Darbar Festival presents the very best classical music to our audiences through amazing concerts from the finest musicians from Indian classical music and Carnatic music. In this performance, we present Nina Burmi, one of the UK's leading exponents of the 'Kirana' Gharana Style of Hindustani classical vocal. Naturally gifted with a melodious and resonant voice, which extends uniquely across a range of three octaves, Nina effortlessly captures the exquisite yet vibrant and dynamic emotions of Hindustani classical music.
Nina is best known for her youthful flair with mature virtuosity - whether khayal, thumri or bhajan. Her training began at an early age with Shree Surjit Singh Raja. Her style, classism, and maturity was developed under the tutelage from distinguished maestro Ustad Dilshad Khan and Begum Parveen Sultana.
Accompanying NIna in this amazing performance, is the world famous Pandit Ramesh Mishra on Sarangi and Sanju Sahai on tabla. This recording was made during the Darbar Festival 2006.

This Album of Hindustani Classical Music features one of the most legendary and popular Hindustani Classical musician, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is undoubtedly one of the greatest Sarod Players still practicing. He is responsible for popularizing Sarod as a musical instrument worldwide.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan hails from the famous Senia Bangesh gharana or school of music. Amjad Ali learnt his art form from his father the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan who was initiated in the tradition of Senia Bangesh Gharana by Ustad Pyar Khan and Ustad Jafar Khan,direct descendants of the line of Tansen. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's family is closely related to the history of Sarod and are said to be the inventors of this instrument.
Sarod is said to have descended from the Afghani Instrument Rabab. Sarod as we see it today owes a lot to the Senia Bangesh Gharana for its modifications. The beauty of this classical instrument lies in it's tonal clarity and the swooping slides between the melody notes. This style of playing allows the sarod player to copy a human voice. This technique is possible because of the primary modification of the Sarod from the Afghan Rabab which is replacing the wooden fingerboard with a long metal fingerboard. Thus allowing the Sarod player to slide almost seven notes or more. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is notably one of the masters of this technique. He is also known for his blazing fast staccato passages. In this album Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has presented raga Desh. Desh Raga is of Audav-Sampurna nature, i.e, in its arohana (ascent) only five notes are used where as in the avarohana (descent) all the seven notes are used. This is a very popular raga which is commonly sung at the second quarter of the night. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has delivered a very soulful rendition of the raga following the structure of Hindustani Classical music format. A treat for your ears, this album "Hindusthani Classical Instrumental Sarod" by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is a steal.

Jasraj's vocal range extends three-and-a-half octaves and uses precise diction, a trademark of the Mewati gharana's style of khayal. He has also done extensive research in Haveli Sangeet under Baba Shyam Manohar Goswami Maharaj to create numerous innovative bandish.
Jasraj created a novel form of jugalbandi called Jasrangi that is styled on the ancient system of moorchhana, between a male and a female vocalist, who each sing different ragas at the same time. He is also known for presenting a wide variety of Rare Raags including Gyankali, Abiri Todi, Dhanashree, Patdeepki, Purba, Bhavsakh, Devsakh, Gunji Kanada and Charju Ki Malhar.
Jasraj has many students, including Rattan Mohan Sharma, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Ramesh Narayan, Suman Ghosh, Tripti Mukherjee, Pritam Bhattacharjee, Kala Ramnath and Sadhana Sargam.
In memory of his father, Jasraj organises a musical festival every year called the Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh in Hyderabad, India. It ran for 36 years as of 2008. Jasraj participated at the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival.

Indian classical music
Indian classical music is the art music of the Indian subcontinent. The origins of Indian classical music can be found in the Vedas, which are the oldest scriptures in the Hindu tradition dating back to 1500 BCE. The Samaveda was derived from the Rigveda so that its hymns could be sung as Samagana. These hymns were sung by Udgatar priests at sacrifices in which the Soma ritual drink, clarified and mixed with milk and other ingredients, was offered in libation to various deities. This chanting style evolved into jatis and eventually into ragas. Indian classical music has also been significantly influenced by, or syncretised with, Indian folk music. Bharat's Natyashastra was the first treatise laying down fundamental principles of dance, music, and drama.
Indian classical music is both elaborate and expressive. Like Western classical music, it divides the octave into 12 semitones of which the 8 basic notes are, in ascending tonal order, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa for Hindustani music and Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa for Carnatic music, similar to Western music's Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. However, Indian music uses just-intonation tuning, unlike most modern Western classical music, which uses the equal-temperament tuning system. Also, unlike modern Western classical music, Indian classical music places great emphasis on improvisation.

Classical music
Classical music is art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western music, including both liturgical (religious) and secular music. While a similar term is also used to refer to the period from 1750-1820 (the Classical period), this article is about the broad span of time from roughly the 11th century to the present day, which includes the Classical period and various other periods. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common practice period. Music
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. This Album of Hindustani Classical Music features one of the most legendary and popular Hindustani Classical musician, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is undoubtedly one of the greatest Sarod Players still practicing. He is responsible for popularizing Sarod as a musical instrument worldwide. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan hails from the famous Senia Bangesh gharana or school of music. Amjad Ali learnt his art form from his father the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan who was initiated in the tradition of Senia Bangesh Gharana by Ustad Pyar Khan and Ustad Jafar Khan,direct descendants of the line of Tansen. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's family is closely related to the history of Sarod and are said to be the inventors of this instrument. Sarod is said to have descended from the Afghani Instrument Rabab. Sarod as we see it today owes a lot to the Senia Bangesh Gharana for its modifications. The beauty of this classical instrument lies in it's tonal clarity and the swooping slides between the melody notes. This style of playing allows the sarod player to copy a human voice. This technique is possible because of the primary modification of the Sarod from the Afghan Rabab which is replacing the wooden fingerboard with a long metal fingerboard. Thus allowing the Sarod player to slide almost seven notes or more. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is notably one of the masters of this technique. He is also known for his blazing fast staccato passages. In this album Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has presented raga Desh. Desh Raga is of Audav-Sampurna nature, i.e, in its arohana (ascent) only five notes are used where as in the avarohana (descent) all the seven notes are used. This is a very popular raga which is commonly sung at the second quarter of the night. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has delivered a very soulful rendition of the raga following the structure of Hindustani Classical music format. Jasraj created a novel form of jugalbandi called Jasrangi that is styled on the ancient system of moorchhana, between a male and a female vocalist, who each sing different ragas at the same time. He is also known for presenting a wide variety of Rare Raags including Gyankali, Abiri Todi, Dhanashree, Patdeepki, Purba, Bhavsakh, Devsakh, Gunji Kanada and Charju Ki Malhar. Jasraj has many students, including Rattan Mohan Sharma, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Ramesh Narayan, Suman Ghosh, Tripti Mukherjee, Pritam Bhattacharjee, Kala Ramnath and Sadhana Sargam. In memory of his father, Jasraj organises a musical festival every year called the Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh in Hyderabad, India. It ran for 36 years as of 2008. In this performance, we present Nina Burmi, one of the UK's leading exponents of the 'Kirana' Gharana Style of Hindustani classical vocal. Naturally gifted with a melodious and resonant voice, which extends uniquely across a range of three octaves, Nina effortlessly captures the exquisite yet vibrant and dynamic emotions of Hindustani classical music.
Nina is best known for her youthful flair with mature virtuosity - whether khayal, thumri or bhajan. Her training began at an early age with Shree Surjit Singh Raja. Her style, classism, and maturity was developed under the tutelage from distinguished maestro Ustad Dilshad Khan and Begum Parveen Sultana.
Accompanying NIna in this amazing performance, is the world famous Pandit Ramesh Mishra on Sarangi and Sanju Sahai on tabla. This recording was made during the Darbar Festival 2006.

This Album of Hindustani Classical Music features one of the most legendary and popular Hindustani Classical musician, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is undoubtedly one of the greatest Sarod Players still practicing. He is responsible for popularizing Sarod as a musical instrument worldwide.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan hails from the famous Senia Bangesh gharana or school of music. Amjad Ali learnt his art form from his father the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan who was initiated in the tradition of Senia Bangesh Gharana by Ustad Pyar Khan and Ustad Jafar Khan,direct descendants of the line of Tansen. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's family is closely related to the history of Sarod and are said to be the inventors of this instrument.
Sarod is said to have descended from the Afghani Instrument Rabab. Sarod as we see it today owes a lot to the Senia Bangesh Gharana for its modifications. The beauty of this classical instrument lies in it's tonal clarity and the swooping slides between the melody notes. This style of playing allows the sarod player to copy a human voice. This technique is possible because of the primary modification of the Sarod from the Afghan Rabab which is replacing the wooden fingerboard with a long metal fingerboard. Thus allowing the Sarod player to slide almost seven notes or more. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is notably one of the masters of this technique. He is also known for his blazing fast staccato passages. In this album Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has presented raga Desh. Desh Raga is of Audav-Sampurna nature, i.e, in its arohana (ascent) only five notes are used where as in the avarohana (descent) all the seven notes are used. This is a very popular raga which is commonly sung at the second quarter of the night. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has delivered a very soulful rendition of the raga following the structure of Hindustani Classical music format. Jasraj created a novel form of jugalbandi called Jasrangi that is styled on the ancient system of moorchhana, between a male and a female vocalist, who each sing different ragas at the same time. He is also known for presenting a wide variety of Rare Raags including Gyankali, Abiri Todi, Dhanashree, Patdeepki, Purba, Bhavsakh, Devsakh, Gunji Kanada and Charju Ki Malhar.
Jasraj has many students, including Rattan Mohan Sharma, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Ramesh Narayan, Suman Ghosh, Tripti Mukherjee, Pritam Bhattacharjee, Kala Ramnath and Sadhana Sargam.

‘Universal Notes’ brings together two great classical traditions - Western and Indian classical music - in a groundbreaking collaboration between today’s most imaginative and skilled musicians. This premiere performance marks the culmination of a year long project between Darbar and Philharmonia Orchestra, which deliberately moves away from simply jamming or creating a ‘fusion’ music piece. Universal Notes is inspired by the Indian raga, which through intensive workshops in both India and the UK, has brought together the talents of these extraordinary musicians to create a work of depth and beauty.

This Album of Hindustani Classical Music features one of the most legendary and popular Hindustani Classical musician, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is undoubtedly one of the greatest Sarod Players still practicing. He is responsible for popularizing Sarod as a musical instrument worldwide.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan hails from the famous Senia Bangesh gharana or school of music. Amjad Ali learnt his art form from his father the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan who was initiated in the tradition of Senia Bangesh Gharana by Ustad Pyar Khan and Ustad Jafar Khan,direct descendants of the line of Tansen. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's family is closely related to the history of Sarod and are said to be the inventors of this instrument.
Sarod is said to have descended from the Afghani Instrument Rabab. Sarod as we see it today owes a lot to the Senia Bangesh Gharana for its modifications. The beauty of this classical instrument lies in it's tonal clarity and the swooping slides between the melody notes. This style of playing allows the sarod player to copy a human voice. This technique is possible because of the primary modification of the Sarod from the Afghan Rabab which is replacing the wooden fingerboard with a long metal fingerboard. Thus allowing the Sarod player to slide almost seven notes or more. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is notably one of the masters of this technique. He is also known for his blazing fast staccato passages. In this album Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has presented raga Desh. Desh Raga is of Audav-Sampurna nature, i.e, in its arohana (ascent) only five notes are used where as in the avarohana (descent) all the seven notes are used. This is a very popular raga which is commonly sung at the second quarter of the night. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has delivered a very soulful rendition of the raga following the structure of Hindustani Classical music format. Jasraj created a novel form of jugalbandi called Jasrangi that is styled on the ancient system of moorchhana, between a male and a female vocalist, who each sing different ragas at the same time. He is also known for presenting a wide variety of Rare Raags including Gyankali, Abiri Todi, Dhanashree, Patdeepki, Purba, Bhavsakh, Devsakh, Gunji Kanada and Charju Ki Malhar.
Jasraj has many students, including Rattan Mohan Sharma, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Ramesh Narayan, Suman Ghosh, Tripti Mukherjee, Pritam Bhattacharjee, Kala Ramnath and Sadhana Sargam.
In memory of his father, Jasraj organises a musical festival every year called the Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh in Hyderabad, India. It ran for 36 years as of 2008. Jasraj participated at the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival.
