Strega Nona read by Mary Steenburgen. Written and illustrated by Tomie dePaola. Strega Nona – “Grandma Witch” – is the source for potions, cures, magic and comfort in her Calabrian town. Her magical ever-full pasta pot is especially intriguing to hungry Big Anthony. He is supposed to look after her house and tend her garden, but one day, when she goes over the mountain to visit Strega Amelia, Big Anthony recites the magic verse over the pasta pot, with disastrous results. Here are three of my favorite scenes of the 1985 Disney film One Magic Christmas, starring Mary Steenburgen. The first scene is Ginny showering and then being locked out of her bathroom, the second is of her in her menial job at a grocery store, and the third is of her telling off her boss and being fired. I have this film recorded on a tape from 1988 and I watch it every year, though to be honest, it is a pretty bad movie. Just about everyone except Steenburgen give terrible performances, the Christmas angel acts like a pedophile and the way they portray Santa Claus as a god-like figure is really creepy. Mary Steenburgen and the old commercials are the only reason I watch it. Still, if you are a fan of Steenburgen like me, it may be worth a watch. However, I don't know if it has ever b...
