I’m so excited for the upcoming year. MTPR has many great events coming up in 2018.

We’ll be in Helena soon for a brown-bag lunch listener get-together on February 13 at the Myrna Loy Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. MTPR is sponsoring the International Guitar Night performance at the Myrna Loy that evening as well.

Sweet Potato Sprouting

Hi!  I’m Dr. Jamison Starbuck, a naturopathic family physician.  I’m here today with health tips for kids about: sweet potatoes.

The inspiration for this story comes from an organic sweet potato named Steady. When this sweet potato came home from the store, it was just a sweet potato.  It lay on our kitchen counter top for the longest time.  Most days I would look at it and think ‘I should bake that sweet potato tonight’.  But somehow, the time never came.  Finally I named the sweet potato Steady because it just lay there day after day and never changed. Until one day it did. Steady started to sprout.

24-year-old Oklahoma native Parker Millsap is quickly making a name for himself with his captivating live performances, soulful sound, and character-driven song narratives. He wrapped up a banner 2017, which included his network television debut on "Conan," an invitation to play with Elton John at the Apple Music Festival, an "Austin City Limits" taping and an Americana Music Association nomination for Album of the Year.

Thousands of people who are in the U.S. illegally are allowed to stay every year because they've been victims of crime. The number of people who apply for a “U visa” far outnumbers the slots made available, and that’s created a backlog. And some people can’t even get on the list because they lack one piece of paper from police. For one Mexican man in Montana, the lack of a U visa means he'll soon be deported.

Montana Senator Steve Daines and Congressman Greg Gianforte were aboard a chartered train in rural Virginia Wednesday that was involved in a fatal accident with a garbage truck. Congressman Gianforte and Senator Daines were not injured in Wednesday morning’s accident. But the truck’s driver was killed and a passenger critically injured.

Montana Public Radio Turns 53!

Happy birthday to us! Today marks 53 years on-air for Montana Public Radio. We've come a long way from 1965 when we started as a student training facility at UM with a broadcast area that only covered a few blocks. With the hard work of countless volunteers, program hosts, and staff — and financial support from listeners like you — we've matured into a media network broadcasting Montana news, arts & culture and hand-picked music across western Montana, and worldwide via the web.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make MTPR what it is today!

The American Civil Liberties Union is challenging a Montana state law that limits who can perform abortions. The lawsuit filed in state court Tuesday says current law violates patients’ equal protection rights to choose an abortion health care provider.

Montana law allows only physicians and physicians assistants to perform abortions.
