Greek or Hellenic (Modern Greek: ελληνικά [eliniˈka], elliniká, "Greek", ελληνική γλώσσα [eliniˈci ˈɣlosa], ellinikí glóssa, "Greek language") is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages, native to the southern Balkans, the Aegean Islands, western Asia Minor, parts of northern and Eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus, southern Italy, Albania and Cyprus. It has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. Its writing system has been the Greek alphabet for the majority of its history; other systems, such as Linear B and the Cypriot syllabary, were used previously. The alphabet arose from the Phoenician script and was in turn the basis of the Latin, Cyrillic, Armenian, Coptic, Gothic and many other writing systems.
The Greek language holds an important place in the histories of Europe, the more loosely defined Western world, and Christianity; the canon of ancient Greek literature includes works of monumental importance and influence for the future Western canon such as the epic poems Iliad and Odyssey. Greek was also the language in which many of the foundational texts of Western philosophy, such as the Platonic dialogues and the works of Aristotle, were composed; the New Testament of the Christian Bible was written in Koiné Greek. Together with the Latin texts and traditions of the Roman world, the study of the Greek texts and society of antiquity constitutes the discipline of Classics.
Greek may refer to:
Anything of, from, or related to Greece, a country in Southern Europe:
The Greek is a fictional character on the HBO drama The Wire, played by actor Bill Raymond. The Greek is the head of an international criminal organization involved in narcotics and human trafficking. The Greek is a mysterious figure involved in numerous criminal activities. His given name is never mentioned on the show, and though he is known only as "The Greek", he has stated (in the episode "Port in a Storm") that he is not actually Greek. A quiet and unassuming man, The Greek prefers to keep a low profile, operating all of his business through his lieutenant Spiros "Vondas" Vondopoulos. His smuggling organization operated from a small diner in Baltimore for years, and while Vondas would conduct business The Greek would listen in quietly at the counter. Nick Sobotka, upon seeing The Greek identify himself, was amazed that the shadowy figure had been in plain sight the entire time.
Despite his calm demeanor, The Greek is cunning and ruthless, and only interested in facts that make him more money. Series creator David Simon has said that The Greek is an embodiment of raw unencumbered capitalism. Anyone interfering in this process is eliminated immediately, and he prefers to leave victims headless and handless to hinder identification.
Language is the ability to acquire and use complex systems of communication, particularly the human ability to do so, and a language is any specific example of such a system. The scientific study of language is called linguistics.
Questions concerning the philosophy of language, such as whether words can represent experience, have been debated since Gorgias and Plato in Ancient Greece. Thinkers such as Rousseau have argued that language originated from emotions while others like Kant have held that it originated from rational and logical thought. 20th-century philosophers such as Wittgenstein argued that philosophy is really the study of language. Major figures in linguistics include Ferdinand de Saussure, Noam Chomsky and William C. Stokoe.
Estimates of the number of languages in the world vary between 5,000 and 7,000. However, any precise estimate depends on a partly arbitrary distinction between languages and dialects. Natural languages are spoken or signed, but any language can be encoded into secondary media using auditory, visual, or tactile stimuli – for example, in graphic writing, braille, or whistling. This is because human language is modality-independent. Depending on philosophical perspectives regarding the definition of language and meaning, when used as a general concept, "language" may refer to the cognitive ability to learn and use systems of complex communication, or to describe the set of rules that makes up these systems, or the set of utterances that can be produced from those rules. All languages rely on the process of semiosis to relate signs to particular meanings. Oral and sign languages contain a phonological system that governs how symbols are used to form sequences known as words or morphemes, and a syntactic system that governs how words and morphemes are combined to form phrases and utterances.
The Greek alphabet has been used to write the Greek language since the 8th century BC. It was derived from the earlier Phoenician alphabet, and was the first alphabetic script to have distinct letters for vowels as well as consonants. It is the ancestor of the Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Apart from its use in writing the Greek language, in both its ancient and its modern forms, the Greek alphabet today also serves as a source of technical symbols and labels in many domains of mathematics, science and other fields.
In its classical and modern forms, the alphabet has 24 letters, ordered from alpha to omega. Like Latin and Cyrillic, Greek originally had only a single form of each letter; it developed the letter case distinction between upper-case and lower-case forms in parallel with Latin during the modern era.
Sound values and conventional transcriptions for some of the letters differ between Ancient Greek and Modern Greek usage, because the pronunciation of Greek has changed significantly between the 5th century BC and today. Modern and Ancient Greek use different diacritics. Polytonic orthography, which is used for Ancient Greek and sometimes for Modern Greek, has many diacritics, such as accent marks for pitch accent, the breathing marks for the presence and absence of the /h/ sound, and the iota subscript for the historical /i/ sound. In standard Modern Greek spelling, orthography has been simplified to the monotonic system, which uses only two diacritics: the acute accent and diaeresis.

It is also the world’s oldest recoded living languages, with written inscriptions on clay tablets dating back to between 1450 and 1350 B.C.! Modern-day Greeks obviously don’t speak ancient Greek anymore, and travelers would be surprised to know that Greek words are present throughout our everyday vocabulary such as medical terms and numbers. All the documents of Christianity - such as those that are found in the collection known as 'the New Testament' - were written in the common Koine Greek language of the Mediterranean world. In this video, Dr Peter Watts argues that learning to read that language, as part of a study of theology or of the Bible, is an important way not only to get a deeper appreciation of those texts but of gaining access to the mental worlds of the writers of those early texts which are still valued by Christians today. I asked some Canadian students what Greek sounds like to them. I started by playing them audio from a clip of a Greek TV show. Then I asked them to guess which language was in the sample played to them. After a few guesses of mainly Spanish or Portuguese I gave them visual clues from the video so they could see the script and ethnicity of the people in the sample video. Most of them quickly answered Greek when they recognized the Greek alphabet. Finally, I asked them to imitate what they have heard for native Greek speakers to hear what their language sounds like to foreigners. This segment took some convincing because the subjects did not want to offend anyone or seem racist. Therefore please do not blame them if you are offended, I asked them to do it and most of them did it reluctantly...

It records an astonishing array of great works in different genres, stretching across a thousand years of history. Homer, one of the most influential poets ever, recited in the matchless cadences of the epic literary Greek dialect. The Apostle Paul, the Four Evangelists, and the other authors of the New Testament also left their accounts in Greek, using Koine, the beautifully clear conversational Greek spoken in the eastern Mediterranean of their day. Likewise, Sappho, Euripides, Aristophanes, Herodotus, Plato, Demosthenes...

From the Greek Television programme - MIXANI TOU XRONOU - (Alpha TV)...it is almost certainly impossible to adequately describe in less than one hour the life and work of what many would say is the most legendary Greek singer of the twentieth century. This excellent Greek language documentary does however provide a brief and useful narrative on a man who struggled through adversity and poverty to become one of the most loved and respected artists in Greek history. Stelios Kazantzidis was revered by the Greek speaking people the world over and his recorded music is still immensely popular with young and old.
One more excellent documentary from the Greek Television programme MIXANI TOU XRONOU. This time the subject is Greek singer VICKY MOSCHOLIOU. Regarded as one of the most successful female artists and the most recognizable female voice her colorful career spanned more than four decades...(1960 - 2005) and her contribution to the Greek popular - laiko music scene during that period was enormous. This documentary goes back in time to show how an ordinary young woman living in a poor neighborhood of Athens rose to meteoric stardom thanks to an extraordinary twist of fate and a truly remarkable voice.
