Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (/ˈtʃɑːrlz ˈlʌtwɪdʒ ˈdɒdsən/; 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll (/ˈkærəl/), was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.
Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, conservative and High Church Anglican. Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy. His great-grandfather, also named Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin. His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies. The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford. He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career. Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827 and became a country parson.

The Secret World is a massively multiplayer online role-playing video game set in a modern-day real world under attack from occult forces. Ragnar Tørnquist led development of the initial game for Funcom. The Secret World uses a subscription-optional, "buy-to-play" business model, requiring players only to buy the game with no additional subscription fees, with additional benefits to those members still paying a subscription.
In the game, the player's character joins one of three world-controlling secret societies attempting to repel, mitigate or exploit the attack of Lovecraftian entities and other immortal beings in coastal Maine, rural Egypt, Transylvania and a quarantined section of Tokyo; and advance their society's agenda over that of the others.
The game uses a contemporary setting, borrowing heavily from the horror fiction genre and folklore, with a fog-ringed, zombie-infested New England fishing village for the novice player, mummies and cultists in Egypt for the mid-level player, followed by vampires and werewolves in Transylvania and ghosts, robots, Oni demons and an interdimensional occult cancer in Tokyo. Mission content bleeds into player faction headquarters in London, Seoul, and the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, and into the game's transport network, along the subterranean branches of Yggdrasil in Agartha.

In 1856, Dodgson took up the new art form of photography, first under the influence of his uncle Skeffington Lutwidge, and later his Oxford friend Reginald Southey. He soon excelled at the art and became a well-known gentleman-photographer, and he seems even to have toyed with the idea of making a living out of it in his very early years. A recent study by Roger Taylor and Edward Wakeling exhaustively lists every surviving print, and Taylor calculates that just over fifty percent of his surviving work depicts young girls, though this may be a highly distorted figure as approximately 60% of his original photographic portfolio is now missing, so any firm conclusions are difficult. Dodgson also made many studies of men, women, male children and landscapes; his subjects also include skeletons...
Charles Dodgson, better known as the author Lewis Carroll, told a story to the sisters Alice, Lorina and Edith Liddell that was to develop into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Dodgson was a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College in Oxford University where, alongside his academic work, he also wrote poems and short stories that were published in national publications under his pseudonym. He became close friends with the family of Henry Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church, from 1856 and was known to take the children on rowing trips along the Thames. On 4 July the Reverend Robinson Duckworth joined Dodgson and the children for a trip along the river for a picnic in the village of Godstow. During the journey Dodgson entertained the three Liddell girls with a story about a girl ca...

A lovely poem by Carroll. Most of his poems are sort of humorously made - this not so. In iambic dimetres. Dreamland When midnight mists are creeping, And all the land is sleeping, Around me tread the mighty dead, And slowly pass away. Lo, warriors, saints, and sages, From out the vanished ages, With solemn pace and reverend face Appear and pass away. The blaze of noonday splendour, The twilight soft and tender, May charm the eye: yet they shall die, Shall die and pass away. But here, in Dreamland's centre, No spoiler's hand may enter, These visions fair, this radiance rare, Shall never pass away. I see the shadows falling, The forms of old recalling; Around me tread the mighty dead, And slowly pass away.

Dreamchild is a 1985 British drama directed by Gavin Millar. It's a fictionalized account of Alice Liddell, the child who inspired Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". The story is told from the point of view of the elderly Alice as she travels to the United States to receive an honorary degree from Columbia University celebrating the centenary of Lewis Carroll's birth. The film evolves from the factual to the hallucinatory as Alice revisits her memories of the Reverend Charles Dodgson while in her immediate present in the unruly wonderland of Depression-era New York. In this scene, when Alice is left alone in her hotel room, she begins to hallucinate and sees Mr. Dodgson [played by Ian Holm], and then, later, the Mad Hatter and March Hare. Joining them for their insane te...

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll. Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children. Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear. Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856 Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour. Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell. An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Such a poem can be found at the end of Through...

a slideshow of the real Alice in Wonderland, Alice Pleasance Liddell Hargreaves. except for two or three, all photos in this slideshow were taken by Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson, whose pen-name was Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. Alot has been said about Alice's lack of expression in the photographs. The actual reason for this is simple. Charles Dodgson used the wet collodian process of photography.this process required that the subject remain absolutely still for a period of 10 to 45 seconds, sometimes longer. Any movement in her expression could result in the subject's face blurring in the final image. It is difficult for an adult to hold a natural looking smile for this long, let alone a child.

More details about the book: Written in a series of quick, curious moments, THE IMAGINATION OF LEWIS CARROLL is a fabulist biography that eschews sense for nonsense and accuracy for truth. A logic instructor at Christ College, Lewis Carroll was a man who tied knots in words and stared at chessboards, a man who stammered before adults and soared in front of children, a man who lived in a world that was not our own. But Carroll didn't live in Wonderland or the Looking Glass—he lived in a world far more ...

Alice's Adventures Underground Lewis CARROLL (1832 - 1898) This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was generously illustrated by Carrol and meant to entertain his family and friends. When a sick child in a hospital enjoyed it so much, the mother wrote him saying it had distracted her for a bit from her pain and led eventually to Carroll expanding the story.
