Irlam railway station is in Irlam, Greater Manchester, England. The station is 8 3⁄4 miles (14.1 km) west of Manchester Oxford Road on the Manchester to Liverpool Line and is operated by Northern Rail.
The original station, named Irlam, was opened by the Cheshire Lines Committee on 2 September 1873, on their route between Manchester Central and Liverpool Central. The station was renamed Irlam and Cadishead on 1 August 1879.
The construction of the Manchester Ship Canal (which opened on 1 January 1894) required the railway line to be raised in order to provide clearance for shipping, so a new line was built parallel but at a higher level. The new line was used by goods trains from 9 January 1893, and on 26 March 1893 passenger trains were also transferred to the deviation, the original station being closed and replaced by the present station.
In August 1954, the station was renamed Irlam for Cadishead, reverting to Irlam on 6 May 1974.
The station is unstaffed, despite being used by over 250,000 passengers a year. The next station on the line (Flixton) is at least partially staffed although its usage is much less.
A train station, railway station, railroad station, or depot (see below) is a railway facility where trains regularly stop to load or unload passengers or freight.
It generally consists of at least one track-side platform and a station building (depot) providing such ancillary services as ticket sales and waiting rooms. If a station is on a single-track line, it often has a passing loop to facilitate traffic movements. The smallest stations are most often referred to as "stops" or, in some parts of the world, as "halts" (flag stops).
Stations may be at ground level, underground, or elevated. Connections may be available to intersecting rail lines or other transport modes such as buses, trams or other rapid transit systems.
In the United States, the most common term in contemporary usage is train station. Railway station and railroad station are less frequent; also, American usage makes a distinction between the terms railroad and railway.
In Britain and other Commonwealth countries, traditional usage favours railway station or simply station, even though train station, which is often perceived as an Americanism, is now about as common as railway station in writing; railroad station is not used, railroad being obsolete there. In British usage, the word station is commonly understood to mean a railway station unless otherwise qualified.

Irlam is a suburb of Salford in Greater Manchester, England. Historically in Lancashire, in 2001 it had a population of 18,504, increasing to 19,933 at the 2011 Census. It lies on flat ground on the south side of the M62 motorway and the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal, and is 6.7 miles (10.8 km) west-southwest of Salford, 7.6 miles (12.2 km) west-southwest of Manchester and 8.3 miles (13.4 km) east-northeast of Warrington. Irlam forms a continuous urban area with Cadishead to the southwest, and is divided from Flixton and the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford to the southeast by the Manchester Ship Canal. The main road through Irlam linking it to Cadishead and Eccles is the A57. For train services, Irlam railway station serves the district.
Irlam was anciently known as Irwellham, and was an outlying area of Chat Moss, a large peat bog which straddled the River Irwell. Work was carried out during the 19th century to reclaim large areas of Chat Moss to enable the completion of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1829. In 1894 the Irwell was adjusted so that its waters were united with the Manchester Ship Canal, stimulating the growth of Irlam as an inland port. Irlam Urban District was established in the same year and was governed thereafter by its own district council until its abolition in 1974.
The East Midlands is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of NUTS for statistical purposes. The eastern part of the Midlands, the region consists of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, most of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.
The region has an area of 15,627 km² (6,033 sq mi), and is home to over 4.5 million people (2011). East Midlands contains four cities: Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham, though other major settlements include Boston, Loughborough, Mansfield, Northampton and Skegness. Its proximity to London and connections to several national motorways have led to the East Midlands becoming an economic hub. It is also the location of the East Midlands Airport.
The highest point in the region is Kinder Scout in the Peak District near Glossop, at 2,088 ft (636 m). The centre of the East Midlands area lies roughly between Bingham and Bottesford. The geographical centre of England lies in Higham on the Hill in west Leicestershire, close to the boundary between the East and West Midlands. 88% of the land is rural, although agriculture accounts for less than three percent of the region's jobs. All of the coastline within the region falls within Lincolnshire.

Train Service From Manchester Oxford Road To Liverpool Lime Street Calling At Irlam
This station was a bit of a surprise. Although I was born and brought up just 7 miles from here, I had never been to this station. Whilst the main station is a tidy unmanned halt, the original station buildings have been impressively renovated. Today they trade as a pub but there are many interesting features of railway memorabilia on the platform including old signs, porters trolleys and milk churns. Whilst at the station there were Northern, First TransPennine and East Midlands DMUs passing and calling.
A visit to a friend in Irlam Manchester to see the old station and take a look at his model railway he is working on since recently retiring . The station has been renovated to a very high standard .

Glazebrook is a small station which serves Glazebrook and Culcheth, two villages near Warrington. Glazebrook station used to be an important junction with lines to St Helens and Wigan branching off here. Today it is a shadow of it's former self, with the station buildings semi derelict and nothing like that of Irlam station, two miles away.Whilst at the station, there was an interesting selection of diesel multiple units passing.
On the way to Manchester, the train arrives at a station that at one time was disused...Irlam. Like Hough Green, this is a typical CLC station, with station master's house at one end.
I travel all around Greater Manchester today with arch1e1000 and david37415 at the end. Includes Stockport, Ashburys, Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road, Deansgate, Trafford Park, Urmston and Irlam stations
Stopping at two extra stops (Urmston and Irlam) to help passengers get a direct service to Liverpool because the Northerns were terminating at Irlam because of a landslide on the Manchester side.

My experience of how the managed motorway around the M1 Lofthouse interchange can fail and cause uncertainty and unsafe motoring.
Walking through the town where you live
And I dream of another day
Daylight failing over the railings
Past your window
As another dream in the railway station
You're too late
You're gonna have to wait all day now
'Cause no one else will help you
Follow me to the seaside
It's fine for a daydream
They just let you down
They just let you down
Summer's gone incompletely
You're no one, you can disappear
If you don't try now
If you don't try again
On a sunny day I think
It gets hard to remember
They won't let you down
They won't let you down
They won't let you down
Seen something you've done
Far in a distance
You're waiting and watching
And don't think it's helping
They won't let you down
They won't let you down
