Some news: We have a date for our newsroom union election! See you at the polls on Thursday, Jan. 4. 🦅🗳

  2. And now, like magic, Tronc has added a bunch of the excluded names to the voter list. Not perfect, but progress. Public shaming and collective action can work, fam, even to just make your NLRB election more inclusive.

  3. You can find the post on this here: As journalists get stiffed on raises, Tronc's chairman bags another $5 million for private jet and "expertise"

  4. The publisher recently told us “there are always tradeoffs where we invest, where we don’t, and how much.” The fact that Tronc prioritizes this kind of lavish executive pay over newsroom raises just builds the case for .

In an anti-union email to the LA Times staff this week, our publisher wrote "There are always tradeoffs where we invest, where we don’t, and how much." I agree and the choice Tronc has made is not to invest in its journalists but things like this:

As Tronc’s biggest shareholder gets $5 million per year in cash "to provide certain management expertise,” some of our journalists are earning less than $40,000 a year to live and work in Los Angeles.

Unbelievable. Tronc's biggest shareholder is getting $5 million/year in cash "to provide certain management expertise" while the company wages an anti-union campaign and says there's not enough money for newsroom-wide wages.

A raise for the hardworking journalists whose work pays for massive bonuses for Tronc executives? Now that’s something we can support.

We did that math: That is a $12,000 raise for the entire editorial staff. Er, was a raise.

See? Journalism can be profitable, just not for journalists.

  12. I wonder if he will think about the reporters in our newsroom living on less than $40,000 a year while he spends that $5 million. Read more here:

  16. I’m so angry right now. We have so many journalists who desperately need raises.

  17. Latest anti-union jollygram from management, trying to sow discord, then claiming they’re not trying to divide the newsroom.

  18. We go high, Tronc goes low. invites EVERYONE to vote Jan. 4

  20. This is why unions want card check agreements and not NLRB elections. The overwhelming majority of the newsroom already decided it wanted a union, but now we have to sit through the company playing games with people’s ability to vote.

  21. If Tronc keeps interfering with its workers’ right to unionize, I will cancel my subscription. RT if you will, too.
