A high school (also secondary school, senior school, secondary college) is a school that provides adolescents with part or all of their secondary education. It may come after primary school or middle school and be followed by higher education or vocational training.
The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.
The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.
In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. High school immediately follows primary (elementary) school; therefore, a Year-7 Australian high-school student is sometimes as young as 12. In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".
Melbourne High School is a selective-entry state school for boys in years 9 to 12 located in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra. The school is known mainly for its strong academic reputation. Melbourne High School had the leading rank based on VCE average, with its 2009 cohort achieving a median ENTER of 95.85, the highest of any Victorian school in recorded history.
The school was founded in 1905 as the first coeducational state secondary school in Victoria. Melbourne High School was originally located in Spring Street in Melbourne. In 1927, the boys and girls split, with the boys moving to a new school at Forrest Hill in the inner city suburb of South Yarra which retained the name Melbourne High School. The girls eventually moved to the Mac.Robertson Girls' High School on Kings Way, Melbourne. Throughout this history, enrolment for year 9 has been determined by an entrance examination, held in June each year. The entrance examination consists of an assessment of the applicant's mathematics and English skills. In 2007, 308 Year 9s entered the school, out of over 1,200 students who undertook the examination.
Melbourne (/ˈmɛlbərn/, AU i/ˈmɛlbən/) is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The name "Melbourne" refers to the area of urban agglomeration (as well as a census statistical division) spanning 9,900 km2 (3,800 sq mi) which comprises the broader metropolitan area, as well as being the common name for its city centre. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities. It has a population of 4,347,955 as of 2013, and its inhabitants are called Melburnians.
Founded by free settlers from the British Crown colony of Van Diemen's Land on 30 August 1835, in what was then the colony of New South Wales, it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837. It was named "Melbourne" by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. It was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847, after which it became the capital of the newly founded colony of Victoria in 1851. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the nation's interim seat of government until 1927.
High may refer to:
A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.

Apologies for the low quality. This is the full video of a speech given by Melbourne High's Ben Qin at the year 12 final assembly. This caught the eye of The Age who wrote a terrible article on it and included a 2 minute snippet. Deplorable.

It is one of the worlds biggest mass UFO sighting. More than 200 school students witnessed this unidentified flying object. Witnesses believe there has been a cover-up. For about 20 minutes unknown flying object was hovering couple feets over the grass field near the Westall High School. The object was observed by few of the students and described as being a grey saucer-shaped craft with a slight purple glow and size larger than a car. Soon other students (and some of the teachers) run out of the school and watched the strange object from beyond the fence making it together over 200 eyewitnesses. According to them the object was descending and then crossed and overflew the high school’s south-west corner, going in a south-east direction, before disappearing from sight as it descended beh...

The Westall UFO encounter is an event that occurred on 6 April 1966 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Around 11.00 am, for about 20 minutes, more than 200 students and teachers at two Victorian state schools witnessed an unexplained flying object which descended into a nearby open wild grass field. At approximately 11.00 am on Wednesday, 6 April 1966, a class of students and a teacher from Westall High School were just completing a sport activity on the main oval when an object, described as being a grey saucer-shaped craft with a slight purple hue and being about twice the size of a family car, was seen. Witness descriptions were mixed: Andrew Greenwood, a science teacher, told The Dandenong Journal at the time that he saw a silvery-green disc. According to witnesses the object was des...
https://www.examsuccess.com.au helps students prepare for selective school and scholarship exams. In this video we'll go through a piece a student has written for the MacRobertson Girls High School (MacRob) and Melbourne High entrance exam that happens in June each year in Victoria. She's done a fantastic job within 15 minutes with a piece that has good structure along with good arguments.
This was broadcast on WMMB, 1240 AM, in Melbourne on Friday, December 9, 1966, at the end of the 1966 high school football season. The 2A championship game was between the Melbourne Bulldogs, ranked #1 in the state and the Ft. Lauderdale Flying L's ranked #3. The Mel-Hi principal was B. Frank Brown, who had become nationally known for the academic programs he installed at the school. He wanted to do the same for athletics and hired Byrd Wigham, who had won a state championship at 1A Wildwood (FL) High School in 1964. Wigham took his 2A-level Melbourne team to the state championship against Miami High in the Orange Bowl in 1965 and lost. But came roaring back with a spectacular season in 1966, even though most of it was played without a quarterback. Team star, Mickey Zofco went down w...
Bubble gum and house parties
When you stole your parents rum
And tried to screw everything that could breathe
Back in high school we didn't have a whole lot to do
We watched the world go by on the television screen
Said it's the 90's kids that's way out this is way in
Go beat each other up on the dance floor
Told us drugs were no good
But then we smoked 'em and liked 'em
So much that we smoked a little more
We liked 'em so much, we smoked a little more
Did I call your name?
Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you?
You're so the same but your so different
I didn't recognize you
It's kinda hard with all that sexual confusion
Sometimes you don't know if you're gay or straight
But what's the difference, it's a wonderful illusion
Most times you won't make it past second base
I'm in a band, we kinda suck but we don't now it yet
And I don't care anyway
'Cuz soon, I'm gonna sell these drums, pay my rent
Support my kid and tell him all about way back in daddy's day
I'll tell him all about way back in daddy's day
Did I call your name?
Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you?
You're so the same but your so different
I didn't recognize you
Some years later by a soda coolerator
In a corner store back in my home town
This stranger smiles at me, said
"Remember the class of '93?"
And for some reason it makes him look real proud
After all the good times he said we had
He looks at me, scratches his head
And asked me where the hell I ever went
And the funny thing is that I never even knew him
But he coulda been any one of my high school friends
Did I call your name?
Did you hear me singin' that song that I wrote for you?
Your so the same but your so different
I didn't recognize you
Did I call you name?
Singin' that song that I wrote for you
Singin' that song I wrote for you
