The meter is the world’s ultimate measure, but how did it become “the” meter? What is this measurement based on? The story of this revolution in measurement traces its roots to the French Revolution. Scientists decided that an equal and united people should have equal and united measures. So they sent a pair of young astronomers out to measure the world, and invent the meter. Little did they know they’d find nothing but war, deception, and strife along the way. As a result of this ill-fated mission, the meter carries an error that still persists today. Still think the metric system is so perfect?

Mure zieht im Salzburger Pongau Spur der Verwüstung - Starke Gewitter mit Sturm, Starkregen und Hagel zogen Samstagabend über Tirol, Salzburg, Kärnten und die Steiermark. Schwer getroffen wurden erneut der Pongau und Pinzgau. Zahlreiche Feuerwehren standen am späten Abend im Einsatz. Großarl war von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten und die Felbertauernstraße musste nach einem Murenabgang komplett gesperrt werden.
Unwetterwarnung gab es Samstagabend erneut für Tirol, Salzburg und Kärnten. Vor allem für den Pinzgau wurden am Abend heftige Gewitter mit Hagel vorausgesagt. Und die Voraussagen bewahrheiteten sich.
Unwetterzelle breitete sich über Salzburg aus
Die Unwetterzelle mit Starkregen, Sturm und Hagel wanderte gegen 18 Uhr von Wald im Pinzgau über Neukirchen am Großvenediger bis hin nach Rauris und breitete sich dann auch über dem Pongau sowie Teile des Tennen- und Lungaus aus, wie die Karte der Österreichischen Unwetterzentrale kurz vor 20 Uhr zeigt.
Überflutungen und Muren im Pongau und Pinzgau
In Salzburg kam es erneut zu einer Reihe von Feuerwehreinsätzen vor allem im Pongau, Pinzgau und Lungau, berichtet der Landesfeuerwehrverband Salzburg: Nach einem Murenabgang musste etwa die Felbertauernstraße zwischen Matrei und dem Felbertauerntunnel in beiden Richtungen gesperrt werden. Auch die Straße von Salzburg kommend wurde gegen 21 Uhr komplett gesperrt.
Ebenfalls unterbrochen war die B99 zwischen Tweng und Untertauern. Die Sperren werden voraussichtlich bis in die Morgenstunden dauern.
In Großarl wurde die Großarler Ache an mehreren Stellen überflutet. Die Landesstraße musste ebenfalls komplett gesperrt werden. Wie Markus Winkler von Pressefoto Pongau im Gespräch mit SALZBURG24 berichtet, ist die Gemeinde von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. “Das kann noch Stunden dauern, bis das Wasser wieder zurückgeht”, schildert der Fotograf, der diese Nacht wohl in Großarl festsitzen wird. Im Pongau seien neben der Feuerwehr und der Bergrettung Großarl auch die Feuerwehren St. Veit, Hüttschlag sowie die Bergrettung aus dem Gasteinertal im Einsatz. Diese ersten Bilder aus Dorfgastein lassen das gewaltige Ausmaß des Unwetters nur erahnen.
Auch in Tirol kam es zu Überflutungen und Muren: Das Open Air der Zillertaler Schürzenjäger musste abgesagt und das Gelände geräumt werden, nachdem gegen 17.45 Uhr eine heftige Gewitterfront über den Veranstaltungsort gezogen war.
Feuerwehren im Unwettereinsatz
Erst Freitagabend haben in den Salzburger Gebirgsgauen schwere Unwetter zu zahlreichen kleinräumigen Überschwemmungen und Murenabgängen geführt. Die Feuerwehren wurden im Pinzgau, Pongau und Lungau zu insgesamt 72 Einsätzen gerufen (SALZBURG24 hat berichtet). 680 Feuerwehrleute waren von 19 Uhr bis nach Mitternacht im Einsatz. Am Samstag waren noch einige Feuerwehrleute mit dem Reinigen von Straßen und Entfernen von umgestürzten Bäumen beschäftigt.

Metre
The metre, or meter (American spelling), (from the Greek noun μέτρον, "measure") is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). The SI unit symbol is m. The metre is defined as the distance travelled by light in a specific fraction (1/299 792 458) of a second.
The metre was originally defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. In 1889, it was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was subsequently changed twice). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition was adopted.
The imperial inch is defined as 0.0254 metres (2.54 centimetres or 25.4 millimetres). One metre is about 3 3⁄8 inches longer than a yard, i.e. about 39 3⁄8 inches.
Spelling
Metre is the standard spelling of the metric unit for length in all English-speaking nations except the USA, which uses meter.
Measuring devices (such as ammeter, speedometer) are spelled "-meter" in all countries. The word "meter", signifying any such device, has the same derivation as the word "metre", denoting the unit of length.

Lightning McQueen
Lightning McQueen, typically referred to by his surname McQueen, is an anthropomorphic racecar in the animated Pixar film Cars (2006), its sequel Cars 2 (2011), and TV shorts known as Cars Toons. He is based on Toyota NASCAR vehicles, but with design influences from the Mazda Miata and Dodge Viper. Late in the original film, he is painted much like the Chevrolet Corvette C1.
Characterization
During the initial research for the film, John Lasseter met with General Motors designers to discuss the new Corvette design but subsequent changes to the storyline left both Lightning McQueen and rival Chick Hicks as generic.
In order to create a cocky but likable character for McQueen, Pixar looked at sports figures like boxer Muhammad Ali, basketball player Charles Barkley, and football quarterback Joe Namath, as well as popular musician Kid Rock.
The end result is a character which, despite the usually-meticulous approach to "truth to material" in which each car's animation is mechanically consistent with its respective model's capabilities, can occasionally bend the rules to move more like an athlete than a motorcar.

Cars (film)
Cars is a 2006 American computer-animated comedy-adventure sports film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed and co-written by John Lasseter, it is Pixar's final independently-produced motion picture before its purchase by Disney. Set in a world populated entirely by anthropomorphic cars and other vehicles, it features the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman (in his final non-documentary feature), Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin, Michael Wallis, George Carlin, Paul Dooley, Jenifer Lewis, Guido Quaroni, Michael Keaton, Katherine Helmond, and John Ratzenberger. Cars premiered on May 26, 2006 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina and was theatrically released on June 9, 2006, to positive reviews. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The film was released on DVD on November 7, 2006 and to Blu-ray Disc in late 2007. Related merchandise, including scale models of several of the cars, broke records for retail sales of merchandise based on a Disney·Pixar film, bringing an estimated $10 billion in 5 years since the film's release. The film was dedicated to Joe Ranft, who was killed in a car accident during the film's production.

Mure zieht im Salzburger Pongau Spur der Verwüstung - Starke Gewitter mit Sturm, Starkregen und Hagel zogen Samstagabend über Tirol, Salzburg, Kärnten und die Steiermark. Schwer getroffen wurden erneut der Pongau und Pinzgau. Zahlreiche Feuerwehren standen am späten Abend im Einsatz. Großarl war von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten und die Felbertauernstraße musste nach einem Murenabgang komplett gesperrt werden. Unwetterwarnung gab es Samstagabend erneut für Tirol, Salzburg und Kärnten. Vor allem für den Pinzgau wurden am Abend heftige Gewitter mit Hagel vorausgesagt. Und die Voraussagen bewahrheiteten sich. Unwetterzelle breitete sich über Salzburg aus Die Unwetterzelle mit Starkregen, Sturm und Hagel wanderte gegen 18 Uhr von Wald im Pinzgau über Neukirchen am Großvenediger bis hin nach Rauris und breitete sich dann auch über dem Pongau sowie Teile des Tennen- und Lungaus aus, wie die Karte der Österreichischen Unwetterzentrale kurz vor 20 Uhr zeigt. Überflutungen und Muren im Pongau und Pinzgau In Salzburg kam es erneut zu einer Reihe von Feuerwehreinsätzen vor allem im Pongau, Pinzgau und Lungau, berichtet der Landesfeuerwehrverband Salzburg: Nach einem Murenabgang musste etwa die Felbertauernstraße zwischen Matrei und dem Felbertauerntunnel in beiden Richtungen gesperrt werden. Auch die Straße von Salzburg kommend wurde gegen 21 Uhr komplett gesperrt. Ebenfalls unterbrochen war die B99 zwischen Tweng und Untertauern. Die Sperren werden voraussichtlich bis in die Morgenstunden dauern. In Großarl wurde die Großarler Ache an mehreren Stellen überflutet. Die Landesstraße musste ebenfalls komplett gesperrt werden. Wie Markus Winkler von Pressefoto Pongau im Gespräch mit SALZBURG24 berichtet, ist die Gemeinde von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. “Das kann noch Stunden dauern, bis das Wasser wieder zurückgeht”, schildert der Fotograf, der diese Nacht wohl in Großarl festsitzen wird. Im Pongau seien neben der Feuerwehr und der Bergrettung Großarl auch die Feuerwehren St. Veit, Hüttschlag sowie die Bergrettung aus dem Gasteinertal im Einsatz. Diese ersten Bilder aus Dorfgastein lassen das gewaltige Ausmaß des Unwetters nur erahnen. Auch in Tirol kam es zu Überflutungen und Muren: Das Open Air der Zillertaler Schürzenjäger musste abgesagt und das Gelände geräumt werden, nachdem gegen 17.45 Uhr eine heftige Gewitterfront über den Veranstaltungsort gezogen war. Feuerwehren im Unwettereinsatz Erst Freitagabend haben in den Salzburger Gebirgsgauen schwere Unwetter zu zahlreichen kleinräumigen Überschwemmungen und Murenabgängen geführt. Die Feuerwehren wurden im Pinzgau, Pongau und Lungau zu insgesamt 72 Einsätzen gerufen (SALZBURG24 hat berichtet). 680 Feuerwehrleute waren von 19 Uhr bis nach Mitternacht im Einsatz. Mure zieht im Salzburger Pongau Spur der Verwüstung - Starke Gewitter mit Sturm, Starkregen und Hagel zogen Samstagabend über Tirol, Salzburg, Kärnten und die Steiermark. Schwer getroffen wurden erneut der Pongau und Pinzgau. Zahlreiche Feuerwehren standen am späten Abend im Einsatz. Großarl war von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten und die Felbertauernstraße musste nach einem Murenabgang komplett gesperrt werden.
Unwetterwarnung gab es Samstagabend erneut für Tirol, Salzburg und Kärnten. Vor allem für den Pinzgau wurden am Abend heftige Gewitter mit Hagel vorausgesagt. Und die Voraussagen bewahrheiteten sich.
Unwetterzelle breitete sich über Salzburg aus
Die Unwetterzelle mit Starkregen, Sturm und Hagel wanderte gegen 18 Uhr von Wald im Pinzgau über Neukirchen am Großvenediger bis hin nach Rauris und breitete sich dann auch über dem Pongau sowie Teile des Tennen- und Lungaus aus, wie die Karte der Österreichischen Unwetterzentrale kurz vor 20 Uhr zeigt.
Überflutungen und Muren im Pongau und Pinzgau
In Salzburg kam es erneut zu einer Reihe von Feuerwehreinsätzen vor allem im Pongau, Pinzgau und Lungau, berichtet der Landesfeuerwehrverband Salzburg: Nach einem Murenabgang musste etwa die Felbertauernstraße zwischen Matrei und dem Felbertauerntunnel in beiden Richtungen gesperrt werden. Auch die Straße von Salzburg kommend wurde gegen 21 Uhr komplett gesperrt.
Ebenfalls unterbrochen war die B99 zwischen Tweng und Untertauern. Die Sperren werden voraussichtlich bis in die Morgenstunden dauern.
In Großarl wurde die Großarler Ache an mehreren Stellen überflutet. Die Landesstraße musste ebenfalls komplett gesperrt werden. Wie Markus Winkler von Pressefoto Pongau im Gespräch mit SALZBURG24 berichtet, ist die Gemeinde von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. “Das kann noch Stunden dauern, bis das Wasser wieder zurückgeht”, schildert der Fotograf, der diese Nacht wohl in Großarl festsitzen wird. Im Pongau seien neben der Feuerwehr und der Bergrettung Großarl auch die Feuerwehren St. Veit, Hüttschlag sowie die Bergrettung aus dem Gasteinertal im Einsatz. Diese ersten Bilder aus Dorfgastein lassen das gewaltige Ausmaß des Unwetters nur erahnen.
Auch in Tirol kam es zu Überflutungen und Muren: Das Open Air der Zillertaler Schürzenjäger musste abgesagt und das Gelände geräumt werden, nachdem gegen 17.45 Uhr eine heftige Gewitterfront über den Veranstaltungsort gezogen war.
Feuerwehren im Unwettereinsatz
Erst Freitagabend haben in den Salzburger Gebirgsgauen schwere Unwetter zu zahlreichen kleinräumigen Überschwemmungen und Murenabgängen geführt. Mure zieht im Salzburger Pongau Spur der Verwüstung - Starke Gewitter mit Sturm, Starkregen und Hagel zogen Samstagabend über Tirol, Salzburg, Kärnten und die Steiermark. Schwer getroffen wurden erneut der Pongau und Pinzgau. Zahlreiche Feuerwehren standen am späten Abend im Einsatz. Großarl war von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten und die Felbertauernstraße musste nach einem Murenabgang komplett gesperrt werden.
Unwetterwarnung gab es Samstagabend erneut für Tirol, Salzburg und Kärnten. Vor allem für den Pinzgau wurden am Abend heftige Gewitter mit Hagel vorausgesagt. Und die Voraussagen bewahrheiteten sich.
Unwetterzelle breitete sich über Salzburg aus
Die Unwetterzelle mit Starkregen, Sturm und Hagel wanderte gegen 18 Uhr von Wald im Pinzgau über Neukirchen am Großvenediger bis hin nach Rauris und breitete sich dann auch über dem Pongau sowie Teile des Tennen- und Lungaus aus, wie die Karte der Österreichischen Unwetterzentrale kurz vor 20 Uhr zeigt.
Überflutungen und Muren im Pongau und Pinzgau
In Salzburg kam es erneut zu einer Reihe von Feuerwehreinsätzen vor allem im Pongau, Pinzgau und Lungau, berichtet der Landesfeuerwehrverband Salzburg: Nach einem Murenabgang musste etwa die Felbertauernstraße zwischen Matrei und dem Felbertauerntunnel in beiden Richtungen gesperrt werden. Auch die Straße von Salzburg kommend wurde gegen 21 Uhr komplett gesperrt.
Ebenfalls unterbrochen war die B99 zwischen Tweng und Untertauern. Die Sperren werden voraussichtlich bis in die Morgenstunden dauern.
In Großarl wurde die Großarler Ache an mehreren Stellen überflutet. Die Landesstraße musste ebenfalls komplett gesperrt werden. Wie Markus Winkler von Pressefoto Pongau im Gespräch mit SALZBURG24 berichtet, ist die Gemeinde von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. “Das kann noch Stunden dauern, bis das Wasser wieder zurückgeht”, schildert der Fotograf, der diese Nacht wohl in Großarl festsitzen wird. Im Pongau seien neben der Feuerwehr und der Bergrettung Großarl auch die Feuerwehren St. Veit, Hüttschlag sowie die Bergrettung aus dem Gasteinertal im Einsatz. Diese ersten Bilder aus Dorfgastein lassen das gewaltige Ausmaß des Unwetters nur erahnen.
Auch in Tirol kam es zu Überflutungen und Muren: Das Open Air der Zillertaler Schürzenjäger musste abgesagt und das Gelände geräumt werden, nachdem gegen 17.45 Uhr eine heftige Gewitterfront über den Veranstaltungsort gezogen war.
Feuerwehren im Unwettereinsatz
Erst Freitagabend haben in den Salzburger Gebirgsgauen schwere Unwetter zu zahlreichen kleinräumigen Überschwemmungen und Murenabgängen geführt.
