The Tideway is a name given to the part of the River Thames in England that is subject to tides. This stretch of water is downstream from Teddington Lock and is in its widest definition just under 160 kilometres (99 mi) long. The Tideway includes the Thames Estuary, the Thames Gateway and the Pool of London.
Depending on the time of year, the river tide rises and falls twice a day by up to 7 m (24 ft) and due to the need to overcome the outflow of fresh water from a significant part of England takes longer to subside (ebb) (6–9 hours) than it does to flow in (4–5 hours).
London Bridge is used as the basis for published tide tables giving the times of high tide. High tide reaches Putney about 30 minutes later, similarly Teddington/Ham.
Low-lying banks of London have been defended against natural vulnerability to flooding by storm surges. The threat has increased due to a slow but continuous rise in high water level, caused by the extremely slow 'tilting' of Britain (up in the north and down in the south) due to post-glacial rebound and the gradual rise in sea levels due to climate change. The Thames Barrier was constructed across the Thames at Woolwich to deal with this threat.
The Thames Tideway scheme or Thames Tideway Tunnel is an under-construction 25 km (16 mi) tunnel running mostly under the tidal section of the River Thames through central London, which will provide capture, storage and conveyance of almost all the combined raw sewage and rainwater discharges that currently overflow into the river. The tunnel will be owned by Thames Tideway Tunnel Ltd (a new regulated Infrastructure Provider), constructed by Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd (a consortium of companies including Thames Water) and operated by Thames Water. On 3 November 2015, Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd received its operating licence from OFWAT, ensuring the start of the project.
Starting in 2016, construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel will take seven to eight years, giving a target completion date of 2023. Once constructed, the main tunnel will have an internal diameter of 7.2 m (24 ft) and will run from −30 m (−98 ft) at Acton in the west of London for over 25 km (16 mi) under central London down to −70 m (−230 ft) at Abbey Mills in the east. It will connect 34 of the most polluting combined sewer overflows (CSOs), via transfer tunnels, and is expected to reduce the number of overflow events to a maximum of four per CSO per year at time of commissioning, increasing gradually due to effects of climate change and population growth. The tunnel will transfer the captured sewage to the Lee Tunnel for onward delivery to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works for treatment. The recycled clean water is then released into the River Thames.
Once completed the Thames Tideway Tunnel will be Europe’s longest and deepest continuous tunnel, travelling 25km through central London to intercept untreated sewage discharges that spill into the tidal Thames and pollute the city’s iconic river. The Thames Tideway Tunnel will create a cleaner, healthier River Thames and improve the quality of life for all Londoners.
The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal River Thames from pollution. London's sewerage system is no longer fit for purpose and spills millions of tonnes of sewage into the tidal section of the river every year. Tideway is building the tunnel to tackle the problem of overflows from the capital's Victorian sewers for at least the next 100 years, and enable the UK to meet European environmental standards. The East section is delivered by a joint venture of Costain, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche. A reminder of the Rowing Code: How to navigate safely and correctly when rowing on the Thames Tideway.
Part of a project from the Library of Obscure Wonders - The Thames Wonder Cabinets. The finds from an extended public walk along the foreshore of the Thames, from Putney to Barnes (at low tide of course) were displayed along with a series of site specific, (very) large paintings by artist Joanne Victoria Roberts. The location was a Thames Barge housing the Cooper Collection. The sound-track is taken from a live improvisation involving Miss Roberts and Cos Chapman performed at a Recluse event at the Fleapit in Hackney. The sounds are all voice or guitar.
Led by our young presenter, we learn the facts about the project and how the Tunnel is going to lead to a brighter, cleaner future for the whole of London. This film has been instrumental in educating the public about the facts surrounding the project, and clarify any misconceptions people might have. In addition to the main film, we also produced a teaser film which was launched on the Thames Tideway Tunnel’s various social media platforms.
In 2013 the Tideway Owners' Association celebrated its 50th Anniversary. In addition to cruising meetings at Portsmouth, Leigh-On-Sea, River Alde, Falmouth, Portland and Ullswater, members met Chichester Harbour for a week of cruising and for annual Challenge Meeting for single and double-handed crews, this year hosted by Bosham Sailing Club. The Tideway dinghy was developed by L H Walker at Leigh-on-Sea in the aftermath of the second World War 2, and by the 1950s the "Walker" was a popular name amongst Britain's sailing fraternity. Early boats varied in length from 8' to 16' but the 12' clinker-built sliding gunter-rigged sloop in mahogany on oak was the most popular. Originally known as the Walker 12, with a few tweaks over the years, it evolved into the Tideway of today. In the early...
Challenge: SEA LIFE London Aquarium wanted to refurbish its River Thames zone to create a projection mapping spectacle with a detailed and strong narrative on the Thames Tideway Tunnel Project. The gallery has a very low ceiling with limited space available so it was important the display was not obscured by visitors standing in front of the projection. Solution: As part of the wider exhibition, two Optoma EH415ST projectors were installed and edge blended with Avolites Ai S4 media server to create a four-metre wide image onto a 3D map of London. This shows a four-minute film with 3D projection mapped animated content telling a tale that spans 100 years, with multiple characters, sub plots and most importantly - humour. Results: The exhibition captivates visitors of all ages and from count...

The Institution of Civil Engineers and Tideway have partnered to hold The River People Photography Exhibition, an art installation by photographer Matthew Joseph exploring the lives of people who use the River Thames every day, whether for work, leisure or travel. The Exhibition will run until Friday 3 June 2016 in the Library of One Great George Street. It will be open to the public free of charge, Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 18.00. The beaches, banks and foreshore of the River Thames in London form a very attractive place. But the availability of public stairs with access to the foreshore has been in decline for 3 centuries. Another big change in the 20th century was the cleaning of the the river water. It is still brown, but that's mud. Industrial pollution has been stopped. So has sewage pollution, except when stormwater drains are overloaded. So the next step is a great programme of habitat creation, beach improvement and the protection of the foreshore archaeology. The PLA is primarily a Port Authority but has significant environmental responsibilities under the Harbours Act of 1964 Section 48(a) and under the EU Habitats Directive, adopted by the UK in 1994. The PLA has duties to ensure biodiversity, conserv...
