The Parliament of Catalonia (Catalan: Parlament de Catalunya, IPA: [pərɫəˈmen də kətəˈɫuɲə]) is the unicameral legislature of Catalonia (Spain). It is formed by 135 members ("diputats"), who are elected every four years or after extraordinary dissolution, chosen by universal suffrage in lists with four constituencies, the Catalan provinces. The Parliament building is located in Ciutadella Park.
The most recent parliamentary elections were held on 27 September 2015.
The first representative and legislative bodies in Catalonia were the Peace and Truce of God Assemblies (assemblees de pau i treva), of which the earliest record dates from 1027. These were originally ad hoc, local meetings convened by the Church (Oliba, Bishop of Vic, who died in 1046, was a notable instigator) but progressively became subsumed into the court of the Counts of Barcelona. The first Catalan legal code, the Usatges de Barcelona, was promulgated by Count Ramon Berenguer I based on the decisions of these assemblies.
The Catalan independence movement or the Catalan separatist movement (Catalan: independentisme català) is a political movement, derived from Catalan nationalism, which supports the independence of Catalonia or the Catalan countries from Spain and France. The Estelada flag, in its blue and red versions, has become its main symbol.

Puigdemont was born in Amer (Province of Girona) on December 29, 1962, and he currently lives in Girona with his wife and two children. He started studying for a degree in Catalan philology at the University College of Girona, but never graduated. His professional profile is that of a journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of El Punt, the director of Agència Catalana de Notícies, and the director of the newspaper Catalonia Today, which offers news about Catalonia in English. He is a member of the Catalan journalists' association, and has published several books, such as Cata… què? Catalunya vista per la premsa internacional [Catalonia as seen by the foreign press] (1994) and several essays about communication and new technologies.

Huge crowds have been celebrating on the streets of Barcelona, as the Catalan parliament voted to establish an "independent and sovereign state" - a declaration met with an immediate response from Spain: direct rule. And as for Europe, a big no too, as the head of the EU parliament declared no-one in the bloc would recognise Catalan independence. Protests broke out in the Spanish city of Barcelona Tuesday after Catalonia’s parliament postponed a vote on who should be president of the region. Pro-independence parties, which form a majority in the parliament, had nominated only one candidate - the exiled former leader Carles Puigdemont. The stand-off between Barcelona and Madrid looks set to deepen as parties on all sides of the debate harden their positions, as Henry Ridgwell reports. Sacked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has called for "democratic opposition" to direct rule from Madrid by Spain's government. He condemned the suspension of Catalonia's autonomy and promised to continue to "work to build a free country". He made the call in a TV address broadcast from an undisclosed location. The Spanish government has stripped Catalonia of its autonomy and taken charge of its government. The measures came early on Saturday after the Catalan parliament voted to declare independence the previous day. Earlier, Spain's interior ministry took charge of Catalonia's police after firing senior Catalan police officials. Spain says it is going to take away Catalonia's autonomy as region's leader ignores a deadline to abandon secession plans. A special cabinet meeting is due on Saturday to trigger Article 155 of the Spanish constitution. It allows government leaders in Madrid to take "all measures necessary" to prevent an autonomous region from breaking the law. Article 155 has never been applied before so its consequences are not clear. The options include removing the Catalan leadership, taking control of the police force and calling a snap regional election. Catalonia's President has threatened to declare independence in the regional parliament, if government leaders in Madrid don't hold talks. Carles Puidgemont claims widespread support - 90 percent in last month's referendum voted to secede. ...
