What is Newspapers in Education?

montana standard newspapers in education

The Independent Record's Newspaper In Education (NIE) program is designed to provide newspapers to area teachers and schools and the opportunity to share this free service with their students. The newspaper is a daily, up-to-date textbook of information about their community and the world around them. Teachers use the Independent Record to teach current events, math, reading, science, business and much more.

The Newspaper in Education programs have a measurable and positive impact on schools and children that utilize the newspaper in the classroom.

NIE in your Community

The NIE program is available to all Central and Southwest Montana schools that may be interested. We deliver papers as far away as Augusta, Wolf Creek, Three Forks, Townsend, Boulder, Lincoln, Marysville as well as Helena and other surrounding areas. We also provide papers from first grade through college.

Through our program, we provide teacher guides, worksheets and special tab publications during the school year. We conduct contests for kids like "Design an Ad" and "Scavenger Hunt," as well as provide Parade Magazine's poetry contests and links to other programs.

How we are able to provide papers

The Independent Record is able to provide papers to schools through fundraising and business sponsorships. Every year, we call hundreds of Montana businesses for contributions or sponsorships for our NIE program. The IR also holds block sales, pet pinup contests and other efforts to help with additional funding.

Typically, the IR works with between 100 and 160 teachers and almost every school request papers. There are between 4,000 and 5,000 requests for papers each day, depending on paper content and special publications. The need is great. If you would like to help us develop this great program, make a contribution today.

Testimonials

“I use NIE newspapers in my room daily. I have students use them for current events in my world history class. I love having the papers because students also like to read them when they are all done with their work. It keeps them up to date on what is going on in the world. My students really benefit from the newspapers. Thanks NIE.”
