero.tv for Moby. These clocks and clock/radio combination units are hot commodities on eBay, Etsy, Pinterest, and other places frequented by hipsters. Often, they don't run; this clock was no exception. It was also disgusting, and covered in 50 years of nicotine and smoke residue.
The digital flip clock on this Toshiba RC-803F is not operating so I disassemble it and restore the clock motor's operation.

Yes, I totally screwed up my discussion about GE's not including an E on the SNOOZ button. If you want a clock radio that can receive FM stereo and let you listen with headphones, this is one of a few choices you have. The much newer 7-4664A also makes a cameo appearance, as it has the same capabilities with an updated look and LED display. Please ignore the neighbor's idiotic dog as you listen to the radio demonstration. (And don't pay much attention to the background hum either. Perhaps this unit could use a visit from the capacitor fairy.)
I found this old unit in the trash. It is a York AM/FM Stereo clock radio, with a nice large VFD display. Problem is the display is so dim you can't see it. I had an old stock display tube from a totally different clock module kicking around in good shape (as the filament had been disconnected and only the chip was being used as a driver for a large display) so it was time to hack this clock board, and install a different display tube to restore this classic back to working condition. Note it even has a 1/4" standard headphone jack!
