On this day in 1944, six working class teenagers were hanged in the street in Cologne by the Gestapo. The youths were members of the underground group the Edelw...eiss Pirates, which was an anti-authoritarian alternative to the Hitler Youth. There were around 3000 Pirates in Cologne, who shirked at work, fought running battles with young Nazis and carry out acts of sabotage against the military, including assassinating the city's head of the Gestapo. This is Lepa Svetozara Radić (1925–1943) in January 1943. Lepa was a partisan executed at the age of 17 in Bosanska Krupa in Bosnia for shooting at German soldi...ers. As her captors tied the noose around her neck, they offered her a way out of the gallows by revealing her comrades' and leaders' identities. She responded that she was not a traitor to her people and that they would reveal themselves when they avenged her death. She was the youngest winner of the Order of the People's Hero of Yugoslavia, awarded in 1951.
